Straight staircase in glulam beech – 13-step kit with handrail
This straight staircase in glulam beech (Fagus sylvatica) is designed for indoor installations requiring primary or secondary access to an upper floor. Its passage width of 80 cm and maximum floor-to-floor height of 280 cm correspond to the most common configurations in detached houses, both for renovation and new construction.
The staircase is supplied as a pre-machined kit comprising the stringers, treads, risers and a spindle handrail with handrail rail. The mortise and tenon joints are machined in the workshop to facilitate on-site assembly. The structure can be trimmed from the bottom to precisely adjust to the actual floor-to-floor height.
Glulam beech offers good dimensional stability thanks to the alternating orientation of the laminations during bonding. This process limits deformation caused by moisture variations compared to solid wood of an equivalent cross-section. Supplied unfinished, the wood requires the application of a protective finish before use (staircase varnish, oil or lacquer).
The staircase has 13 steps and 14 risers, the last riser corresponding to the level of the landing. The passage width of 80 cm is fixed and cannot be trimmed, as the treads are fitted into the stringers using mortise and tenon joints.

Key features
- Glulam beech. Stable and dense material (~720 kg/m³), suitable for residential staircases.
- Complete kit. Stringers, treads, risers and spindle handrail included.
- Easy assembly. Mortise and tenon joints machined in the workshop.
- Reversible handrail. Can be installed on the right or left depending on the configuration.
- Height adjustment. Trimming from the bottom is possible for floor-to-floor heights of less than 280 cm.
- Fixed width. The treads cannot be trimmed in width.
Installation tips
- Prior measurements. Check the finished floor-to-finished floor height and the stairwell width before installation.
- Subfloor preparation. The lower support must be flat and sufficiently strong to bear the load of the staircase.
- Assembly. Fit the stringers with the treads and risers following the plan provided. Joints are made using mortise and tenon connections.
- Positioning. Place the staircase and fit the handrail on the desired side.
- Fixing. Secure the bottom stringer firmly to the floor and the upper section into the floor structure or against a load-bearing wall.
- Possible trimming. If the floor-to-floor height is less than 280 cm, adjust the height by trimming the bottom of the staircase.
Maintenance and protection
Glulam beech is supplied unfinished and must be protected before use. A suitable finish limits wear marks and stabilises the wood surface.
- Polyurethane staircase varnish: high protection against wear and scratches.
- Oil or oil-wax: natural finish allowing localised touch-ups.
- Polyurethane lacquer: durable film-forming finish for intensive use.
Clean regularly with a slightly damp cloth and a pH-neutral product. Avoid excess water and maintain indoor humidity between 45% and 65%.
Frequently asked questions
How do I install this straight staircase kit?
Installation involves assembling the stringers, treads and risers using mortise and tenon joints, then positioning the handrail and securing the whole unit to the floor and ceiling. Two people are recommended for installation.
Can the staircase be trimmed in height?
Yes. The structure can be adjusted by trimming the bottom of the staircase to suit a floor-to-floor height of less than 280 cm.
Why 13 steps for a floor-to-floor height of 280 cm?
The staircase has 13 steps but 14 risers. The last riser corresponds to the level of the landing.
Can the width of the staircase be reduced?
No. The treads are fitted into the stringers using mortise and tenon joints. Any width trimming would remove these joints and compromise the structural stability.
What finish should be applied to a beech staircase?
A polyurethane staircase varnish applied in two or three coats provides the most durable protection. A hard oil can also be used for a more natural finish.
