MORENO Straight Fir Staircase - Cuttable Kit 285 cm, 15 Treads

The straight MORENO staircase in solid fir is delivered as a kit for on-site assembly, with a maximum floor-to-floor height of 285 cm and 15 treads (including a flush landing tread). Its cuttable design allows the height to be adapted to the actual site configuration, within the limit indicated in the instructions. The width without handrail is 80 cm (82 cm with handrail), for a recommended stairwell of 85x273 cm. Tread height: 19 cm. Going: 18.3 cm. Tread section: 200x28 mm with risers, 220x28 mm without riser.

The fir is supplied untreated: a protective finish suitable for interior use must be applied after installation. The model is available with or without risers and with or without a handrail, depending on the version ordered. The anchor fixings are not supplied and must be chosen according to the substrate (concrete, wood, etc.). The floor footprint of 273 cm must be verified before ordering, taking into account finished floor coverings and ceiling finishes.

Installation advice

Checking dimensions: verify the floor-to-floor height (maximum 285 cm) and the available stairwell (85x273 cm recommended) before unpacking the kit. These measurements must be taken on finished floor and ceiling surfaces, including finishes.

Cutting: if the floor-to-floor height is less than 285 cm, cut the stringers from the bottom according to the cutting chart provided. Cutting modifies the height of the first tread. Always check the result before final assembly.

Assembly: assemble the stringers, treads and risers according to the instructions provided, then fix securely to the floor and the upper support. A minimum of two people are required to handle the stringers.

Anchoring: fix the stringers to the floor and the upper support with fixings appropriate to the material (concrete, wood, etc.). Fixings are not supplied — allow for suitable wall plugs for the substrate.

Handrail: the handrail can be fitted after assembly of the staircase. It is reversible — can be fitted on the right or left side going up, depending on your configuration.

Maintenance and protection

The raw fir delivered must imperatively receive a protective finish before first use to limit wear marks and facilitate maintenance. Recommended options:

  • Aqua-polyurethane staircase varnish: 2 to 3 coats, maximum resistance, renewal every 5 to 7 years
  • Oil-wax: natural matt finish, maintenance every 1 to 2 years
  • Interior paint: colour customisation, minimum 2 coats

Routine cleaning: slightly damp cloth, pH-neutral product. Avoid standing water on the treads. Check that fixings are tight once a year.

WoodUp tip

Before cutting the stringers, always check the floor-to-floor height on finished floor and ceiling — including floor covering, parquet, tiling, and suspended ceiling. An error of a few centimetres when taking measurements can make the staircase impossible to cut down once the stringers are too short.

Important before purchasing: the spindle handrail can be added after assembly of the staircase — reversible right or left hand. You can therefore order the staircase without a handrail and add it later if required.

Frequently asked questions

How do I cut the MORENO staircase to my floor-to-floor height?

The cut is made on the stringers from the bottom, according to the cutting chart provided in the instructions. Each centimetre removed changes the height of the first tread. For a floor-to-floor height of 270 cm for example, the cut is approximately 15 cm per stringer. Use a guided circular saw and work on both stringers simultaneously to ensure a perfect level.

What is the difference between the version with and without risers?

With risers, the staircase is closed: the vertical faces between the treads are clad, the structure is visually more solid and allows less dust through. Without risers, the staircase is open, visually lighter and allowing light to pass through. Both versions use the same stringer; only the tread section changes (200x28 mm with / 220x28 mm without).

Is the 85x273 cm stairwell a minimum or a recommended dimension?

This is a recommended dimension for comfortable assembly with installation tolerances. The strict minimum dimension is the staircase footprint (273 cm) + width (80 cm). In practice, allowing 5 extra cm in width and 2 cm in length makes it possible to adjust the plumb without constraint.

Which staircase should I choose for a mezzanine with a floor-to-floor height of 260 cm?

The MORENO is suitable: it can be cut down to 260 cm without difficulty (a cut of approximately 25 cm on the stringers). For heights below 240 cm, the loft staircases AULAC or BASSEYRE, which are more compact, may be better suited depending on the available floor space.

Should the fir be treated before or after installation?

The finish is applied after complete installation, once the staircase is fixed in place. If a handrail is planned, it can be fitted before or after the finish depending on your workflow. Treating before installation risks fouling the assembly areas and preventing adjustments. However, hidden surfaces (undersides of treads, inner faces of stringers) can be treated before assembly for complete protection.

Why choose the MORENO rather than a quarter-turn staircase?

The straight MORENO staircase is suitable when the stairwell is rectangular and aligned along the length of the staircase, with no change of direction. Installation is simpler and the price more accessible. A quarter-turn staircase is necessary when the floor space does not allow the full footprint (273 cm) to be aligned in a straight line, or when the layout of the room requires a change of direction.

Installation advice

Check compatibility with your MORENO or SUCHET staircase before ordering. Start by fixing the bottom newel post (at the bottom) and top newel post (at the top) into the steps or floor according to the instructions. Then position the bottom rail and distribute the 17 balusters evenly between the newel posts. Finish with the handrail.

Apply the chosen finish before final fixing to also treat the embedded parts. The handrail requires an abrasion-resistant finish (varnish 2 coats recommended).

Maintenance and protection

The wood is delivered raw and untreated. Apply a protective finish before intensive use - satin varnish (2 coats), oil-wax or polyurethane varnish depending on the desired appearance. The handrail, subject to frequent contact, particularly benefits from an abrasion-resistant varnish.

Annual maintenance with a product suited to the chosen finish is sufficient to preserve the appearance of the wood. Avoid abrasive products or solvent-based cleaners that degrade finishes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the PENDEDIS balustrade and the MONTJARDIN handrail?

The PENDEDIS is a complete balustrade with precise dimensions (handrail 3900 mm, 17 balusters, bottom rail, 2 newel posts) designed for MORENO and SUCHET staircases. The MONTJARDIN is a cuttable-to-size handrail designed for the FAGEOLE staircase. The PENDEDIS is simpler to install as it is already dimensioned for its staircase; the MONTJARDIN is more flexible but requires adaptation.

Is the PENDEDIS kit compatible with the MORENO staircase in fir and in beech?

The PENDEDIS is compatible with both versions of the MORENO staircase (fir and beech) and SUCHET, which share the same structural dimensions. The timber species of the balustrade may differ from that of the staircase - choose according to the desired aesthetic and apply the same finish for visual harmony.

Do the 17 balusters of the PENDEDIS comply with the safety standard (passage of an 11 cm sphere)?

The spacing between the balusters must be less than 11 cm to prevent the passage of an 11 cm sphere (standard NF P01-012). With 17 balusters over 3900 mm, check the actual positioning according to your staircase. If the MORENO/SUCHET staircase has a different stairwell opening, adjust the spacing accordingly before final fixing.

Can the PENDEDIS be installed on both sides of the MORENO staircase?

The MORENO staircase is a straight staircase with a handrail on one side in its standard configuration. If you want a handrail on both sides (double handrail configuration), order two PENDEDIS kits and adapt the wall fixing for the side without a newel post.

How long does it take to install the PENDEDIS balustrade?

An experienced DIY enthusiast can install the PENDEDIS in 2 to 4 hours (excluding finishing). You will need a drill, wood and metal drill bits, a spirit level, a mitre saw for angle cuts, and fixings suited to your steps. The finish (varnish or paint) requires additional drying time between coats.
