SELA Bottom Quarter-Turn Staircase - Comfort Range, 288 cm, Step Height 18 cm, Going 22 cm

The SELA staircase is a bottom quarter-turn staircase from the Comfort range, available in beech, oak, or laminated fir. Its bottom quarter-turn configuration places the change of direction at 90° at the bottom of the flight, with a step height of 18 cm and a going of 22 cm — the optimal Blondel formula for comfortable everyday use. The staircase is designed for a floor-to-floor height of 288 cm with 15 steps and a footprint of 351 cm.

The recommended stairwell opening is 82x351 cm. The tread section is 210x30 mm. The SELA is the bottom quarter-turn version of the Comfort range — it offers the same climbing comfort as the straight GAVIA, in a configuration that allows a change of direction at the top. Available with or without risers, in right or left direction.

Key points

  • Comfort range: step height 18 cm / going 22 cm — gentle climb, foot fully placed on each step
  • Bottom quarter-turn: change of direction at the bottom — space under the staircase can be used, steps offset laterally
  • Three timber species: fir, beech, or oak laminated depending on budget and aesthetics
  • Footprint 351 cm: longer than a Standard quarter-turn — check available space before ordering
  • Non-reversible direction: right or left — to be determined before ordering
  • Handrail can be added after assembly: fixings supplied

Installation advice

Check the footprint (351 cm) and stairwell opening (82x351 cm) before ordering. Determine the direction (right or left) — a definitive choice. The handrail can be fitted after the staircase is assembled. Always pre-drill on beech and oak. Minimum two people for handling. Apply the finish after complete installation.

Maintenance and protection

Apply 2–3 coats of varnish (beech, oak) or an oil-wax (fir) before first use. The Comfort range is often chosen for its long-term comfort — regular maintenance will preserve the quality of the wood over time. Renewal every 5–7 years. Cleaning: damp cloth, neutral pH.

WoodUp Advice

The SELA is the Comfort range bottom quarter-turn with the largest footprint (351 cm). For rooms where 351 linear cm are not available but where the stairwell requires a bottom quarter-turn, the FURKA (footprint 346 cm) or the CUVILLAT (footprint 246 cm but going 16 cm) may be alternatives. The choice between SELA and FURKA is based on the floor-to-floor height: SELA for 288 cm, FURKA also for 288 cm but with slightly different dimensions.

Important before purchasing: the direction (right or left) is definitive at the time of order. For a bottom quarter-turn, stand at the foot of the staircase — the direction corresponds to the side towards which you turn when reaching the top. The stairwell opening of 82x351 cm is significantly long — check on finished floor and ceiling before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the SELA bottom quarter-turn and the MOLEDE bottom quarter-turn?

The MOLEDE is a Standard range bottom quarter-turn (step height 20 cm / going 19 cm), footprint 282 cm, stairwell opening 282x82 cm without handrail. The SELA is a Comfort range bottom quarter-turn (step height 18 cm / going 22 cm), footprint 351 cm, stairwell opening 82x351 cm. The SELA is more comfortable but requires 69 cm more footprint. The MOLEDE is suitable when space is limited; the SELA when climbing comfort is the priority.

What is the difference between the SELA and the FURKA in the Comfort range?

The SELA and the FURKA are both Comfort range bottom quarter-turns (step height 18 cm / going 22 cm / 288 cm). The main difference lies in the footprint (SELA 351 cm / FURKA 346 cm) and the available timber species. Consult the detailed product pages or customer service to choose the most suitable model for your configuration.

Why does the Comfort range require a larger footprint?

A larger going (22 cm vs 19 cm) means each tread is deeper. For the same number of steps and the same height, the total footprint increases proportionally: 15 steps x 22 cm = 330 cm (+ landing) vs 15 steps x 19 cm = 285 cm. This is the unavoidable physical principle — comfort comes at the cost of footprint.

Can the SELA be trimmed for a height of 270 cm?

Yes, within the limits indicated in the instructions. For 270 cm, it is possible to remove one step (remaining height 18 cm x 15 = 270 cm, i.e. no trimming required) or to trim the stringers slightly for fine adjustment. Check the floor-to-floor height on finished floor and ceiling before any work.

Is the SELA suitable as a main staircase for a home with young children?

Yes — in fact that is its primary purpose. The going of 22 cm and the step height of 18 cm meet the recommendations for family use with children. The deeper tread allows children to place their foot fully, and the reduced height limits the effort when climbing. Pair the staircase with a sturdy handrail for optimal safety.

Which timber species should I choose for the SELA?

For a main staircase with heavy traffic, laminated oak offers maximum durability. Laminated beech is the balanced choice (good resistance, discreet grain). Fir is the economical option — suitable for moderate use with a careful finish. As the Comfort range is a main staircase, beech or oak are generally recommended over fir.

Key points

  • 3 available wood species: oak, beech or laminated fir depending on budget and aesthetics
  • Traditional spindle design: classic aesthetic suited to all interiors
  • Compatible with SELA: designed and sized for this staircase
  • Bottom quarter-turn configuration: left or right depending on your installation
  • Raw wood: customisable with paint, varnish or wood stain

Installation advice

Install this handrail simultaneously with the SELA staircase for a consistent result. First fix the starting and ending newel posts, then the bottom rail, the spindles and finally the handrail. Check the final height of 90 cm (vertical measurement from the nosing).

Apply the finish to all elements before final fixing. The handrail requires an abrasion-resistant finish (2-coat varnish recommended). The spacing between spindles must be less than 11 cm (standard NF P01-012).

Maintenance and protection

The wood is delivered raw and untreated. Apply a protective finish before intensive use - satin varnish (2 coats), oil-wax or polyurethane lacquer depending on the desired look. The handrail, subject to frequent contact, particularly benefits from an abrasion-resistant varnish.

Annual maintenance with a product suited to the chosen finish is sufficient to preserve the appearance of the wood. Avoid abrasive products or solvent-based cleaners that damage finishes.

Frequently asked questions

Which wood species should I choose between fir, beech and oak for this handrail?

Fir is the economical option, softer but sufficient for an indoor handrail with a protective finish. Beech is the traditional wood species for handrails: harder, abrasion-resistant, with a fine and regular grain. Oak is the premium choice: maximum lifespan, noble appearance, but higher price. For standard family use, beech offers the best quality/durability/price ratio.

Is this handrail compatible with staircases other than the SELA?

The handrail is sized for the WoodUp SELA staircase. Adaptation to other staircases of similar configuration (bottom quarter-turn) is possible by checking dimensional compatibility. Contact WoodUp with the precise measurements of your stairwell and staircase before ordering.

Can I choose a different wood species from that of the staircase?

Yes, there is no obligation to match the wood species of the staircase and the handrail. Some owners choose oak for the handrail on a fir staircase for greater durability on the handrail, or for a contrasting aesthetic effect. Apply the same colour finish for visual harmony.

Is the handrail delivered assembled or as a kit?

The handrail is delivered as a kit to be assembled according to WoodUp instructions. Assembly requires a drill, wood drill bits, a spirit level and a mallet or hammer. Installation is accessible to a DIYer with basic experience. Allow 2 to 4 hours for installation depending on the configuration.

What safety standard applies to an indoor staircase handrail?

In France, standard NF P01-012 applies to balustrades. For a private indoor staircase, the minimum height is 90 cm from the nosing. The spacing between spindles must prevent the passage of an 11 cm sphere. These requirements are the regulatory minimums for new constructions.
