Helical staircase: decoration and space saving
The steel, wood, or wood-metal helical staircase enhances the decoration of a loft with its elegant curves. No other interior staircase has as much style, whatever the model. Helical staircases bring a contemporary, retro, or Art Deco design to your home depending on the model. Wooden treads, lacquered steel stringer — the helical staircase has a reduced floor footprint.
Helical staircase: when aesthetics come first
Depending on the location (loft, flat, house), you choose the direction of rotation of the helical staircase. One of the advantages of the spiral staircase is that it takes up less space than a straight staircase or a quarter-turn staircase while remaining elegant. The spiral staircase is architects' preferred option for contemporary interior design. A stylish layout solution, the Woodup helical staircase guarantees a high level of finish.
A reduced floor footprint? Think helical staircase
The helical staircase has the smallest floor footprint of all interior staircases. The spiral staircase is the only option when the ceiling height is high and the space is limited. Available as a space-saving model, the helical staircase is suited to contemporary living:
- duplex flat;
- town house lacking space;
- mezzanine access.
Depending on the model, the Woodup spiral staircase is available in heights from 266 to 320 cm and even more as a bespoke option.
The Woodup helical staircase: self-supporting steel structure
The wooden staircase in helical form, all-metal, or wood-metal has a self-supporting structure. Woodup produces helical staircases designed to provide a maximum level of safety. Metal or wooden safety handrail, glued laminated wood treads 20 to 30 mm thick, wood-metal treads — you access the upper floor of the house via a stable spiral staircase.
Helical staircase: central stringer and balanced structure
The inner end of the treads forms the central stringer of a helical staircase. A threaded rod fixed to the floor ensures the stability of the structure. Each of our staircases guarantees balance and safety, whatever the diameter of the staircase:
- helical staircase Ø 120 cm;
- helical staircase Ø 140 cm;
- helical staircase Ø 150 cm
- helical staircase Ø 160 cm;
- helical staircase Ø 168 cm.
Woodup offers helical staircases with diameters of 144 and 169 cm.
Compliance with standards and safety
More than other staircases, the spiral staircase must comply with standards. This is a guarantee of ergonomics and safety. All our models meet the dimensional requirements. These include in particular the tread depth, the riser height, and the height of the balustrades.
For greater comfort, you can personalise the staircase. We advise you, if the configuration allows, to choose a diameter greater than 120 cm, to make it easier to move furniture to the upper floor. Our models accept maximum loads of up to 200 kg/m².
Installing a helical staircase: nothing could be simpler
Installing a retro helical staircase, Art Deco, classic, or designer is extremely simple. Take the opportunity to reduce the cost of the renovation quote, with a staircase that can be fitted anywhere in the home: in the middle of a room, against a wall, in a corner.
Each model strictly complies with the safety standards that every helical staircase must meet. The Woodup spiral staircase, in kit form or pre-assembled, is adjustable (in height) and fitted with a trimmable landing tread.
Helical staircases: height-adjustable treads
The helical staircase offers the possibility of height adjustment. This option provides real installation flexibility for the staircase:
- treads adjustable in height step by step between 20.5 and 23.5 cm depending on the type of staircase;
- total number of adjustable treads: from 10 to 16 treads depending on the floor height.
Note the option of adding or removing treads to adjust the height of the staircase and the existence of stringer spacers.
Trimmable landing treads: the adaptable helical staircase
Opt for the wood-metal staircase model, with a wooden handrail and a square landing tread that can be cut to size. Go for the angled wood-metal bi-material staircase, with a trapezoidal landing tread.
Choose the glued laminated wood helical staircase option, with triangular treads and a trapezoidal landing tread that can be cut to size. Only the all-metal staircase features a triangular landing tread that cannot be cut to size.
Assembly precautions
All our spiral staircases are designed for assembly without a tradesperson. A competent DIY enthusiast can take on the project. The treads, central stringer, and handrail can be adjusted without any modifications.
However, before you start, take stock. Double-check your measurements and dimensions. Fixing the central stringer is the first operation. Make sure there are no pipes (electrical, water) before drilling.
Maintenance and upkeep
Woodup has been offering robust staircases since 2015. More than 2,500 customers have trusted us. You are investing in a durable staircase with an excellent quality-to-price ratio. Our products, 100% artisan-made, are designed to accompany you throughout your life.
To extend their durability, protect the wooden treads before first use. Use a hard oil, a varnish, or a wood sealer. Carry out weekly maintenance with non-aggressive household products. Dust the treads as often as possible.
The finish of your Woodup artisan helical staircase
The choice of finish from our range of helical staircases allows you to harmonise the staircase design with the style of your interior:
- glued laminated wood treads in beech, oak, or fir;
- curved treads or triangular treads;
- treads on white or grey epoxy metal structure;
- metal handrail, polyethylene or wood;
- balustrade, metal, wood, or polyethylene;
- rail balustrade, cable, tube;
- black lacquered metal stringer, white, grey epoxy, wood effect.
Choosing your helical staircase wisely
Choosing a staircase is a simple operation, which nevertheless requires a little thought and some knowledge. How should you go about it? To help you, Woodup offers a method used by our experts. It consists of four steps.
1 - Measure the stairwell opening carefully
Before placing any order, take your measurements. The staircase must be suited to the stairwell opening. This means it must "fit" within the stairwell. In detail, its diameter must be as close as possible to the size of the stairwell. However, a round helical staircase can be installed in a square stairwell. We do, however, offer a special square stairwell model.
2 - Think about safety
Our staircases are safe. Designed in strict compliance with staircase standards, they guarantee safe use. If the staircase is used by children, consider the type of balustrade and handrail. Opt for closely spaced balusters. Wooden treads can be coated with an anti-slip varnish to enhance safety.
3 - Estimate the frequency of use
There are two main categories of staircases. The first covers main staircases, used every day. The second covers secondary staircases, used occasionally. Is your staircase a main one? Choose a minimum diameter of 140 cm. To access a mezzanine, a space-saving helical staircase is suitable.
4 - Match or contrast with your décor
A staircase is as much a piece of furniture as a means of access to the upper floor. It occupies space. Pay attention to its appearance. Often, the choice falls on a staircase that harmonises with the décor. The contemporary wood-metal style is very popular. But you can choose contrast instead. An all-metal staircase in a traditional interior can elegantly enhance the design.
