NERONNE Top Quarter-Turn Staircase - Solid Fir, 280 cm, 13 Treads
The NERONNE top quarter-turn staircase in solid fir is designed to connect two levels while optimising the available opening. Its top quarter-turn configuration means that the 90° change of direction is located at the top of the flight, just before reaching the landing. This configuration is particularly suitable when the opening is offset relative to the main axis of ascent, or when the starting room requires setting off in a different direction from that of the opening.
Designed for a floor-to-floor height of 280 cm with 13 treads and a tread height of 20 cm, the footprint is 287 cm in the direction of ascent. The recommended opening is 85x287 cm minimum. Tread sections: 200x28 mm with risers / 200x32 mm without risers. Available in right or left hand, with or without risers and handrail.

Installation advice
Determine the direction of the quarter-turn before ordering: top quarter-turn right or left. To find out, imagine yourself at the top of the staircase facing the landing — the direction of the turn corresponds to the side towards which you turn to reach the landing. This choice is final at the time of ordering.
Check the opening (85x287 cm minimum) on finished dimensions. The handrail is not reversible on this staircase: the installation side is linked to the direction ordered. If a handrail is planned, fit it during assembly: the quarter-turn newel post acts as the handrail newel post and must be managed from the assembly stage. Fix the staircase to the floor, to the opening, and to the wall in accordance with the instructions.
Maintenance and protection
Apply an interior finish before first use. For fir, a 2-coat staircase varnish provides effective protection (renewal every 5–7 years); an oil-wax is suitable for lighter use. Routine cleaning with a dry cloth or slightly damp cloth. Check the tightness of fixings once a year.
WoodUp Advice
The difference between top quarter-turn and bottom quarter-turn is not merely aesthetic — it determines the position of the opening within the room. A top quarter-turn is often chosen when the ascent runs along a wall and the opening is in line with the arrival corridor, with a lateral offset at the top. Draw a plan of your room with the opening before choosing between bottom and top — a wrong choice of direction means having to reorder the staircase.
Good to know before purchasing: the handrail is not reversible on this model — the handrail side (right or left) is directly linked to the direction of the staircase ordered. Please check the required direction carefully before confirming the order.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose the right or left hand configuration for the NERONNE?
Stand at the bottom of the staircase, facing the ascent. If the turn at the top goes to your right, choose "top quarter-turn right". If it goes to your left, choose "top quarter-turn left". If in doubt, draw a plan of your room with the position of the opening and the direction of ascent — WoodUp customer service can help you confirm the direction.
What is the difference between 200x28 mm (with risers) and 200x32 mm (without)?
The tread section changes depending on the version: 200x28 mm with risers (closed staircase) and 200x32 mm without risers (open staircase). The version without risers uses a thicker tread (32 mm) to compensate for the absence of the rigidity provided by the risers. Both versions use the same stringers.
Can the NERONNE be cut down for a height of 260 cm?
Yes. For a top quarter-turn, the cut is made at the bottom of the stringers. For 260 cm, the cut is approximately 20 cm, which removes one tread. Check the cutting chart provided in the attached documents on the product page before proceeding.
Can the handrail be installed after assembly?
The handrail is not reversible: its side is linked to the direction of the staircase (right or left). The quarter-turn newel post also serves as the handrail newel post — if you order without a handrail, this post will need to be cut to the correct height during installation. If in doubt, contact WoodUp customer service before ordering.
What is the minimum opening for the NERONNE with handrail?
Without handrail: minimum opening of 85x287 cm. With handrail (total width 82 cm), allow for an opening of at least 87x287 cm to accommodate assembly tolerances. These dimensions apply to the finished opening, including all cladding. A dimensioned drawing is available to download in the attached documents on the product page.
Why choose the NERONNE over a straight staircase?
A straight staircase requires the entire footprint (287 cm for the NERONNE) to be available in a straight line. The top quarter-turn allows this footprint to be distributed across two perpendicular directions, which is essential when the room configuration or the position of the opening does not allow for a complete straight-line alignment.
