BROSSES Quarter Turn at the Bottom Staircase - Solid Fir, 280 cm, 13 Treads
The BROSSES staircase is a solid fir quarter-turn-at-the-bottom staircase, designed for interior installations where the floor footprint must be kept to a minimum. Its quarter-turn-at-the-bottom configuration allows a change of direction from the very start of the climb, which facilitates installation in standard stairwells, both in new builds and renovations. Delivered in 3 parcels, it is assembled on site following the included instructions.
Designed for a floor-to-floor height of 280 cm with 13 treads and a tread height of 20 cm. The width with handrail is 82 cm, for a recommended stairwell of 85x282 cm. Tread sections: 200x28 mm with risers / 200x32 mm without risers. The staircase is available in right or left hand, with or without risers and handrail. Raw fir — finish to be applied after installation.

Installation advice
Determine the direction of the quarter turn at the bottom before ordering. To find out: stand at the foot of the staircase facing upwards — the direction of the turn at the bottom corresponds to the side towards which the first flight of treads turns. This choice is final at the time of ordering and cannot be changed after delivery.
Check that the stairwell meets the minimum recommended dimensions: 85x282 cm. Assemble the treads into the stringers following the order indicated in the instructions. Fix the staircase securely to the floor and the upper floor. Apply the protective finish only after complete installation.
The BROSSES staircase is delivered with the handrail — this must be fitted during installation of the staircase.
Maintenance and protection
The raw fir delivered must receive a protective finish before first use. Without protection, the wood marks quickly. For a quarter-turn staircase with daily use, a 2-coat varnish is recommended. For less intensive use, an oil-wax is sufficient. Routine cleaning: broom or slightly damp cloth. Renew the protection every 5–7 years depending on traffic.
WoodUp tip
The BROSSES staircase delivered in 3 parcels facilitates handling in narrow corridors or spaces with limited access. The 3 parcels allow the elements to be brought up one after another rather than manoeuvring a complete kit. Check that access to your site allows the stringers (the longest pieces) to be handled before confirming the order.
Important before purchasing: the right/left hand direction and the riser/handrail options must be decided before ordering. These choices are final — an incorrect direction means ordering a new staircase. If in doubt, draw a sketch of your room with the stairwell and contact our customer service for confirmation.
Frequently asked questions
How do I determine whether I should order the BROSSES in right or left hand?
Stand at the bottom of the staircase facing upwards. If the first flight heads to your right before going straight up, it is a right-hand quarter turn at the bottom. If it heads to your left, it is a left-hand quarter turn at the bottom. To visualise: look at your stairwell from below — on which side is it offset relative to your starting position?
Can the BROSSES be cut down for a floor-to-floor height of 260 cm?
Yes. To achieve a floor-to-floor height of approximately 260 cm, simply remove 1 tread (13 treads x 20 cm = 260 cm). The cut is made on the stringers according to the cutting chart provided, and a slight adjustment to the first tread may be necessary. The cut is made on the stringers according to the cutting chart provided, and a slight adjustment to the first tread may be necessary. Consult the instructions before proceeding.
What is the minimum stairwell width for the BROSSES?
The minimum stairwell is 85 cm wide — an 80 cm stairwell would not be sufficient. For the footprint, allow a minimum of 282 cm in the direction of the climb. These dimensions apply to the finished stairwell opening, including cladding and finishes.
What is the difference between the BROSSES and the MOLEDE quarter turn at the bottom?
The BROSSES is in fir with 13 treads and a footprint of 282 cm. The MOLEDE is in glued laminated beech with 14 treads and a footprint of 282 cm as well. For the same stairwell, the MOLEDE offers an extra tread and a more wear-resistant wood — but at a higher price. The BROSSES is the economical solution for the same footprint.
Why 3 parcels instead of one?
The quarter turn at the bottom comprises several distinct sub-assemblies: stringers, the quarter-turn module, and treads. Separating them into 3 parcels allows each element to be handled individually in corridors, existing stairwells, or narrow access points. This also facilitates transport and reduces the risk of damage to the longest pieces.
Can storage be created under the BROSSES quarter turn at the bottom?
Yes. The quarter-turn-at-the-bottom configuration creates a triangular space beneath the first flight. With a footprint of 282 cm and a width of 82 cm, this space can accommodate a cupboard, shelves, or a storage nook. The available height depends on the height of the first tread and the pitch of the flight — plan this arrangement before installation to adapt the cladding accordingly.
