Oval pine handrail 70x40 mm — length 100 cm, indoor use

This solid pine handrail has an oval profile of 70x40 mm and a 21x6 mm groove for fixing to wall brackets. Pine is a lightweight softwood (~500 kg/m³), with a light colour and straight grain, easy to work and paint. This product is available in 5 lengths: 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 cm, covering both short landings and full straight staircases.

The 70x40 mm oval profile provides a wide palm resting surface (70 mm) and a thickness (40 mm) that aids lateral grip. Pine is a softwood — it may mark under heavy use. For a high-traffic staircase, oak, beech or ash versions offer better abrasion resistance. For interior use only.

Key features

  • Oval profile 70x40 mm: wide grip, generous palm resting surface
  • Length 100 cm: suitable for short landings, first and last steps, low-span balustrades
  • Lightweight wood (~500 kg/m³): easy to handle, cut and paint
  • Customisable: raw wood receptive to paint, varnish and oil to match interior décor
  • 21x6 mm groove: check compatibility before ordering brackets

Installation advice

Select brackets compatible with the 21x6 mm groove. For 100 cm, 2 brackets are sufficient — position them 15–20 cm from each end. Install the handrail at a height between 80 and 100 cm from the step nosing or finished floor.

Pine is a softwood — tighten the fixing screws without over-tightening to avoid marking the surface. If cutting is required, pine saws easily. Sand the cut edge with 120-grit paper before applying the finish. Apply the chosen finish before fitting if possible.

Maintenance and protection

Raw pine must be treated before use. Its light colour and even surface readily accept all types of interior finish:

  • Interior wood paint: after grain-filler primer — ideal for integrating the handrail into a coloured décor
  • Polyurethane varnish: 2 to 3 coats, good resistance to friction, durability 4 to 6 years
  • Interior oil-wax: natural matt finish, renewal every 2 to 3 years

For routine maintenance, a slightly damp cloth is sufficient. As pine is a softwood, marks may appear under heavy use — a light fine sanding followed by a fresh coat of finish will restore the surface.

WoodUp tip

Important before purchasing: pine is a resinous wood reserved for interior use — do not use outdoors. Oval profile 70x40 mm compatible with brackets featuring a 21x5 mm groove. Wall fixings not included. Treat before fitting (oil or floor varnish). Interior use only.

Frequently asked questions

What is an oval profile and how does it differ from a round or moulded profile?

The oval profile here measures 70x40 mm: its 70 mm width provides a generous resting surface on top, while the 40 mm thickness aids lateral hand grip. This geometry differs from the round profile (uniform cylindrical grip) and the square moulded profile (softened corners but square cross-section). For users who rest their hand flat on the handrail, the oval profile is often perceived as more natural.

Which brackets are compatible with this oval handrail?

Brackets must be designed for a 21x6 mm groove. Check compatibility before ordering — the 21x6 mm groove is slightly different from the 21x5 mm groove found on other models in the range. Black lacquered or bichrome steel brackets available from Woodup are compatible. Allow one bracket every 60 to 80 cm for secure fixing.

Can this handrail be used outdoors?

No. Pine is exclusively an interior wood. Without specific preservation treatment, it deteriorates quickly outdoors. For an outdoor handrail with an oval profile, choose douglas fir (class 3).

What finish should be applied to this pine handrail?

The wood is supplied raw and must be treated before use. For pine, a floor varnish or polyurethane varnish (2 to 3 coats) offers the best resistance to daily friction. An oil-wax gives a more natural finish but requires more frequent renewal. Apply the finish before fitting to cover all faces, including the groove and the ends.

At what height should this handrail be installed?

The recommended height for a private staircase is between 80 and 100 cm measured from the nosing of the step. For a corridor or landing, the height is measured from the finished floor. For people with reduced mobility, 90 cm is the generally recommended height. Install the handrail continuously along the full length, without interruption.

Can this handrail be cut to a specific length?

Yes. Pine can be cut with a circular saw or mitre saw using a fine-tooth blade. Sand the cut edge with 120-grit paper before applying the finish to the ends — bare wood is the most sensitive area to ambient moisture.
