Fix the 4 vertical planks to the stringer or the steps. Then fix the horizontal rails, checking the level. Spacing less than 11 cm, height 90 cm minimum. For outdoor use, apply a wood stain treatment before installation. Renew every 2–3 years.

Maintenance and protection

Douglas fir and larch are naturally resistant outdoors. A wood stain or saturating oil treatment before installation is recommended to preserve the colour. Without treatment, natural greying occurs within 6–12 months with no loss of mechanical strength.

Renew the treatment every 2 to 3 years depending on exposure. Inspect the fixings annually.

Yes, this handrail is reversible – it can be installed on either the right or left side going up, depending on your configuration. No modification is required.

What finish should be applied to this wooden handrail?

The handrail requires an abrasion-resistant finish: a 2-coat satin varnish is recommended. Oil-wax or paint for the balusters and newel posts depending on the décor. Apply the finish before final fixing.

Does the spacing between the balusters comply with the safety standard?

The spacing must be less than 11 cm (standard NF P01-012). Check the actual spacing after installation. The minimum height of the handrail is 90 cm from the nosing of the step.

Should the wood be treated before or after installation?

Before, preferably: apply the finish to all components before final fixing so that hidden areas are also treated. Allow to dry completely before fixing.

Are the screws provided sufficient to fix the handrail to the steps?
