Fix the vertical boards to the string at regular intervals. Check the plumb before tightening. Fix the rails horizontally. Spacing between rails less than 11 cm, height 90 cm minimum from the nosing of the step. Apply the finish before final fixing.

The wood is delivered untreated. Apply a protective finish before use: 2-coat satin varnish (maximum durability), oil-wax (natural appearance, renewal every 1–2 years) or paint. The handrail, subject to frequent contact, benefits from an abrasion-resistant varnish.
