The CHALANCON 86 combines an 86 mm insulated hatch and a wooden folding loft ladder in one unit. When closed, the hatch sits flush with the ceiling; when open, it reveals a ladder with 13 steps measuring 40 cm wide.

With 80 mm of insulation, this is the best-insulated version in the CHALANCON range. It comes in 12 frame sizes, from 113 x 55 to 140 x 70 cm, for ceiling heights up to 280 cm. A handrail is included.

Choosing the right loft ladder

A ceiling hatch is often the main weak point in loft insulation. With its 86 mm hatch, the CHALANCON 86 is suitable above a bedroom or living room, beneath a cold, unconverted loft.

The frame is 170 mm high: check the available space above the ceiling. If you only need an access hatch without a ladder, this model is not suitable; it is designed for regular access to the loft.

Installation advice

Ceiling opening: prepare an opening to fit your chosen frame, allowing approximately 5 mm around the perimeter. Check that there is at least 170 mm of clear height above the ceiling to accommodate the frame.

Fixing: secure the frame to the floor structure (joists and trimmers) with screws suited to the material, following the instructions. Check that the frame is square before fully tightening the screws: a twisted frame will prevent the hatch from closing properly.

Adjustment: unfold the ladder, measure the ceiling height and trim the final section so it rests flat on the floor. Fit the handrail. Finally, join the loft insulation around the frame to prevent thermal bridging.

Care and protection

Once a year, check that the screws are tight, the joints between the ladder sections are sound and the hatch opening mechanism works properly. Lubricate the mechanisms if the hatch becomes difficult to open, and dust the steps.
