Installation tips
Assemble the slats onto the cross rails, starting with the ones at the top and bottom ends. Then fit the diagonal brace from the bottom corner on the hinge side to the top corner on the latch side – this orientation prevents the gate from warping under its own weight. Pre-drill before screwing to prevent splitting. Apply the treatment before fitting the hardware to protect the areas beneath the fittings. Choose hinges that can support the weight of the finished gate leaf – approximately 12 to 15 kg.
Care and protection
Douglas fir: greys naturally without losing strength; apply exterior wood oil annually to maintain its colour. Pine: renew the wood stain or saturating oil every 2 years. Each spring, check that the cross-rail screws are tight and the gate is aligned to prevent warping.
WoodUp tip
Before you buy: the gate comes in one parcel with its screws, but hinges and a latch must be purchased separately according to the desired opening direction. Untreated Douglas fir can be installed as it is and oiled once a year; pine needs a water-repellent treatment before installation, not afterwards, as some parts of the frame become difficult to access once assembled. Check that the frame is square before permanently fixing the hinges to prevent the gate from rubbing or failing to close properly.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need posts to install this gate?
Yes. The gate attaches to two load-bearing posts (not supplied), securely anchored in the ground or to an existing wall. For installation on wooden posts, choose a minimum cross-section of 9x9 cm, anchored to a depth of 60 cm.
What hardware do I need for this gate?
You will need 2 adjustable hinges (minimum 80 kg capacity), 1 latch or keyed lock, depending on how the gate will be used, and a pull handle. Choose stainless-steel or galvanised-steel hardware for outdoor use.
Can this gate open in both directions?
No, unless you use double-action hinges. With standard hinges, the gate opens in only one direction. Decide which way you want it to open when installing it.
Are the supplied screws stainless steel?
The supplied screws are stainless steel, ensuring the outdoor assembly lasts without the risk of corrosion.
Can this gate be motorised?
A 100 cm gate can technically be motorised with a suitable electric actuator. The gate leaf’s weight (12–15 kg) is within the range of most standard gate motors. Consult a specialist installer.
