NUGERE space-saving staircase - alternating-tread kit, 280 cm, fir or beech
The NUGERE is a space-saving alternating-tread staircase, supplied as a kit for assembly on site. An alternating-tread staircase has staggered treads: you climb by placing your right and left feet alternately on the corresponding half-treads. This reduces the floor space needed while retaining enough support for each foot. The design fits into smaller spaces - mezzanines and lofts - where a standard straight staircase could not be installed.
The NUGERE model is designed for a 280 cm floor-to-floor height and has 13 treads. Its width without the handrail is 65 cm, and its overall width with the handrail is 68 cm. The recommended stairwell opening is 73 cm wide and 155 cm long for fir or 170 cm long for beech (measurements with handrail). Available in fir or glued laminated beech, with different tread sections depending on the wood chosen.

Installation advice
Check the dimensions: check the floor-to-floor height (280 cm) and recommended stairwell opening (73 cm wide, 155 cm long for fir or 170 cm for beech with a handrail) before unpacking the kit.
Positioning: check the floor space required (151 cm for fir / 165 cm for beech) and the space to the side if a handrail is planned. An alternating-tread staircase requires you to climb by alternating your right and left feet - make sure users are comfortable with this before ordering.
Assembly: assemble the staircase according to the instructions, then check its alignment, level and verticality. Anchor it to the floor and supporting structure using fixings suited to the material (concrete, wood, etc.).
Finish: after installation is complete, apply a finish suitable for indoor use (oil, varnish or paint, depending on the desired look and use).
Care and protection
Apply a protective finish before first use - staircase floor varnish (2–3 coats) or hardwax oil for a natural look. Because the usable half of each alternating tread bears more wear, a hard-wearing floor varnish is preferable to oil alone for frequent use. Clean with a slightly damp soft cloth; avoid abrasive products.
WoodUp tip
An alternating-tread staircase is not suitable for every use. It works well as secondary access to a mezzanine or converted loft, used by adults who understand how it works. For heavy daily use, young children or people with reduced mobility, a straight or quarter-turn staircase is safer. Each half-tread provides an effective depth of around 20 cm per foot - enough for comfortable climbing, but less than a standard staircase.
Before you buy: the beech version is delivered in 2 packages (the stringer package is 330 cm long) - check that access to your installation site allows you to carry components of this length.
Frequently asked questions
How do you climb an alternating-tread staircase?
Climb by alternating your feet consistently: right foot on the right half-tread, left foot on the left half-tread. Most people get used to the rhythm after a few uses. The same principle applies when descending. Placing both feet on the same tread is not recommended, as it can cause you to lose your balance.
What is the minimum stairwell opening for installing the NUGERE?
The recommended minimum stairwell opening is 73 cm wide and 155 cm long (fir) or 170 cm long (beech) with a handrail. Without a handrail, the minimum width drops to 68 cm. Check these dimensions at the finished ceiling, including coverings and trim.
Which should I choose: the NUGERE or an AULAC paddle staircase?
The alternating-tread NUGERE takes up even less floor space (151 cm versus 222 cm for the AULAC), but requires you to alternate your feet when climbing - making it suitable for agile adults. The AULAC has conventional straight treads and a pitch adjustable by pivots - making it more versatile and comfortable for mixed use.
Is the NUGERE suitable for a mezzanine with a floor-to-floor height of 260 cm?
Yes. The staircase can be cut to size - consult the cutting chart in the documents attached to the product listing. For a height of 260 cm, approximately 20 cm must be cut from the stringers. The step height will change slightly as a result.
Fir or beech for the NUGERE - which wood should I choose?
Fir is lighter (just 1 package), less expensive and suitable for moderate use. Glued laminated beech is more wear-resistant (with denser treads), more dimensionally stable and recommended for heavy daily use or if you want a high-quality floor-varnished finish. Beech also has a slightly thicker tread section (30 mm versus 28 mm).
Why choose the NUGERE over a standard straight staircase?
Only if you do not have enough floor space for a straight staircase (at least 273 cm for a 15-step MORENO). The NUGERE needs 151 cm of floor length, making it suitable for mezzanines and lofts with a restricted stairwell opening. If space allows, a straight staircase remains more comfortable for everyday use.
