GAVIA Straight Staircase – Comfort Range, 288 cm, 18 cm Rise, 22 cm Going
The GAVIA straight staircase belongs to WoodUp’s Comfort range, with an 18 cm rise and a 22 cm going, calculated using Blondel’s formula for comfortable use (2x18 + 22 = 58, just below the stated ideal range of 59 to 64). Available in glued-laminated beech, oak or fir, it offers a gentler climb than the Standard range (20 cm rise / 19 cm going), particularly welcome for intensive daily use or older users.
Designed for a floor-to-floor height of 288 cm with 15 steps, it requires 336 cm of floor space and a 336x82 cm stairwell opening. The treads have a cross-section of 210x30 mm. The Comfort range requires more space: 336 cm versus 259–273 cm for Standard straight staircases. Check this against the space available.

Key points
- ✓ Comfort range: 18 cm rise / 22 cm going – Blondel’s formula for a comfortable climb
- ✓ Three wood species: fir (economical), glued-laminated beech or oak (durability)
- ✓ Deeper step: 22 cm going versus 19 cm in the Standard range – room for your whole foot on the step
- ✓ Requires 336 cm of floor space: more than the Standard range – check the space available
- ✓ Handrail can be added later: fits on the right or left; screws supplied
- ✓ Pre-drilling required: for beech and oak, dense woods prone to splitting
Installation advice
Check the available floor space (336 cm minimum) and stairwell opening (336x82 cm recommended) before ordering. The 336 cm required is considerably more than for Standard staircases: make sure the room has 336 cm of clear space in a straight line in the direction of ascent.
Assemble according to the instructions, pre-drilling beech and oak. Secure the staircase to the floor and upper support. Two people are recommended. Apply the finish after installation is complete. The handrail can be added after assembly, on either the right or left.
Care and protection
Apply a finish suited to the chosen wood species before first use. For fir: two coats of stair varnish or hardwax oil. For beech and oak: two to three coats of stair varnish recommended for maximum wear resistance. Reapply every 5–7 years. Clean with a damp cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner.
WoodUp advice
The GAVIA straight staircase from the Comfort range is the choice when ease of climbing matters more than compactness. Its 22 cm going lets you place your whole foot on each step without it overhanging the front edge – a noticeable difference in daily use, particularly for older people, children and when carrying objects. The trade-off is a floor-space requirement of 336 cm: make sure you have enough room.
Before you buy: for the same height, the Comfort range requires 77 cm more floor space than a Standard CHEVALARD (336 versus 259 cm). If you have more than 336 cm of space, the GAVIA is the most comfortable choice. If you have less, the Comfort quarter-turn models (SELA, FURKA, BAVAT) provide a 22 cm going while taking up less space.
Frequently asked questions
What is Blondel’s formula, and why does it matter?
Blondel’s formula (2H + G = 59 to 64 cm) defines the relationship between step rise (H) and going (G) for a comfortable staircase. For the GAVIA: 2x18 + 22 = 58 cm, slightly below the stated range but considered suitable. A 22 cm going with an 18 cm rise gives a natural stride similar to walking on level ground – an ergonomic combination for an indoor staircase.
What is the difference between the Standard and Comfort ranges?
The Standard range (CHEVALARD, FONTBRUNO) has a 20 cm rise and a 19 cm going: it takes up less space while offering acceptable comfort. The Comfort range (GAVIA, FURKA, SELA, BAVAT Comfort) has an 18 cm rise and a 22 cm going: a gentler climb with room to place your foot securely, but it requires 50–80 cm more space. The choice depends on the space available and how much you value comfort.
Can the GAVIA be cut to fit a height of 270 cm?
Yes. For a floor-to-floor height of 270 cm, approximately 18 cm can be cut from the stringers, leaving the step rise unchanged (18 cm x 15 = exactly 270 cm). The GAVIA is designed for 288 cm; at 270 cm, it also works without cutting if one step is removed, or with slight trimming if all 15 steps are retained. Consult the chart in the instructions for the exact calculation.
Is the GAVIA available with a built-in handrail?
The GAVIA is sold without a handrail. Order the handrail separately from WoodUp’s accessories. It can be fitted after the staircase has been assembled, on either the right or left. See the accessories section for handrails compatible with an 80 cm straight staircase from the Comfort range.
Which wood should I choose for the GAVIA – fir, beech or oak?
Fir is the economical option, suited to moderate use and suitable for painting or stair varnish. Glued-laminated beech is the balanced choice, offering greater strength, an even grain and a light colour. Glued-laminated oak is the premium choice, with a pronounced grain, a warm colour and maximum durability. Beech or oak is recommended for a heavily used main staircase. Fir is suitable for normal family use.
Why choose the straight GAVIA rather than a quarter-turn staircase from the Comfort range?
A straight staircase is the simplest to install and the easiest to make safer with a handrail. It is suitable if 336 cm of straight-line space is available and the stairwell opening is aligned on the same axis. Comfort quarter-turn staircases (SELA, FURKA) are preferable when the opening requires a change of direction or there is not enough room for a 336 cm straight staircase.
