Space-saving
Traditional or contemporary space-saving staircase
Woodup offers you a solution for accessing an upper floor without encroaching too much on the available space on the ground floor. Compare our different staircase models space-saving: spiral staircase, loft-ladder style staircase, straight staircase, quarter-turn staircase. For accessing a home mezzanine, an upper floor, a loft, a shop's stock room, a compact cellar, the space-saving staircase is perfect. Available with 11 to 14 steps, with a floor-to-floor height of 2.04 to 3 m depending on the model, the space-saving staircase is beautiful, handcrafted, and original.
The space-saving staircase, a product for complex layouts
The Woodup space-saving staircase is a product that provides safe access to heights of up to 3 m. It is not a retractable staircase; it is intended to remain permanently installed in the room. The indoor or outdoor space-saving staircase is contemporary or traditional, to blend perfectly with the décor of a home or a shop.
The space-saving staircase features straight or alternating steps, delivered with or without a handrail. The ideal product for layouts with no spare space, the space-saving staircase is intended for occasional use, such as for a mezzanine staircase. Space-saving staircases are not recommended for children or people with mobility difficulties.
Choose your space-saving staircase
Access to upper floors in compact spaces is a real challenge. Woodup offers you a range of space-saving staircases known as Japanese-step staircases, or alternating steps.
The principle is simple: create a steeper staircase while maintaining a certain step depth. The staircase is characterised by cut-out steps that do not overlap. You simply climb the staircase by alternating your right and left foot depending on the step, starting on the right foot.
To improve your comfort and safety, Woodup also offers the loft ladder with steps adjustable on metal pivots. If you have the necessary space, the quarter-turn space-saving staircase at the bottom or top is also a product worth considering.
Space-saving staircase height up to 3 metres
Opt for the Metallica or Basseyre space-saving staircase to access an exceptional height of 2.87 or 3 m. We offer you several space-saving staircase models for accessing heights above 2.50 m. Some outdoor models (with straight steps) are available with 14 steps, for a height of 2.2 to 3 m.
Width of our space-saving models
From design to manufacture, we think about making it easier to arrange and move around your home, your shop, or your workplace. Our products are available in different widths. For the narrowest models, from 54 to 65 cm. For greater comfort, you will also find wider products, up to 90 cm.
The space-saving staircase: low to very low footprint
The Woodup space-saving staircase is available as a spiral staircase, straight staircase, or quarter-turn staircase. Choose the kit staircase suited to your interior, for example:
- Nugere staircase: very low-footprint staircase (1,450 to 1,650 mm);
- Chery staircase: space-saving spiral staircase with alternating steps;
- Adret staircase: quarter-turn staircase at the bottom or top, stairwell 180 x 70 cm.
Woodup space-saving staircase design
The Woodup space-saving staircase is available in different styles. The Chery staircase is contemporary, ideal for a hair salon, a barber, or a modern interior. To install a chalet-style all-wood staircase, opt for the space-saving pine staircase; the Aulac staircase is a product that meets your expectations.
From alternating steps to straight steps
Saving real space is possible with the alternating-step staircase. Make your choice from our various models (straight staircase, spiral staircase, space-saving spiral staircase), in a traditional or contemporary style. You can also choose safety and opt for straight steps, with the compact staircase (1.8 to 2.2 m).
The natural and warm style of wood
Wood is a reliable choice for a staircase. In beech, pine, or oak, a wooden staircase always creates a warm, welcoming, cosy atmosphere. Depending on the room (office, hallway, living room, etc.), choose a wood with a suitable and attractive shade. Note: beech and pine are lighter-toned species than oak. With these wood species, the aesthetic is elegant and maintenance is minimal.
The contemporary style of wood and metal
Are you looking for a solution to fit out a loft in a modern interior? The wood and metal space-saving staircase fits perfectly in any tight space. This style breathes naturalness while giving the staircase an urban character that creates contrast. The staircase structure is often made of steel, with wooden steps (beech or oak).
The traditional loft-ladder style staircase
Woodup offers an original solution for small flats or compact interiors. Our range includes models inspired by the loft ladder. This staircase is straight, but features real steps with an adjustable incline. This feature allows the depth to be adapted. The wood species available are pine, beech, or oak.
Finishing and treatment: what you need to know
The majority of our staircases are delivered raw, ready for treatment. Apply a finishing/treatment product to extend its lifespan and maintain all its charm. Several products are available: paint, wood stain, hard oil, floor varnish specially formulated for staircases. Take care to apply this finish before first use.
How to choose your staircase?
Choosing the wrong staircase model is not an option, whether in terms of use, design, or safety. To avoid any mistakes, follow our 5-point method. It was developed by our space-saving staircase experts.
Available space
If you are looking for a space-saving staircase, it is because the interior space of your home is limited. What will determine the staircase model is: the ceiling height first, then the available floor area and the shape of the stairwell.
Footprint
The footprint is the space occupied by the staircase once installed in your interior. It includes the dimensions of the staircase, including the handrail and balustrade. Also take into account the entry and exit space to ensure comfortable use.
Headroom
This is an important criterion. Headroom is a minimum dimension that prevents you from hitting your head when going up or down. In practice, the "safety" solution is to leave 190 cm between the step directly below the edge of the stairwell.
The type of staircase
In practice, it is found that staircases with straight steps offer greater safety. Are you looking for a very compact staircase? Opt for the alternating-step or Japanese-step staircase. However, please be aware that this requires an adjustment period.
Intended use
When space is limited, you look for the right solution. However, think about the primary use of the staircase. If it is a main staircase, avoid Japanese-step or alternating-step staircases. In terms of width, aim for as close to 80 cm as possible for greater comfort.

What is the difference between a space-saving staircase and a loft ladder?
The space-saving staircase can be a straight model, quarter-turn, with alternating steps, or modular. Unlike the loft ladder, its steps are not rungs but real steps.
Can a spiral staircase replace a space-saving model?
Yes, if the stairwell and the floor space allow it. Measure the dimensions carefully, and allow one metre in front of the first step to facilitate access. The diameter of a compact spiral staircase is 120 cm.
How do I choose the diameter of my spiral staircase?
Choosing a staircase starts from the bottom up. Begin by measuring the size of the stairwell. It can be square or round. Then, aim for as close to 140 or 160 cm as possible. This diameter ensures comfortable use.
Is a space-saving staircase suitable for children?
No. If the staircase is to be used daily by children, choose a different model. Going up and down requires care and attention. For children, if space is limited, opt instead for a spiral staircase or a quarter-turn staircase.
How long does it take to assemble a Woodup kit staircase?
A DIY enthusiast with a good level of skill should allow approximately one day for assembly. We have designed a simple solution, including a detailed assembly guide. Please note, for added safety, make sure to have someone assist you.
