PECCATA Lower Quarter-Turn Staircase – Laminated Oak, 280 cm, 14 Treads

The PECCATA is a lower quarter-turn staircase in laminated oak, supplied as a kit for on-site assembly. Its lower quarter-turn configuration places the 90° change of direction at the bottom of the flight, making it suitable for corner stairwell openings and freeing up space beneath the first flight for possible storage. Designed for a floor-to-floor height of 280 cm with 14 treads, it is 80 cm wide and has a recommended stairwell opening of 85x282 cm.

The rise is 20 cm and the going is 19 cm – the dimensions of the Standard range. The treads measure 230x30 mm, wider than standard models and providing a generous tread surface. The laminated oak is supplied unfinished: a protective finish must be applied before first use. Available in right- or left-hand versions to suit the room layout.

Key points

  • ✓ Lower quarter-turn: turn at the bottom of the staircase – space beneath can be used for storage
  • ✓ 230x30 mm dimensions: wider treads than the standard range – generous tread surface and minimal flex
  • ✓ Laminated oak: dense (700 kg/m³), stable and wear-resistant – higher quality than fir
  • ✓ Pre-drilling required: oak is a hardwood – driving screws without pilot holes risks splitting it
  • ✓ Choice of direction: right or left – specify when ordering; cannot be changed after delivery
  • ✓ Finish required: unfinished oak marks easily – apply staircase varnish before use

Installation advice

Preparation: check the floor-to-floor height (280 cm maximum) and stairwell opening (85x282 cm minimum) before unpacking the kit. Measure between finished floor and ceiling surfaces, including coverings. Decide which way the quarter-turn should go before ordering – this choice cannot be changed afterwards.

Fixings: always drill pilot holes before driving screws into oak. Oak is a hardwood that can split if screws are driven in without pilot holes. Use HSS drill bits with a smaller diameter than the screws.

Handrail: the handrail can be added after the staircase has been assembled – it is reversible (right or left). Fixings are supplied.

Finishing: apply 2 to 3 coats of staircase varnish before first use. Hidden surfaces (the undersides of the treads) can be treated before assembly.

Care and protection

Unfinished oak must be protected before first use. Without protection, marks become embedded in its open grain. Recommended options:

  • ✓ Water-based polyurethane staircase varnish: 2–3 coats for maximum resistance (renew every 5–7 years)
  • ✓ Oak hardwax oil: a natural look that brings out the grain; renew annually
  • ✓ Polyurethane varnish: gloss and impact resistance

For routine cleaning, use a slightly damp cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner. Check that the fixings are tight once a year.

WoodUp advice

The oak PECCATA stands out for its 230x30 mm tread dimensions – wider than standard oak models (210x30 mm). The extra 20 mm of width provides a more comfortable surface for your feet, particularly for larger shoe sizes, and reduces the noticeable overhang at the edge of the tread.

Before you buy: decide whether the quarter-turn should go right or left before ordering. To choose, stand at the foot of the staircase facing up the stairs – the direction of the turn at the bottom is the direction in which the first flight turns. If in doubt, sketch the position of the stairwell opening and contact WoodUp customer service.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the PECCATA and the MOLEDE lower quarter-turn staircase?

The PECCATA is made of laminated oak, with 230x30 mm tread dimensions and 14 treads for a height of 280 cm. The MOLEDE is made of laminated beech, with 210x30 mm tread dimensions and likewise has 14 treads for a height of 280 cm. The PECCATA offers a wider tread (+20 mm) and a harder wood species. The MOLEDE costs slightly less and has a standard-width tread. The space required and stairwell opening are identical (282 cm / 85x282 cm).

How do I choose the right- or left-hand PECCATA?

Stand at the foot of the staircase, facing up the stairs. If the turn at the bottom goes to your right, choose "right-hand lower quarter-turn". If it goes to your left, choose "left-hand lower quarter-turn". This choice cannot be changed once you have ordered. If in doubt, draw a plan of your room showing the stairwell opening and send it to WoodUp customer service for confirmation.

Can the PECCATA be cut down for a height of 260 cm?

Yes. The stringers are cut from the bottom, following the cutting chart supplied in the instructions. For 260 cm, approximately 20 cm must be cut off, slightly changing the height of the first step. Check the floor-to-floor height between finished surfaces before cutting.

Why choose oak rather than beech for a quarter-turn staircase?

Oak (700 kg/m³) is slightly denser and more wear-resistant than beech (680 kg/m³). In appearance, oak has a more pronounced grain and a naturally warm colour (golden to brown), while beech has a more even grain and a pale colour. Oak is recommended if the staircase will see heavy traffic or if you want a wood that develops a natural patina over time. Beech is perfectly suitable for normal family use.

How long will this oak staircase last?

A properly protected and maintained laminated oak staircase has a service life of 30 to 50 years under normal indoor use. The staircase varnish should be renewed every 5–7 years, depending on foot traffic. The treads can be sanded and refinished several times over their lifetime, depending on their remaining thickness (30 mm initially).

Can storage be fitted under the PECCATA lower quarter-turn staircase?

Yes. The lower quarter-turn configuration frees up a triangular space beneath the first flight. With a footprint of 282 cm by 80 cm, this space can accommodate a cupboard or shelves. The available height depends on the height of the first step and the staircase pitch – plan the storage before installation so you can allow for cladding and wall fixings.
