ALBULA Double Quarter-Turn Staircase – Comfort Range, 288 cm, 18 cm Riser Height, 22 cm Tread Depth

The ALBULA is a double quarter-turn staircase from the Comfort range, available in laminated beech, oak or fir. Its double quarter-turn layout changes direction twice by 90°, allowing installation in a rectangular 164x175 cm stairwell opening. The floor-to-floor height is 288 cm with 15 treads, an 18 cm riser height and a 22 cm tread depth – optimal proportions according to the Blondel formula.

The width is 80 cm. Available with or without risers and a handrail. Specify right- or left-hand orientation when ordering. The rectangular 164x175 cm stairwell opening (not square) is easier to accommodate than the 180x180 cm double quarter-turn models: it can fit where a square opening would not be possible. The ALBULA is the Comfort version of the ALBULA Standard (same footprint, 22 cm tread depth versus 19 cm for the Standard).

Key points

  • ✓ Comfort range: 18 cm riser height / 22 cm tread depth – optimal stair proportions according to the Blondel formula
  • ✓ Rectangular 164x175 cm stairwell opening: not square – easier to accommodate than the 180x180 cm double quarter-turn models
  • ✓ Three wood species: fir, beech or oak to suit your budget and preferred look
  • ✓ Double quarter-turn: two changes of direction – suitable for L-shaped spaces
  • ✓ 210x30 mm cross-section: thick treads with good rigidity under load

Installation advice

Check the stairwell opening (164x175 cm minimum) using finished dimensions – it must be rectangular, not square. Determine the orientation of the double quarter-turn before ordering; it cannot be changed. Pre-drill beech and oak. At least two people are needed to assemble a double quarter-turn staircase. If a handrail is included, install it during assembly, not after the staircase is fully assembled. Apply the finish after installation is complete.

Care and protection

Apply 2–3 coats of floor varnish (beech, oak) or an oil-wax finish (fir) before first use. For a heavily used main double quarter-turn staircase, floor varnish is recommended for all wood species. Reapply every 5–7 years. For routine cleaning, use a damp cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner.

WoodUp advice

The ALBULA differs from other WoodUp double quarter-turn staircases in its rectangular 164x175 cm stairwell opening: it is narrower in one direction (164 cm) and longer in the other (175 cm). This asymmetry allows installation where a square 180x180 cm opening is not possible. Check the orientation of the opening carefully before ordering (164 cm along the short axis and 175 cm along the long axis): a reversed 175x164 cm opening may cause orientation problems.

Good to know before buying: the ALBULA Comfort range offers the same climbing comfort as the straight GAVIA (18 cm riser height / 22 cm tread depth) in a double quarter-turn configuration. If your space allows, it offers the best balance of comfort and flexible positioning.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ALBULA and GOULES / ROCLES 180x180?

The ALBULA is in the Comfort range (18 cm riser height / 22 cm tread depth) and requires a rectangular 164x175 cm stairwell opening. The GOULES and ROCLES 180x180 are in the Standard range (19 cm riser height / 21 cm tread depth) and require a square 180x180 cm opening. The ALBULA is more comfortable and requires a smaller opening; the 180x180 models are Standard but need a larger square opening.

Can the ALBULA stairwell opening be square (165x165 cm)?

The recommended stairwell opening is 164x175 cm (rectangular). A 175x175 cm opening is compatible and provides even more clearance along the shorter dimension. A 164x164 cm opening is too short along the longer dimension. The 175 cm dimension is the key requirement – do not go below it.

Can the ALBULA be cut down to a height of 270 cm?

Yes. For 270 cm, removing one tread (15 steps x 18 cm = exactly 270 cm) gives the desired height without cutting down the stringers. Alternatively, trim them slightly according to the chart in the instructions to retain 15 treads with a slightly different step height. Check measurements against the finished floor and ceiling.

Beech or oak for the ALBULA – which should you choose?

For a heavily used main double quarter-turn staircase, laminated oak is the most durable (700 kg/m³). Laminated beech is the balanced choice, offering good strength, a subtle grain and a light colour. Fir suits a tighter budget if carefully finished. The quarter-turn components are subject to additional stresses, so dense woods (beech and oak) are recommended.

Can the ALBULA be installed without professional help?

Yes, if you have good DIY skills and two people to do the work. The instructions are detailed. Particular points to watch with double quarter-turn staircases: follow the assembly sequence strictly (start with the lower quarter-turn section, then the stringers, then the treads), and check that everything is level and plumb at each stage. Allow a full day for two experienced people.

Which finish should you use for a fir or oak ALBULA subject to heavy use?

For a Comfort double quarter-turn staircase used intensively as the main staircase, 3 coats of water-based polyurethane floor varnish provide optimal protection, whatever the wood species. The tapered treads in the quarter-turn sections wear unevenly; a thicker finish helps compensate for this. Reapply every 4–5 years on the turning treads and every 7 years on the straight flights.
