COLOMBINO Insulated 86 mm Loft Ladder with Handrail, Metal and Wood

The COLOMBINO 86 loft ladder combines an included handrail with one of the best-insulated hatches in the range: 86 mm thick, including 80 mm of insulation. It provides access to an unheated loft while limiting heat loss through the ceiling.

The ladder combines metal side rails with 13 wooden treads, each 40 cm wide. The first tread is 20 cm high, and the remaining treads are 22 cm apart. The frame comes in 120 x 60 or 120 x 70 cm sizes, for ceiling heights up to 280 cm.

Choosing the right loft ladder

The handrail provides support when climbing and, especially, when descending while carrying a box or stepping backwards down the ladder. It comes as standard with the COLOMBINO.

Choose the 86 mm version when the loft is unconverted or poorly insulated above a heated room. If the hatch opens into an already insulated loft, the COLOMBINO 56 mm version is sufficient and costs less. The 170 mm-high frame requires enough clearance above the ceiling.

Installation advice

Loft opening: prepare an opening to fit the chosen frame, allowing about 5 mm clearance all around. Check that there is at least 170 mm of clearance above the ceiling to accommodate the frame.

Fixing: secure the frame to the floor structure (joists and trimmer joists) using screws suitable for the material, following the instructions. Check that the frame is square before tightening fully: a twisted frame will prevent the hatch from closing properly.

Adjustment: unfold the ladder, measure the ceiling height and trim the final section so it rests flat on the floor. Fit the handrail. Finally, join the loft insulation around the frame to prevent thermal bridges.

Maintenance and protection

Once a year, check that the screws are tight, inspect the joints between the ladder sections and make sure the hatch opening mechanism works properly. Lubricate the mechanisms if the hatch becomes difficult to open, and dust the treads.

The hatch can be painted to match the ceiling. Take care not to block the seal between the hatch and the frame, which keeps it airtight.
