BASSEYRE Mill Staircase - Solid Fir, 287 cm, 222 cm Footprint
The straight BASSEYRE staircase in natural solid fir is designed for interior spaces requiring simple, straight access with a small footprint. It is particularly suited to configurations where floor space is limited, while maintaining a significant floor-to-floor height of up to 287 cm. The BASSEYRE staircase occupies 222 cm of floor space, which corresponds to a fairly steep pitch — allow for comfortable but steeper access than a standard staircase.
Available in 65 cm width (or 80 cm depending on the version), with or without handrail. The tread section is 145x28 mm — a compact section typical of mill staircases, slimmer than a traditional staircase. Supplied as a kit with 13 treads. Indoor use only — untreated fir, to be finished after installation.

Installation advice
Check the floor-to-floor height (287 cm maximum) and available footprint (222 cm minimum) before unpacking the kit. The BASSEYRE staircase has a steeper pitch than a standard staircase — allow sufficient space at the bottom of the staircase to go up and down comfortably with arms full. Fix securely to the floor and the upper floor. Apply a protective finish before use.
Maintenance and protection
Apply an interior finish (oil, varnish or paint) after installation. Raw fir absorbs stains quickly without protection. For a utility staircase with low traffic, an oil-wax finish is sufficient. Clean dry or with a damp cloth.
WoodUp Advice
The BASSEYRE staircase is suitable for accessing loft spaces or a mezzanine with an unusual height (up to 287 cm). Its steep pitch (222 cm footprint for 287 cm of height) makes it harder to descend than to ascend — particularly when carrying a load. For everyday use, the AULAC model with adjustable pivots offers more flexibility on the pitch.
Important before purchasing: the stairwell opening varies depending on the version. 65 cm staircase without handrail: allow 65 cm in width. With handrail: 67 cm (65 cm) or 82 cm (80 cm). The stairwell opening length is 222 cm in all cases.
Frequently asked questions
Can the BASSEYRE staircase be cut down?
Yes. If your floor-to-floor height is less than 287 cm, the stringers can be cut down. Refer to the instructions and cutting chart supplied with the kit. For a height of 260 cm for example, the cut will be approximately 27 cm, which will slightly alter the step height.
Which width is most suitable — 65 cm or 80 cm?
A width of 65 cm is sufficient for occasional access to a mezzanine or loft. A width of 80 cm offers greater comfort for passing through and handling objects. If your stairwell opening allows it, the 80 cm version is recommended for more frequent use.
What is the difference between the BASSEYRE and the AULAC?
The BASSEYRE has fixed treads and a set footprint (222 cm for 287 cm) — straightforward to dimension. The AULAC has pivot-adjustable treads — more flexible when the height or the setback does not exactly match standard values. Both have the same tread section (145x28 mm) and the same number of treads (13).
Can the BASSEYRE be used in a sheltered outdoor setting?
No. Untreated fir is a class 1 timber species — it is not suitable for outdoor use, even under cover. For exterior access to a mezzanine or loft, the FANLO model in douglas fir or larch is designed for outdoor use.
Is the handrail included or optional?
The handrail is optional on the BASSEYRE — available with or without handrail depending on the version ordered. If you order with a handrail, check that the stairwell opening accounts for the total width including the handrail (add 2 cm to the overall width).
