Made-to-measure wooden staircase with a quarter-turn at the bottom
This staircase with a quarter-turn at the bottom is made to your measurements in fir, glued laminated beech or glued laminated oak. It turns 90° over its first steps, then rises in a straight line to the upper floor.
Choose whether the staircase turns left or right as you go up, then enter the finished-floor-to-finished-floor height, floor footprint, width and stairwell opening dimensions. Complete the configuration with the tread and stringer thickness (30 or 40 mm), stringers, risers, handrail and finish; the price is calculated as you go.
After you order, WoodUp sends you a construction plan and a 3D view for approval. Manufacturing only begins once you have agreed, and the staircase is delivered 8 to 10 weeks later, as a kit or pre-assembled.

Quarter-turn at the bottom, top or middle?
A staircase with a quarter-turn at the bottom places the turn at its base. It suits layouts where the staircase needs to start along a wall perpendicular to the stairwell opening, or where a passage needs to be kept clear in front of the first steps. If the turn needs to be at the upper floor, choose a quarter-turn at the top; for a turn partway up, choose a quarter-turn in the middle.
The direction is determined as you go up: a left-turning staircase with a quarter-turn at the bottom turns to your left over the first steps. Carefully measure the finished-floor-to-finished-floor height, including floor coverings, and the available floor footprint.
For the finish, unfinished leaves you free to apply protective varnish or paint it yourself, while natural varnish, white limed or grey finishes provide a staircase that is already protected.
Installation advice
Taking measurements: use the WoodUp measurement sheet. Measure the finished-floor-to-finished-floor height, including floor coverings downstairs and upstairs, the available floor footprint, the width, the stairwell opening dimensions and the floor slab thickness. Check the direction of the turn while standing at the bottom of the staircase. If in doubt, attach the sheet, plans or photos at the final step of the configurator.
Delivery: the staircase delivered as a kit is assembled on site following the construction plan. The pre-assembled version reduces work on site but requires sufficient access to bring the sections into the house.
Installation: secure the staircase according to the approved plan, checking that the stringers are plumb and the treads are level. Allow at least two people for assembly.
Care and protection
An unfinished staircase must be protected before use: two to three coats of protective stair varnish withstand foot traffic and abrasion. Varnished or stained finishes can be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth, without abrasive products.
Frequently asked questions
What is a staircase with a quarter-turn at the bottom?
This staircase turns 90° over its first steps, then rises in a straight line to the upper floor. Unlike a staircase with a quarter-turn at the top, which turns on arrival, or one with a quarter-turn in the middle, it turns at the start.
How can I tell whether my quarter-turn staircase turns left or right?
The direction is determined as you go up. A left-turning staircase with a quarter-turn at the bottom turns to your left from the start; a right-turning one turns to your right. The choice depends on the position of the wall and the stairwell opening.
What measurements are needed for a made-to-measure quarter-turn staircase?
You will need the finished-floor-to-finished-floor height, including floor coverings, the available floor footprint, the desired width, the stairwell opening dimensions and the floor slab thickness. The WoodUp measurement sheet shows where to take each measurement.
How is the price of a made-to-measure staircase with a quarter-turn at the bottom calculated?
The configurator calculates the price from your measurements and options: wood species, tread and stringer thickness, stringer type, risers, handrail, upper-floor balustrade, finish and delivery as a kit or pre-assembled. The price updates with each choice, before you order.
Which wood should you choose for a made-to-measure staircase?
Fir is the lightest and most economical option, often chosen for painting. Glued laminated beech is harder, with a subtle grain. Glued laminated oak has the most pronounced grain and suits natural varnished finishes.
How long does it take to receive a made-to-measure staircase?
Allow 8 to 10 weeks after approval of the plans. Once you have ordered, WoodUp reviews the project, then sends you a construction plan and a 3D view to approve and sign. Manufacturing then begins, and delivery is arranged by appointment.
