Loft ladder

Loft ladder: access your loft safely

Are you looking for a loft ladder to access the loft? Staircase manufacturer bespoke or standard, in wood or wood-metal, Woodup helps you find an economical and reliable product.
Our loft ladders adapt to a ceiling height of 2.80 to 3.30 metres. Our various models are available in 10 to 12 steps. Of perfect finish at a very good value for money, discover our loft ladders that are easy to install.

Loft ladder: folding or telescopic version

The loft ladder is a folding or telescopic product that allows access to a house loft or a terrace. Woodup offers models available in several sizes and dimensions (height).
Thanks to its real steps, the loft ladder is much more comfortable to use than a ladder. The insulation of the loft ladder hatch prevents cold air from entering the house. On the floor, beneath the loft ladder hatch, the room is freely accessible.

Woodup loft ladder: a complete range

Woodup offers you a complete range of loft ladders. Our staircases are available with several levels of thermal insulation, in several box dimensions and in different materials (wood, aluminium, metal).
A loft ladder is the best solution for occasional access to your loft, your mezzanine or your attic. It is a folding staircase that allows for considerable space saving in the room.

Loft ladder: go up safely

The Woodup loft ladder complies with Standard EN 14975, the European standard that specifies the terms and definitions applicable to loft ladders. This standard imposes stringent requirements and test methods for the construction of these products. It makes the loft ladder a safe access solution at a significantly more attractive price than a traditional bespoke staircase.

The loft ladder: works and tools

The loft ladder in wood or wood/metal installs without major works or specific tools. The Woodup loft ladder is available in a standard version, but a wide choice of hatch dimensions allows you to find the staircase suited to your hatch opening. Note that the loft ladder fits easily into a small hatch opening. Box dimensions vary according to model:

  • width: 50 to 70 cm;

  • length: 70 to 140 cm.

You can fix your loft ladder between two beams of your loft floor without weakening your home.

The loft ladder: the different models

The choice of loft ladder is wide: folding ladders, sliding ladders, concertina ladders. The loft ladder folds back simply, easily and quickly. Wooden loft ladders come in three parts (3 folding sections).
Models with a stair handrail provide greater safety when accessing the loft. Anti-slip wooden treads are grooved and some models are fitted with plastic floor-protection end caps. Which loft ladder model will suit your home?

The concertina loft ladder

The telescopic staircase known as a concertina staircase is available with a wood or metal box. It is not a folding ladder, but a fully-fledged loft ladder, with real steps. The width of the staircase is 40 cm, the available models come in 10 or 12 steps. This loft ladder requires the installation of floor fixing brackets.

The retractable staircase in wood and metal

A wood and metal loft ladder has metal stringers and grooved wooden treads. Some of our wood/metal retractable products have a reduced floor footprint (100 cm) and a low staircase height when folded onto the hatch (47 cm). The hatches are available with standard insulation or super insulation (86 mm thickness).

The all-wood or all-metal loft ladder

The all-wood loft ladder is fitted with grooved wooden treads and wooden side stringers. The all-metal staircase has metal treads and metal stringers. The width of the staircase is standard (40 cm), the number of steps varies from 10 to 12 and the thickness of the insulation is, depending on the model, between 26 and 86 mm.

The aluminium loft ladder

Aluminium loft ladders are lighter and easier to handle. Available in 3 sections, these products have anti-slip pads under the feet of each stringer. The aluminium loft ladder can be cut to the desired height. The various box sizes (width 55 to 70, length 110 to 140 cm) make installation easier.

Large-height loft ladder

We also offer the large-height loft ladder. These various models allow installation under ceilings higher than 2.80 m. The telescopic loft ladder exists with ceiling heights of 2.90 to 3.30 metres (in the latter case, the staircase is foldable and has four segments).

The loft ladder in fire-resistant materials

Some boxes are made of fire-resistant metal, others of wood. We offer a range of 45-minute or 60-minute fire-resistant loft ladders with a double inflated seal system. The fire-resistant loft ladder helps delay the spread of fire in the loft and protects the rest of the house.

Selection guide for your loft ladder

You will find on the market a large number of loft ladders. The differences between models come down to specific points. But the perfect staircase is the one that meets your expectations point by point. It must also satisfy other criteria, presented below.

Criterion 1: frequency of use and load carrying

Are you looking for a staircase for occasional loft access? A standard wood or aluminium model is suitable. For frequent trips up to the loft with your arms full, opt for a more rigid metal model. On average, the load capacity of loft ladders ranges from 150 to 200 kg.

Criterion 2: ceiling height and possible cutting

Our loft ladders cover heights from 2.80 to 3.30 m. This corresponds to the standard to high ceiling height (most configurations). However, check the finished floor-to-floor height carefully. Our models can be cut down if the height is lower.

