The SUCHET straight staircase in solid fir is supplied as a kit for a 280 cm floor-to-floor height, with 13 treads. It is 80 cm wide without the handrail (82 cm with it) and has a 229 cm footprint — more compact than a standard 14-tread staircase. The recommended stairwell opening is 229x85 cm. The rise is 20 cm and the going 16.8 cm — shorter than in the Standard range, which is worth considering for comfort when climbing.
The treads have a 200x28 mm cross-section and come with risers. The fir is supplied unfinished — a protective finish must be applied before first use. Available with or without risers and a handrail. Delivered in 2 packages.

Assemble the stringers, treads and risers according to the instructions. Secure the staircase to the floor and upper support using fixings suitable for the materials. Two people are recommended when positioning the stringers. The handrail can be added after assembly.
Care and protection
Apply a protective finish before first use. For fir, two coats of stair varnish provide good protection (reapply every 5–7 years). Hardwax oil is suitable for moderate use. Clean with a slightly damp cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner.

The SUCHET is a compact straight staircase: its 229 cm footprint makes it an option where there is not enough space for a 14-tread staircase (259–273 cm). However, its 16.8 cm going is shorter than the comfortable standard (a minimum of 19 cm is recommended). Before ordering, check that this tread depth suits the people who will use it — a longer going is preferable for young children or people with reduced mobility.
Before you buy: the shorter going means your foot will extend slightly beyond the front of the tread when descending. This is common with compact staircases, but less agile users should be aware of it and face the staircase as they descend.

Why does the SUCHET have 13 treads instead of 14?
For a floor-to-floor height of 280 cm with 13 treads, the rise is 280/14 = 20 cm (counting the upper floor as the final step). A conventional 14-tread staircase achieves the same height but has a longer going. The SUCHET reduces its footprint by using 13 treads and a 16.8 cm going — saving 30 cm of floor space compared with a 14-tread staircase with a 19 cm going.
Is a 16.8 cm going sufficient for everyday use?
A 16.8 cm going is workable for an agile adult who uses the staircase frequently — the foot quickly adapts to its dimensions. For children under 8, older people or people with reduced mobility, a going of 19 cm or more is safer. Descending requires the most care: with a short going, it is safer to face the staircase as you descend, as you would on a ladder.
Which staircase should I choose if I only have 230 cm of floor space?
With a 229 cm footprint, the SUCHET is the most compact straight staircase in the WoodUp range for a height of 280 cm. If even 229 cm is too much, space-saver staircases (AULAC, BASSEYRE) or alternating-tread staircases (NUGERE) take up even less space, but are steeper.
Can the SUCHET be cut down?
Yes. If your floor-to-floor height is less than 280 cm, the stringers can be cut down according to the chart in the instructions. Cutting them down changes the height of the first step. For a height of 260 cm, approximately 20 cm would be cut from the stringers.
What is the difference between the SUCHET and the MORENO?
The MORENO has 15 treads over a height of 285 cm, with an 18.3 cm going and a 273 cm footprint. The SUCHET has 13 treads over a height of 280 cm, with a 16.8 cm going and a 229 cm footprint. The SUCHET is more compact but steeper. The MORENO is more comfortable but needs more floor space.
Should the fir be treated before or after installation?
Apply the finish after the staircase and handrail have been fully installed. Hidden surfaces (undersides of treads and inner faces of stringers) can be treated before assembly for complete protection. Do not put off applying the finish until after first use — unfinished fir quickly absorbs dirt.
