CHOLLIARD Straight Staircase - Glued Laminated Beech, 280 cm, 214 cm Footprint

The CHOLLIARD straight staircase in glued laminated beech is one of the most compact straight staircases in the WoodUp range for a floor-to-floor height of 280 cm. With a footprint of only 214 cm and 13 steps, it is suited to configurations where floor space is very limited. The width is 80 cm, the step section is 190x30 mm, the tread depth is 16 cm, and the step height is 20 cm.

The 16 cm tread depth is shorter than the Standard range (19 cm): the slope is steeper and climbing comfort is lower than a standard staircase. To be verified according to the users. The glued laminated beech is delivered raw and must receive a finish before use. Delivered in 2 parcels. The recommended stairwell is 85x214 cm.

Key points

  • 214 cm footprint: the most compact straight beech staircase in the WoodUp range for a 280 cm height
  • Glued laminated beech: stable, wear-resistant, varnished finish recommended
  • 16 cm tread depth: compact and steep staircase — to be assessed according to regular users
  • 190x30 mm section: thick step (30 mm), good rigidity
  • Handrail addable afterwards: reversible left or right, fixings included
  • 2 parcels: easier handling

Installation advice

Check the floor-to-floor height and the stairwell (85x214 cm minimum) before unpacking. The 16 cm tread depth implies a steeper slope than average — take into account the regular users when making your choice. Assemble stringers and steps according to the instruction manual. Pre-drill before screwing into the beech. Fix to the floor and to the upper support. The handrail can be added after installation, reversible left or right.

Maintenance and protection

Apply a stair varnish 2–3 coats before first use (renew every 5–7 years). Raw beech absorbs dirt quickly without protection. Cleaning: damp cloth, neutral pH.

WoodUp advice

The CHOLLIARD is the right choice when footprint is the main constraint and the available space does not exceed 215 cm. At only 214 cm, it allows a straight beech staircase to be installed in a space equivalent to a standard loft staircase. The trade-off is a 16 cm tread depth — at the limit of comfortable for intensive daily use. For use as a main staircase by children or elderly users, the CHEVALARD (19 cm tread depth, 259 cm footprint) is more suitable.

Before purchasing: the stairwell of 85x214 cm is a minimum dimension — allow a few extra centimetres for installation clearance (217 cm in length is recommended). The handrail is optional and can be fitted after the staircase has been installed.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the CHOLLIARD have a tread depth of only 16 cm?

The reduced tread depth is a direct consequence of the small footprint (214 cm for 13 steps). The formula is simple: footprint = number of steps × tread depth. For 13 steps and a footprint of 214 cm, the tread depth is 214/13 = 16.5 cm (rounded to 16 cm). This is the inevitable compromise between compactness and climbing comfort.

What is the difference between the CHOLLIARD and the SUCHET in fir?

The CHOLLIARD is in glued laminated beech (denser, more durable) with a tread depth of 16 cm and a footprint of 214 cm. The SUCHET is in fir (more economical) with a tread depth of 16.8 cm and a footprint of 229 cm. The CHOLLIARD is more compact and more durable; the SUCHET offers a slightly more comfortable tread depth.

Is a 16 cm tread depth compliant for private use?

In private use (individual house), French regulations do not set a minimum mandatory tread depth. Comfort recommendations (standard NF P01-012) indicate a tread depth of 22 cm for a public staircase, but in private use shorter tread depths are common, particularly for compact staircases. The key consideration is that the staircase is safe and suitable for its users.

Can the CHOLLIARD be cut down?

Yes. If your floor-to-floor height is less than 280 cm, the stringers can be cut according to the cutting chart in the instruction manual. Cutting modifies the height of the first step. For a height of 260 cm, the cut is approximately 20 cm.

Which handrail is compatible with the CHOLLIARD?

WoodUp handrails compatible with an 80 cm straight staircase are available in the accessories section. The handrail can be installed after the staircase has been fitted and is reversible left or right. Fixings are included. Browse the handrail options available on the website or contact customer service to confirm compatibility.

What is the lifespan of the CHOLLIARD in beech?

A glued laminated beech staircase that is properly protected and maintained has a service life of 25 to 40 years under normal interior use. The varnish should be renewed every 5–7 years depending on traffic. Glued laminated wood resists hygroscopic variations better than solid wood — a real advantage for a staircase subject to seasonal changes.