Criterion 3: hatch insulation and thermal comfort

Any passage between a heated space and an unheated space represents a thermal bridge. If this is the case, opt for an insulated box. Super-insulated versions (insulation up to 86 mm thick) limit heat loss.

Criterion 4: staircase material

The wooden staircase offers the pleasant aesthetic of a traditional ladder. It also provides good comfort underfoot. For lighter handling, aluminium is preferable. The staircase is more resistant to moisture. It is also more rigid and more reassuring.

Criterion 5: fire-resistance requirement

In certain cases, the hatch must meet fire-resistance requirements. This is the case for public buildings and professional premises. However, in a private house or an apartment with a loft, it is appreciated by insurers. We offer 45 or 60-minute fire-resistant models.

Preparation and marking

Check the flatness of the lower floor. Check the solidity of the upper floor. Ensure that the hatch opening is flat, sturdy, and free of any obstructing insulation or electrical conduit. Separate the staircase from the box. Present the closed box in the opening. Adjust the level. Use wedges if necessary. Mark the outlines of the box on the internal surfaces (joists or concrete).

Fixing to the hatch opening

Use the assembly instructions to mark the drill holes. Check your dimensions and the level a second time. The fixings must be evenly distributed across all four sides. This is essential to avoid any warping. Drill with the bits appropriate to the material (wood or concrete). Insert the plugs then fix the box frame.

Cutting, adjustment and finishing

Push the staircase back into the box frame. Unfold the staircase to the floor. Cut the feet according to the instructions for safe deployment. Check the correct operation of the locking device (staircase and hatch). When open, the staircase must be stable and rigid. When closed, it must fold back without forcing. The hatch should (ideally) be flush with the ceiling.

Loft ladder: insulation and box dimensions

The box dimensions always correspond to its external dimensions. If the hatch opening is wider or longer than the box dimensions, allow for planks to fill the gap between the hatch opening and the box.
The thickness of the hatch insulation should guide your choice in order to save on heating costs (consider our sandwich-type hatches). The hatch of an insulated box has a thickness of 6 mm to which insulation of 26 to 86 mm is added. Our loft ladders have a closing latch, a bar fitted with a hook designed for opening and closing the hatch.

Improve the comfort of your loft ladder

A loft ladder is a telescopic or folding product. You can improve its comfort of use with accessories. The landing step is fixed to the hatch opening and replaces the last step that is often missing. The loft balustrade prevents falls when you move around on the upper level. The additional handrail, to be fixed on the inner face of the hatch, improves comfort of use.
We also offer inspection hatches without a ladder. These inspection hatches have a hinged opening and closing system. They allow the loft to be well insulated from the rest of the house.

Additional step

All users of loft ladders will tell you. There is a gap between the last step of the staircase and the floor of the upper level. This is due to the thickness of the floor, which is impossible to predict for a staircase manufacturer. For frequent and intensive use, install a landing step. It is fixed to the hatch frame.

Loft balustrade

Better safe than sorry. And an open hatch in a loft or attic presents a significant risk of falling. To avoid any problems, add a loft balustrade. We offer an elegant and sturdy all-wood model at a low price. With its lateral fixing brackets, it makes circulation on the upper level safe.

Inspection hatches and handrail

Improve the thermal insulation of your access with a hatch with a double peripheral seal. We have added a "super insulated" insulator 86 mm thick across the entire hatch. To secure going up and down, install the SAPET handrail. Retractable, to be fixed on the side of the upper part of the staircase, it fits all staircase models.

FAQ - About our loft ladders

The loft ladder replaces the stepladder or the ladder. It provides safety and comfort. Telescopic, folding, in wood or metal, our models adapt to all configurations. Do you have questions? Consult our answers.

What box width for a 95 cm wide hatch opening?

The rule is simple. The box must be 10 to 20 mm narrower than the hatch opening. For a 95 cm hatch opening, choose a 70 cm box. Centre it and fill in 12.5 cm on each side with pieces of wood.

Can an aluminium staircase be cut down?

Yes, on the last section only, within the cutting range indicated in the instructions. Take care to keep the anti-slip pads. Respect the angle of ascent and ensure a good ground contact.

What is the difference in comfort and safety between wood and metal?

If you are looking for a balance between comfort and safety, opt for the aluminium loft ladder. The CABAL model is perfectly suited. Wood is elegant, but best avoided for intensive use. Metal is robust, but susceptible to corrosion.

How do you choose between a folding staircase and a telescopic staircase?

The folding staircase in two, three or four sections requires a little floor space. If this is not the case, opt for the telescopic staircase. The required pull-out distance is less. Measure the available space carefully before purchasing.
