Straight Oak Glulam Staircase – Complete Kit with Wooden Spindle Handrail

This straight oak glulam staircase is delivered as a kit with a wooden spindle handrail included. The total width with handrail is 85 cm (80 cm without handrail). The floor-to-floor height is 280 cm for 14 steps, with a footprint of 259 cm. The steps have a section of 210×30 mm, a going of 19 cm and a rise of 20 cm. This model belongs to the Standard range.

This kit includes the wooden spindle handrail: no additional order is required to secure the ascent. This is the fitted version of the FONTBRUNO oak staircase, with which it shares all structural dimensions. The oak glulam is delivered unfinished; a protective finish is mandatory before first use. Available with or without risers.

Installation advice

Preparation: The stairwell opening must allow a width of at least 85 cm, including the handrail. Check the 259 cm footprint in the direction of ascent before unpacking. Two people are required to handle the components.

Handrail: The spindles and handrail are assembled according to the plan provided. The handrail must be fitted during staircase assembly. Check the plumb of the newel posts before final tightening.

Screws: Always pre-drill oak before any screw fixing.

Finish: Apply the protective treatment preferably before installation to treat hidden faces. Allow 2 to 3 coats of floor sealer for lasting wear resistance.

Maintenance and protection

The oak glulam is delivered unfinished. Apply a protective finish before first use.

Aqua-polyurethane staircase floor sealer: 2 to 3 coats, renewed every 5 to 7 years
Oil-wax: natural matt finish, annual renewal
Polyurethane varnish: high gloss, impact resistance

Routine cleaning: lightly damp cloth, pH-neutral product. Recommended humidity: 45 to 65%.

What is the difference between FONTBRUNO oak (without handrail) and FONTBRUNO + wooden spindle handrail?

Both models share exactly the same structural dimensions (section 210×30 mm, footprint 259 cm, height 280 cm, 14 steps, going 19 cm). The difference relates solely to the handrail: the version without handrail requires a handrail ordered and fitted separately; this version includes the wooden spindle handrail in the kit. The total width increases from 80 cm to 85 cm with the handrail.

Can the spindle handrail be fitted on the left and on the right?

Assembly is possible on the right or left when going up.

What finish should be applied to the wooden spindles?

The same finish as the steps can be applied to the entire handrail for visual consistency. For the handrail itself, which is subject to frequent hand contact, a satin floor sealer in 2 coats is recommended.

Does the 259 cm footprint correspond to the projected length on the floor?

Yes, the footprint refers to the length required in the room in the direction of ascent. A dimensioned drawing is available to download on the product page for verification before ordering.

Why is oak glulam preferable to solid oak for a staircase?

Glulam offers superior dimensional stability: the laminations are glued in alternating directions, which compensates for movement caused by seasonal humidity variations and reduces the risk of long-term deformation.

Is the pitch of this staircase comfortable?

The comfort of a staircase is calculated using the Blondel formula:
2 rises + 1 going = approximately 63 cm.

For this staircase:
2 × 20 cm + 19 cm = 59 cm.

The staircase is therefore slightly steeper than a traditional staircase, which is common for a compact straight staircase designed to minimise the floor footprint. It remains suitable for standard indoor use.
