MOLEDE Bottom Quarter-Turn Staircase - Glulam Beech, 280 cm, 14 Steps
The MOLEDE staircase is a bottom quarter-turn staircase in glulam beech, supplied as a kit for on-site assembly. Its bottom quarter-turn configuration means that the 90° change of direction is located at the bottom of the flight — which facilitates its integration into rectangular stairwell openings and allows space to be freed up under the first flight of steps. Designed for a floor-to-floor height of 280 cm with 14 steps, it has a width of 80 cm and a recommended stairwell opening of 85x282 cm.
The step height is 20 cm with a tread depth of 19 cm. The step thickness is 30 mm. The staircase can be trimmed in height according to the instructions supplied, allowing it to be adapted to floor-to-floor heights below 280 cm. Available with or without risers, in right or left direction.

Installation advice
The direction of the quarter-turn (right or left) must be determined before ordering based on the room configuration and the position of the stairwell opening. This choice cannot be changed after delivery. To determine it, stand at the foot of the staircase and identify the side towards which you wish to turn at the bottom of the ascent.
Check the stairwell opening (85x282 cm recommended) on finished dimensions. Assemble the stringers, steps, and risers according to the instructions, fix to the floor and upper landing. The handrail can be fitted after the staircase has been assembled. A minimum of two people is required to position the beech stringers.
Maintenance and protection
Raw beech marks quickly without protection. Apply a staircase varnish in 2–3 coats before first use. Renewal every 5–7 years depending on traffic. Routine cleaning: slightly damp cloth, pH neutral. Check that fixings are tight annually.
WoodUp tip
The bottom quarter-turn offers a practical advantage that is often underestimated: the space under the first flight can be used for a cupboard or storage. With a footprint of 282 cm by 80 cm, this space can accommodate shelving or a utility area depending on the available height under the first flight. Plan this integration before installation to allow for the necessary cladding.
Important before purchasing: the minimum stairwell opening width is 85 cm — an 80 cm opening is not sufficient and would not allow this staircase to be installed comfortably. Check precisely before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose between a bottom quarter-turn and a top quarter-turn staircase?
The bottom quarter-turn (MOLEDE) places the turn at the bottom of the ascent — the staircase starts in one direction and turns right from the outset. It is suitable when the stairwell opening is at an angle relative to the start of the staircase. The top quarter-turn (NERONNE) places the turn at the top — the staircase climbs straight for most of the flight and then turns at the top. It is suitable when the stairwell opening is offset from the axis of ascent.
Can the MOLEDE be trimmed to a height of 260 cm?
Yes. A 20 cm trim on the stringers is required. The trimming is carried out according to the chart provided in the instructions — it slightly alters the height of the first step. Check the floor-to-floor height on finished floor and ceiling before proceeding with the trim.
Is the 85 cm stairwell opening width sufficient to fit a handrail?
The 85 cm stairwell opening corresponds to the footprint of the staircase including the handrail. If you add a handrail on one side, the usable passage width is reduced by the thickness of the handrail. To maintain a clear passage of 80 cm with a handrail, the stairwell opening must be at least 85–87 cm.
Which handrail is compatible with the MOLEDE bottom quarter-turn staircase?
The handrail compatible with the MOLEDE bottom quarter-turn staircase is the PUECH beech handrail, specifically designed for bottom quarter-turn staircases. Check the direction (right or left) at the time of ordering — the handrail is linked to the direction of the staircase.
Is beech better suited than another wood for a quarter-turn staircase?
Glulam beech is particularly well suited to quarter-turn staircases as it combines dimensional stability (no warping), high wear resistance, and precise machinability — which is important for the balanced steps of the turn. Glulam, compared to solid wood, reduces the risk of seasonal deformation in long components such as stringers.
Can storage be created under the MOLEDE bottom quarter-turn staircase?
Yes. The footprint of 282 cm by 80 cm creates a triangular space under the first flight. The available height depends on the height of the first step and the pitch of the flight. This space can be clad and closed off with a door or shelving. Plan this integration before installation to adapt the cladding and wall fixings.
