Installation advice
Exterior treatment is essential before installation - apply 2 to 3 coats of exterior wood stain or saturator on all faces, including edges and ends. The minimum regulatory height for an exterior handrail is 90 cm (vertical measurement from the nosing).
Use stainless steel or galvanised fixings to avoid rust marks on the wood. Check the spacing between the spindles: less than 11 cm (standard NF P01-012). Two people recommended for installation.
Maintenance and protection
The glulam wood is supplied raw without treatment. Apply 2 to 3 coats of exterior wood stain, oil or saturator on all faces (including edges) before installation or upon receipt. Without treatment, wood deteriorates rapidly outdoors when exposed to the elements.
Renew the protection every 2 to 3 years depending on exposure (south-facing sides and very rainy areas require more frequent maintenance). Inspect fixings annually and tighten if necessary. A scrub brush clean with soapy water (neutral pH) at the start of each season is sufficient for routine maintenance.
Frequently asked questions
Which wood species is recommended for an exterior handrail exposed to the elements?
For outdoor exposure, oak is the most naturally resistant species (use class 2-3), followed by treated beech. Fir is less naturally resistant but suitable with thorough and regular treatment. If your staircase is highly exposed (direct rain, coastal location), opt for oak and renew the treatment every 2 years.
What treatment should be used for an exterior wooden handrail?
For an exterior handrail, use a high-quality exterior wood stain or wood saturator with UV and fungicidal protection. Apply 2 to 3 coats on clean, dry wood (no rain forecast for 24 hours). Renew every 2-3 years depending on exposure. Avoid film-forming paints which can flake and trap moisture in the wood.
Are the included fixings suitable for outdoor use?
For outdoor use, fixings must be stainless steel or galvanised to resist corrosion. Check the contents of the kit upon receipt - if the fixings supplied are not stainless steel or galvanised, replace them with outdoor-suitable equivalents to avoid rust marks on the wood.
Is the ALBULA exterior handrail compatible with staircases other than the ALBULA?
The handrail is sized for the ALBULA WoodUp staircase. Adaptation to other staircases of similar configuration is possible by checking dimensional compatibility (height, double quarter-turn start configuration). Contact WoodUp with precise measurements before ordering.
Should the handrail be treated even if it is under a canopy or porch?
Yes, even under cover, an exterior handrail is subject to air humidity and temperature variations. Treatment is always recommended, but the frequency of renewal can be reduced (every 3-5 years instead of 2-3 years) for well-sheltered wood.
What is the difference between the ALBULA exterior start handrail and the FURKA exterior handrail?
The ALBULA handrail (ID 976) is designed for the start of an ALBULA double quarter-turn staircase - it positions the beginning of the balustrade at the bottom of the staircase. The FURKA handrail (ID 1136) is designed for the upper quarter-turn of the FURKA staircase. Both are exterior handrails with wooden spindles but for different staircase models and different positions on the flight.
