Installation tips
For a 150 cm fence: plan 3 rails (bottom at 10 cm, middle at 70 cm, top at 140 cm). Pre-drill each board 2 cm from the edge to prevent splitting. Use 4x50 mm stainless steel screws for long-lasting fixings. Apply treatment to all faces before installation, paying particular attention to end grain.
Spacing between boards: a solid gate acts like a sail in the wind, placing significant strain on the hinges and posts. A gap of 15 to 20 mm between boards significantly reduces mechanical stress — recommended for wide gates and windy locations. A gap of 10 mm gives a near-solid appearance. Beyond 25 mm, the slatted effect allows light and sight through.
Maintenance and protection
Renew the wood stain or exterior oil every 2 to 3 years. Inspect the bottom 10 centimetres of the boards — the area most exposed to water and soil splashes. Douglas fir resists without treatment, but annual maintenance will multiply its lifespan.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the 150 cm and 175 cm boards?
The only difference is the length (25 cm more for the 175 cm). The 150 cm is suited to fences and gates of standard height. The 175 cm is intended for gates requiring greater height or more complete screening.
Can these boards be used horizontally in a fence?
Yes. Boards of 150 cm installed horizontally create a contemporary look known as "horizontal palisade". In this case, plan vertical posts every 120 cm to keep the boards straight.
Can these boards be cut to a shorter length?
Yes. Solid wood cuts easily. Treat fresh cuts immediately with an end-grain sealer to prevent moisture absorption.
Is there a complete gate kit available for this board length?
No. For this length, you need to assemble the gate yourself using these boards, 91x21 mm rails and a diagonal brace. Woodup kit gates are supplied at a maximum height of 120 cm.
How many boards are needed to build a 5-metre fence at 150 cm height?
In 91x21 mm section board to board: approximately 11 boards per linear metre, i.e. 55 boards for 5 metres. With a 5 mm gap, plan for approximately 50 boards.
