Fir structural timber per m³, cut to your dimensions

This structural timber made from fir from the Massif Central is sold by the cubic metre and cut to your project dimensions. Enter the length, up to 500 cm, and the width and thickness, each up to 23 cm, then choose a sawn or planed finish. The timber is supplied untreated.

The configurator calculates the price from the dimensions entered, with no need for a prior quote. This option suits the construction or renovation of a roof, a timber frame, a shelter or any project requiring non-standard cross-sections.

Fir is a lightweight, easy-to-work timber suited to structures protected by a roof covering. For pieces exposed to rain, naturally more durable Douglas fir is preferable.

Choosing the right structural timber

First prepare your cutting list: record the cross-section, length and quantity for each type of piece. Use it to calculate the total volume and place your order through the configurator.

Then choose the wood species to suit its exposure. Fir is suitable for a structure protected by a roof covering. For a structure exposed to the weather, or for cross-sections and lengths exceeding 23 cm and 500 cm, Douglas fir structural timber per m³ is available by quotation.

The sizing of structural timber, including cross-sections and spans, depends on snow loads, wind loads and the roof covering. Have it checked by a carpenter or structural engineer before ordering.

Installation advice

Storage: on delivery, store the timber flat, dry and off the ground on regularly spaced supports, with battens between layers to allow air to circulate.

Installation: allow the timber to acclimatise to site conditions before fitting. Pre-drill screw joints near the ends to prevent splitting.

Protection: the fir is supplied untreated. Before installation, apply an insecticide and fungicide treatment suited to the structure’s use class, particularly in areas affected by termites. Treat cuts made on site too.

Care and protection

Roof timbers beneath a roof covering need no routine maintenance. Check periodically for leaks, signs of damp or insects, especially at supports and near walls.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate structural timber volume in m³?

Multiply the length, width and thickness of each piece in metres, then multiply by the number of pieces. A 5 m beam with a 20 x 20 cm cross-section has a volume of 5 x 0.20 x 0.20, or 0.2 m³: five identical beams make 1 m³. The configurator calculates this for you from the dimensions entered.

How is the price per m³ of fir structural timber calculated?

The price depends on the volume ordered and the finish. Enter the length, width and thickness of your pieces in the configurator, then choose a sawn or planed finish: the price is shown before you order.

What structural timber cross-sections can you order?

All cross-sections up to 23 x 23 cm, in lengths up to 500 cm: rafters, purlins, joists, posts or structural battens. For longer pieces or larger cross-sections, Douglas fir structural timber is available by quotation.

Is the structural timber treated?

No, the fir is supplied untreated, either sawn or planed. Before installation, apply an insecticide and fungicide treatment suited to its intended use, and treat any cuts made on site.

Fir or Douglas fir for structural timber?

Fir is lightweight, easy to work with and economical: it suits roof timbers protected from rain by a roof covering. Douglas fir is naturally more durable, in use class 3, and is the choice for pieces exposed to the weather, such as a canopy, pergola or open carport.

Sawn or planed: which should you choose?

Sawn timber retains a rough surface and sawn dimensions: it suits pieces concealed within the roof. Planed timber has smooth faces and clean edges, for visible pieces, exposed roof timbers or decorative structures.
