Solid Wood Gate Slat 120 cm – Fir, Pine or Douglas, Section 91×21 or 80×20 mm
This natural solid wood gate slat measures 120 cm in length. Available in bevelled Fir and bevelled Douglas section 91×21 mm, or in rounded Pine section 80×20 mm. Sold individually for the manufacture or renovation of double-leaf gates. This 120 cm length corresponds to the standard height of garden gates and property entrances. A water-repellent treatment is essential before outdoor installation, particularly for Pine and Fir.

Installation tips
For a standard gate spanning 3 m wide: allow approximately 33 slats at 91×21 mm section edge to edge. Allow 3 rails per leaf (bottom, middle, top) and a diagonal brace for rigidity. Always pre-drill at 120 cm height to avoid splitting at the end of the slat. Use stainless steel screws 4×50 mm minimum.
Spacing between slats: a solid gate acts like a sail in the wind, placing significant strain on the hinges and posts. A spacing of 15 to 20 mm between slats significantly reduces mechanical stress — recommended for wide gates and windy areas. A spacing of 10 mm gives a near-opaque finish. Beyond 25 mm, the slatted effect allows light and sight lines through.
Maintenance and protection
Apply an exterior stain or saturator before installation, on all faces and end grain. Renew every 2 to 3 years. Douglas can be left untreated and will naturally turn grey — an annual oil is sufficient to maintain the appearance. Inspect the lower ends of the slats annually.
Frequently asked questions
How many slats are needed to build a 3 m wide gate?
For a 3 m gate (2 leaves of 1.5 m) with 91×21 mm slats edge to edge: approximately 16 to 17 slats per leaf in 91×21 mm section edge to edge, i.e. 32 to 34 slats for both leaves. With a 15–20 mm spacing, allow approximately 13 to 14 slats per leaf.
Can these slats be cut lengthways to achieve a different height?
Yes. Solid wood can easily be cut with a circular saw or a mitre saw. If you cut at the bottom, immediately treat the exposed end grain with an end grain protection product.
Which section should I choose for a gate exposed to strong winds?
The 91×21 mm section (Fir or Douglas) is better suited to windy areas thanks to its 21 mm thickness. For very exposed windy locations, slats with a 150×24 mm section (solid Douglas gate range) offer significantly greater rigidity.
Is the 80×20 mm pine less wind-resistant than the 91×21 mm?
The thinner profile of the Pine (20 mm vs 21 mm) and its narrower width (80 mm vs 91 mm) make this profile slightly less rigid. For wide or wind-exposed gates, opt for Douglas or Fir 91×21 mm.
Are there complete kits for building a gate without having to calculate quantities yourself?
Yes. The double-leaf gate kit and the Douglas gates with moulded or straight slats (, 1235) are complete solutions including slats, rails and screws without having to calculate quantities.
