AULAC Fir Loft Ladder Staircase
AULAC mill staircase in solid fir — pitch adjustable via metal pivots. 13 treads, width 65 or 70 cm (+ 4.5 cm with handrail). The metal pivots allow the inclination to be adjusted while keeping the treads horizontal regardless of the pitch. Adaptable height depending on configuration. Available with or without handrail. Fixings and instructions included. Recommended for mezzanines and loft spaces with compact stairwell openings. Raw untreated fir — finishing is required before installation. Indoor use only.
AULAC Mill Staircase - Solid Fir, Pivot-Adjustable Pitch, Kit
The AULAC mill staircase in solid fir is designed to create vertical access in a restricted space. Supplied as a kit, it is installed between a lower level and a mezzanine or intermediate floor, with precise adaptation to the floor-to-floor height. Its metal pivot system integrated into the stringers allows the pitch to be adjusted without altering the angle of the treads — the treads remain horizontal regardless of the chosen inclination. Available in 65 cm or 70 cm width, with or without handrail.
Unlike a standard straight staircase, the AULAC adapts to a wide range of configurations: variable floor-to-floor height, limited setback, compact stairwell opening. The tread section is 145x28 mm. The floor footprint and required stairwell opening depend on the pitch set at installation — calculate overall width + 2 cm for the stairwell opening width, and the footprint resulting from the pitch for the length.

Installation advice
Pitch adjustment is carried out via the metal pivots integrated into the stringers, following the detailed procedure in the instructions provided. The greater the available setback, the gentler the pitch and the more comfortable the climb. With a reduced setback, the pitch will be steeper — assembly remains technically possible but climbing becomes less comfortable when carrying a load.
Fix the staircase to the floor and the upper floor with fixings appropriate to the material. Check the plumb and level after adjusting the pitch, before final fixing. If a handrail is planned, fit it during assembly.
Maintenance and protection
Apply a finish suited to the intended use (oil, interior varnish or paint) after complete installation. For a mill staircase used as secondary access with low traffic, an oil-wax finish is sufficient. For everyday use, a 2-coat floor lacquer is recommended. Routine cleaning dry or with a slightly damp cloth.
WoodUp Advice
The AULAC mill staircase is primarily a functional access solution — it is not designed to replace a main staircase. Its steeper pitch compared to a standard staircase makes it less comfortable for frequent use, particularly when descending with loads. For intensive daily use by the whole family, the FAGEOLE (thicker section, more stable adjustment) or a compact quarter-turn staircase are more suitable.
Important before purchasing: the step height and going are not fixed — they result from the pitch adjustment on site. The greater the floor-to-floor height and the more limited the setback, the greater the step height will be. These values cannot be given in advance without knowing the exact configuration of your project.
Frequently asked questions
How does the metal pivot pitch adjustment work?
The stringers of the AULAC incorporate metal pivots on which the treads are mounted. These pivots allow the stringers to rotate relative to the treads: by tilting the stringers, the pitch of the staircase is changed without the treads following this movement — they remain horizontal. The adjustment is made by setting the angle of the stringers according to the height to be reached and the available setback, then locking the pivots in position.
What floor-to-floor height can the AULAC cover?
The AULAC covers a wide range of floor-to-floor heights thanks to its adjustment system. It can be cut down at the top or bottom. For heights below 220 cm, cutting down the stringers is necessary. For heights above 290 cm, contact WoodUp customer service to check feasibility according to the configuration.
What is the difference between the AULAC and the BASSEYRE?
The AULAC is a mill staircase with a pivot-adjustable pitch — the step height and going adapt to your configuration. The BASSEYRE is a straight staircase with fixed treads (step height 20.5 cm, section 145x28 mm) with a set footprint of 222 cm for 287 cm of height — less flexible but simpler to dimension.
Is the AULAC suitable for a loft with a 2.20 m ceiling?
Yes. With a floor-to-floor height of 220 cm, the AULAC can be cut down and adjusted for this configuration. Check that the available setback is sufficient to achieve an acceptable pitch. For a height of 220 cm, a minimum setback of 120 cm is recommended for comfortable climbing.
Can the AULAC be installed without a handrail and have one added later?
A handrail can be added after assembly to this mill staircase. On quarter-turn staircases (NERONNE, BAVAT), the handrail is not reversible and its direction is linked to the direction ordered — consult the product sheet for the relevant model for specific constraints. Do check the compatibility of the chosen handrail with the version and width of the AULAC ordered before purchasing.
Which space-saving staircase to choose: AULAC, NUGERE or BASSEYRE?
The AULAC (adjustable pivots) is the most flexible — suited when the height or setback is constrained. The NUGERE (alternating treads) offers the smallest footprint (151 cm) but requires climbing by alternating feet. The BASSEYRE is the simplest to dimension with fixed characteristics — suited when the height and setback correspond exactly to its standard dimensions.
Our complementary staircases
BASSEYRE — Straight fir mill staircase 287 cm, fixed dimensions
FAGEOLE — Adjustable mill staircase, thicker section
NUGERE — Alternating-tread staircase, minimal footprint 151 cm
