FONTBRUNO Straight Laminated Oak Staircase – Complete Kit with Wooden-Spindle Balustrade

This laminated oak straight staircase comes as a kit with a wooden-spindle balustrade included. Its overall width with the balustrade is 85 cm (80 cm without). The floor-to-floor height is 280 cm across 14 treads, with a 259 cm floor footprint. The treads measure 210x30 mm in section, with a 19 cm going and a 20 cm rise. This model belongs to the Standard range.

This kit includes the wooden-spindle balustrade: no additional order is needed to provide a handhold on the stairs. It is the balustrade-equipped version of the FONTBRUNO oak staircase and shares all its structural dimensions. The laminated oak is supplied unfinished – a protective finish must be applied before first use.

Installation advice

Preparation: check the floor-to-floor height and stairwell opening before unpacking. The 259 cm footprint must fit the space in the direction of ascent. The opening must allow a width of at least 85 cm including the balustrade. Have two people available for handling – laminated oak is dense.

Screws: always pre-drill oak before fixing it with screws. Oak can split if screws are inserted without pilot holes.

Balustrade: assemble the spindles and handrail according to the supplied plan. The balustrade can be fitted on the right or left as you go up the stairs. Check that the posts are plumb before final tightening.

Finish: ideally, apply the protective finish before installation to treat concealed surfaces. For oak, allow 2–3 coats of stair varnish.

Care and protection

Unfinished oak must be protected before first use. Without protection, marks quickly become embedded in the oak grain. As the handrail is touched frequently, two coats of satin stair varnish provide maximum protection. Options:

Before you buy: allow for the 85 cm overall width, including the balustrade, when measuring the stairwell opening. The opening must be at least 85–87 cm wide to provide installation clearance. Check this against the finished dimensions before ordering.

The only difference is the balustrade: this version includes the wooden-spindle balustrade in the kit and has an overall width of 85 cm; the version without a balustrade requires one to be ordered separately and fitted during assembly.

The handrail is subject to more wear from contact, so it benefits from an extra coat of finish compared with the treads.

How many people are needed to install this staircase?

At least two people are needed to handle the oak stringers, which are heavy and long. One person can then assemble the balustrade. Allow half a day to a full day for assembly, depending on experience and the site layout.

Can this balustrade be installed on a staircase other than the FONTBRUNO?
