Installation advice

For a standard 3 m-wide gate, allow approximately 33 slats with a 91x21 mm section fitted edge to edge. Provide 3 rails per leaf (bottom, middle and top) and a diagonal brace for rigidity. Always pre-drill at the 120 cm height to prevent the slat ends from splitting. Use stainless steel screws of at least 4x50 mm.

Spacing between slats: a solid gate acts like a sail in the wind, placing considerable strain on the hinges and posts. Gaps of 15 to 20 mm between slats significantly reduce these forces and are recommended for wide gates and windy areas. A 10 mm gap gives an almost fully screened appearance. Beyond 25 mm, the open-slat effect lets light through and allows views through the gate.

Care and protection

Apply an exterior wood stain or saturating treatment before installation, covering all surfaces and end grain. Reapply every 2 to 3 years. Douglas fir can be left untreated and will naturally turn grey; an annual oil application is enough to maintain its appearance. Inspect the lower ends of the slats annually.

For a 3 m gate (two 1.5 m leaves) with 91x21 mm slats fitted edge to edge: approximately 16 to 17 slats per leaf, or 32 to 34 slats for both leaves. With gaps of 15-20 mm, allow approximately 13 to 14 slats per leaf.

Can these slats be cut to length for a different height?

Yes. Solid wood is easy to cut with a circular saw or mitre saw. If you cut the bottom, immediately treat the exposed end grain with an end-grain protective product.

Which section should I choose for a gate exposed to strong winds?

The 91x21 mm section (fir or Douglas fir) is better suited to windy areas thanks to its 21 mm thickness. For very exposed locations, 150x24 mm slats from the solid Douglas fir gate range offer considerably greater rigidity.

Is the 80x20 mm pine slat less resistant to wind than the 91x21 mm slat?
