The FURKA is an upper quarter-turn staircase from the Comfort range, available in glued laminated beech, oak or fir. It shares the SELA’s key dimensions (18 cm rise / 22 cm going / 288 cm floor-to-floor height), with an upper quarter-turn layout requiring 346 cm of floor space. The FURKA has 15 treads + 1 landing nosing (15 and a half rises) and requires a 346x82 cm stairwell opening.

The Blondel formula is met: 2x18 + 22 = 58, within the recommended range for comfortable climbing. The FURKA is sold without a stair railing; one is available as an option and can be fitted after assembly. The handing (right or left) must be specified when ordering. The wood is delivered unfinished and must be finished before use.

The stair railing can be added after the staircase has been assembled and can be fitted on the right or left. Drill pilot holes in beech and oak. At least two people are needed. Apply the finish after installation is complete.

Care and protection

Apply a suitable finish before first use: 2–3 coats of varnish on beech and oak, or hardwax oil on fir. Because Comfort-range staircases are often chosen as main staircases, a quality finish such as varnish is recommended even for fir. Refinish every 5–7 years. Clean with a damp cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner.

They have the same general dimensions (18 cm rise / 22 cm going / 288 cm floor-to-floor height) and require very similar floor space (FURKA 346 cm / SELA 351 cm). The difference is 5 cm of floor space – negligible in practice. Both models suit the same type of layout. If your available space is limited to exactly 346 cm, choose the FURKA.

Can the FURKA be cut down for a height of 270 cm?

Yes. For 270 cm, removing one tread (15 rises x 18 cm = exactly 270 cm) gives the required height without changing the rise. Alternatively, trim the stringers slightly according to the chart in the instructions to keep all 15 treads with an adjusted rise. Check the finished floor and ceiling levels before making any changes.

Why does the Comfort range have a landing nosing when the Standard range does not always include one?

The landing nosing relates to the calculation of the number of treads and the rise. With an 18 cm rise over 288 cm, 288/18 = 16 rises: 15 treads + 1 rise to the landing. A landing nosing is therefore required to reach the upper floor level exactly. The Standard range (20 cm rise over 280 cm: 280/20 = 14) does not always have this additional half-element.

Is the FURKA suitable as a main staircase for older people?

Yes – it is an excellent configuration. The 22 cm going allows you to place your whole foot on each tread without it overhanging the front, while the 18 cm rise reduces the effort of climbing.
