What is a traditional-style balustrade?

A traditional balustrade is generally composed of homogeneous and similar materials. Discover on Woodup all-wood balustrades (posts, balusters, handrail) and all-metal (steel or aluminium). Sometimes, the balustrade combines wood and metal. The classic balustrade, like its contemporary balustrade counterpart, is a safety fitting. It can be fixed to a terrace, a balcony, a mezzanine, or in line with a staircase.

Choosing an interior/exterior balustrade for your home

Is your priority to buy a balustrade that enhances your décor? Every Woodup creation draws on decorating ideas from customer feedback. But be careful — to avoid regretting your purchase, take your measurements carefully. This attention will make your fixing work easier and improve the safety of your balcony or terrace.

Choosing your railing to match your decorating ideas

Opt for products with an inimitable and refined style. A good staircase, balcony or mezzanine railing enhances the décor without overloading it. Your classic balustrade will be all wood in a traditional interior. Does your staircase combine wood and steel? Opt for a mezzanine balustrade in wood with a PVC handrail.

Buying a balustrade: dimensions and safety

Follow the advice of our customers who have purchased a kit balustrade. Be meticulous when taking your measurements. You will avoid having to recut and improvise fixings to secure your elevated space. You will also enhance the design of the balustrade/staircase, balustrade/terrace or balustrade/mezzanine pairing.

Characteristics of home balustrades with a classic design

The characteristics of traditional balustrades are linked to four elements. First, the materials, which at Woodup include wood species, steel and aluminium. Then the style, which can be classic and traditional, or classic and modern. The colours, which emit different levels of brightness depending on the product. And finally the dimensions, which comply with standards and meet fixing and layout requirements.

Materials for traditional balustrades

Opt for traditional Woodup balustrades and forget wrought iron! Dare to choose the wood species that appeal to you. Douglas pine, oak or beech balustrades — we handle the manufacturing for you! We also offer mixed products with a classic design, in wood and metal (wooden handrail and aluminium tubes).

Style and design of the traditional balustrade

Select products that match your décor in every way. Choose a balustrade with square posts and rectangular balusters to keep a modern look. Is your interior more rustic? Stick with a balustrade with turned posts and worked balusters.

Colours and types of traditional balustrades

Match your balustrade to your staircase, your terrace décor or your balcony style! The all-beech balustrade brightens your space with its pink-white colour. Harmonise your oak or varnished fir furniture with a balustrade in a lovely golden hue. Go for contemporary classic with a grey epoxy steel balustrade and its black PVC handrail.

Does your terrace or mezzanine have particular dimensions? Order a custom-made balustrade! Do you have space on your balcony? Opt for balustrades in standard dimensions: 0.38, 0.75, 1 or 2 metres in length. All our balustrades have a minimum regulatory height of one metre.

Where should a traditional balustrade be installed?

The installation of a traditional balustrade is of course a matter of safety and standards, but also a confident aesthetic choice. Wooden elements that convey this traditional feel, without appearing too old or outdated, are particularly well suited to period or classically styled interiors.

In a character home

Older homes or those with an atypical architecture will undoubtedly be enhanced by a traditional-style balustrade. If the entrance to your courtyard features a large wrought iron gate, your visitors will no doubt expect to find inside the home a beautiful wooden staircase and a matching balustrade, with vertical balusters or panels.

In a gîte or cottage

Solid wood staircases and balustrades enhance the traditional character of a place, particularly country or mountain gîtes. Thanks to our traditional balustrades compliant with French safety standards, offer the tourists visiting your region the perfect balance between safety and aesthetics.

In a historic building

Our balustrades with turned wooden posts integrate beautifully into exceptional buildings such as manor houses, private mansions or châteaux. Preserve the authenticity of your historic building with our solid wood joinery. Choose a dark-tinted vitrified varnish to enhance the aged appearance of your staircase and its balustrade.

How do you fix a traditional balustrade?

A balustrade, whether traditional in solid wood, or designer in glass or stainless steel, must be fixed in a workmanlike manner to be compliant. Regardless of the type of floor covering (parquet, tiles, carpet or other). You will choose your balustrade fixing accessories according to the nature of the floor: concrete slab, wooden floor, brick wall, etc.

Floor-fixing a balustrade (French style)

A traditional French-style balustrade is fixed directly to the floor, or to a bottom rail itself fixed to the floor. On a concrete slab, it is necessary to plan for the installation of fixing plates on the posts and possibly the setting of certain parts. Setting a balustrade in concrete is the option that offers the greatest resistance. On a wooden floor such as a mezzanine, assemblies may be sufficient to fix a balustrade to a bottom rail.

Side-fixing a balustrade (English style)

A traditional English-style balustrade is supported on the side of a wall, a staircase stringer, a slab or a sufficiently thick floor. The result conveys a particularly contemporary and designer aesthetic. You will see very few traditional wooden balustrades with a side fixing. English-style fixing plates are more commonly found on contemporary aluminium or galvanised steel balustrade models, as well as on designer balustrades with tensioned stainless steel cables or perforated sheet metal.

FAQ: your questions, our answers

Here we provide answers to your frequently asked questions about our collection of traditional solid wood balustrades, to be installed on a window, terrace, mezzanine or staircase.

How do you choose the wood species for a traditional balustrade?

Our workshops offer solid wood balustrades made from several wood species, including oak, beech and fir. These three types of wood are distinguished by their characteristics (resistance, density), their aesthetics (colour) and their price. A traditional oak balustrade will be more expensive than a fir balustrade, but will be considered a more luxurious product that adds value to your interior.

How do you choose the finish for a wooden balustrade?

All our wooden balustrades are available with or without a finish. Opt for a raw wood balustrade if you wish to apply your own paint, varnish, wood stain or specific oil — matched, for example, to your existing staircase or windows. We offer several types of finish on our website: oils (light wood protection), varnishes (enhanced wood protection) and wood stains (suitable for exterior woodwork).

Can I install a traditional balustrade outdoors?

An all-wood balustrade is not recommended for outdoor installation, whether in fir, beech or oak. Certain models of aluminium balustrades with a round wooden handrail and possibly an intermediate wooden rail would be suitable. However, we advise against wooden panel balustrades or those with wooden posts. They would deteriorate too quickly when exposed to the elements. If you nevertheless opt for a traditional outdoor wooden balustrade, make sure to protect it with a suitable wood stain and maintain it regularly.

Can I buy a wooden balustrade with a custom height?

The height of a traditional balustrade is standard and compliant with French regulations. However, you can order custom-made balustrades from us, particularly to dress the top of a staircase, if you need smaller wooden posts that follow the slope of the handrail. We are also attentive to your projects for atypical balustrades or reproductions of a balustrade from an old staircase with specific decorations and patterns.
