Installation advice
Check the floor space required (273 cm) and the stairwell opening (273x82 cm) before ordering. Choose the handing (right or left): this choice is final when you order. Sort the 5 packages according to the instructions before starting assembly. Drill pilot holes in the beech before inserting any screws. At least two people are needed. The stair railing can be added after assembly.
Care and protection
Apply 2–3 coats of stair varnish before first use. Glued laminated beech marks quickly without protection. Refinish every 5–7 years. The landing nosing, which bears direct foot traffic, may need refinishing more often. Clean with a damp cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner.
WoodUp tip
The BAVAT Beech is a quality upper quarter-turn staircase, packed to make assembly easier: each component is packed separately and identified, reducing assembly errors. The 5 separate packages also make it easier to carry through confined spaces. Carrying the stringers (package 1) separately from the quarter-turn components (package 2) avoids unwelcome surprises in narrow corridors.
Before you buy: the BAVAT comes in several versions (beech, oak and fir). If you want beech, check that you are ordering the beech version. The treads are 30 mm thick.
Frequently asked questions
What is a landing nosing and how is it fitted?
The landing nosing is a beech component fitted at the edge of the stairwell opening, in line with the top tread. It creates a neat transition between the top tread and the upper-floor covering. Fit it last, once the staircase has been fully assembled and secured. It can be screwed or glued in place, depending on the adjacent floor covering.
What is the difference between the BAVAT Beech and the fir NERONNE upper quarter-turn staircases?
The NERONNE is made of fir and belongs to the Standard range (20 cm rise / 19 cm going). It requires 287 cm of floor space, has an 85x287 cm stairwell opening and is likely delivered in 3 packages. The BAVAT Beech is made of beech and belongs to the Standard range (same rise and going). It requires 273 cm of floor space, has a 273x82 cm stairwell opening and comes in 5 packages. The BAVAT takes up slightly less floor space and is made of beech, which is more durable. The fir NERONNE is more economical.
Is the BAVAT Beech also available in oak or fir?
Yes. The BAVAT is available in several wood species: beech (this model), glued laminated oak (BAVAT Oak) and fir (BAVAT Fir). Their dimensions are identical (the same floor space, stairwell opening and floor-to-floor height). The choice of wood affects the appearance and durability. See the BAVAT Oak and BAVAT Fir product pages for details.
Can the stair railing be fitted after the BAVAT has been assembled?
Yes. The stair railing is optional and can be fitted after the staircase has been assembled. On an upper quarter-turn staircase, it cannot be reversed: its handing must match that of the staircase. Fixings are supplied with the railing.
Why is the BAVAT delivered in 5 packages rather than 2 or 3?
Packing the staircase in 5 separate packages (stringers / quarter-turn section / posts / treads / risers) makes handling easier and reduces the risk of damage in transit. The stringers (package 1) are 3060 mm long, while the quarter-turn section (package 2) is bulky. Keeping them separate means they can be carried upstairs one at a time through narrow spaces. This packaging also makes it easier to sort the components before assembly.
Can the BAVAT be cut down for a height of 260 cm?
Yes. For 260 cm, remove one tread (13 rises x 20 cm = exactly 260 cm) or trim the stringers slightly according to the chart in the instructions. The first option, removing a tread, is simpler. The second, trimming the stringers, lets you keep the same number of treads with a slightly adjusted rise. Check the finished floor and ceiling levels before making any changes.
