NUGERE Space-Saving Staircase - Alternating Treads Kit, 280 cm, Fir or Beech

The NUGERE staircase is a space-saving alternating-tread staircase, delivered as a kit, with components to be assembled on site. An alternating-tread staircase consists of offset treads: you climb by placing alternately your right foot and your left foot on each half-tread, which reduces the floor footprint while maintaining sufficient stepping depth for each foot. This design allows installation in compact spaces — mezzanines, lofts — where a standard straight staircase could not be fitted.

The NUGERE model is designed for a floor-to-floor height of 280 cm with 13 treads. The width without handrail is 65 cm and the total width with handrail is 68 cm. The recommended opening is 73 cm wide, for a length of 155 cm in fir or 170 cm in beech (values given with handrail). Available in fir or glued laminated beech, with different tread sections depending on the chosen species.

Key features

  • Maximum space saving: footprint of only 151 cm (fir) / 165 cm (beech) — approximately half that of a standard straight staircase
  • Two wood species: fir or glued laminated beech, with different tread sections depending on the species
  • Kit assembly: on-site assembly, anchored to the floor and to the support structure
  • Cuttable: possible according to the instructions and configuration
  • Compact opening: only 73 cm wide — compatible with standard mezzanine openings
  • Indoor use only: mezzanine, loft, secondary technical access

Installation advice

Side checks: verify the floor-to-floor height (280 cm) and the recommended opening (width 73 cm, length 155 cm in fir or 170 cm in beech with handrail) before unpacking the kit.

Installation: check the floor footprint (151 cm fir / 165 cm beech) and the lateral space if a handrail is planned. The alternating-tread staircase requires you to climb by alternating right and left feet — make sure all users are comfortable with this type of ascent before ordering.

Assembly: assemble the staircase in accordance with the instructions, then check alignment, level, and plumb. Anchor to the floor and to the support structure with fixings suitable for the material (concrete, wood, etc.).

Finish: apply a finish suitable for interior use (oil, varnish or paint depending on desired result and use) after complete installation.

Maintenance and protection

Apply a protective finish before first use — staircase varnish (2–3 coats) or oil-wax for a natural look. As alternating treads are subjected to more concentrated wear on their usable half, a hard-wearing varnish is preferable to a simple oil for frequent use. Cleaning: soft slightly damp cloth, avoid abrasive products.

WoodUp Advice

The alternating-tread staircase is not suitable for all uses. It is perfectly suited as secondary access to a mezzanine or converted loft, used by adults who are aware of its particular characteristics. For intensive daily use, young children, or people with reduced mobility, a straight or quarter-turn staircase is safer. The effective depth of each half-tread is approximately 20 cm per foot — sufficient for comfortable climbing but less than a standard staircase.

Good to know before purchasing: the beech version is delivered in 2 parcels (330 cm long for the stringer parcel) — please ensure that access to your site allows handling of components of this length.

Frequently asked questions

How do you climb an alternating-tread staircase?

You climb by consistently alternating feet: right foot on the right half-tread, left foot on the left half-tread. The rhythm is quickly acquired after a few uses. The same principle applies when descending. It is not recommended to place both feet on the same tread — this creates an imbalance.

What is the minimum opening for installing the NUGERE?

The minimum recommended opening is 73 cm wide for a length of 155 cm (fir) or 170 cm (beech) with handrail. Without a handrail, the minimum width drops to 68 cm. These dimensions must be checked on the finished ceiling, including all cladding and finishes.

Which staircase to choose between the NUGERE and an AULAC loft staircase?

The NUGERE alternating-tread staircase offers an even smaller footprint (151 cm compared to 222 cm for the AULAC) but requires climbing by alternating feet — suited to agile adults. The AULAC has classic straight treads and an adjustable slope via pivots — more versatile and comfortable for mixed use.

Is the NUGERE compatible with a mezzanine with a 260 cm ceiling height?

Yes. The staircase is cuttable — refer to the cutting chart provided in the attached documents on the product page. For a height of 260 cm, the cut is approximately 20 cm on the stringers. The tread height will be slightly modified accordingly.

Fir or beech for the NUGERE — which species to choose?

Fir is lighter (single parcel), less expensive, and suitable for moderate use. Glued laminated beech is more resistant to wear (denser treads), more dimensionally stable, and recommended for intensive daily use or if you want a quality varnished finish. Beech also offers a slightly thicker tread section (30 mm vs 28 mm).

Why choose the NUGERE over a standard straight staircase?

Only if your floor space does not allow for the footprint of a straight staircase (minimum 273 cm for a MORENO with 15 treads). The NUGERE fits within 151 cm in length, making it compatible with mezzanines and lofts where the opening is restricted. If space allows, a straight staircase remains more comfortable for everyday use.
