The CHALANCON 26 is an all-wood loft ladder for accessing a loft through a standard opening. Its 40 cm-wide ladder has 12 treads and folds into a wooden frame with an insulated 26 mm hatch.

It comes in 12 frame sizes, from 110 x 55 to 140 x 70 cm, to fit most existing loft openings. It is suitable for ceiling heights up to 280 cm and supports 160 kg.

Choosing the right loft ladder

The CHALANCON 26 is designed for occasional access to a storage loft. Its 26 mm hatch, including 20 mm of insulation, limits draughts but provides little insulation. Above a bedroom or living room, choose the CHALANCON 46 or 86 mm version, with the same choice of frame sizes.

Allow 148 cm of floor space for the unfolded ladder and 166 cm of clearance. If space is limited, a compact model such as the NOZIERES takes up considerably less room.

Installation advice

Loft opening: prepare an opening to fit the chosen frame, allowing about 5 mm clearance all around. Check that there is at least 135 mm of clearance above the ceiling to accommodate the frame.

Fixing: secure the frame to the floor structure (joists and trimmer joists) using screws suitable for the material, following the instructions. Check that the frame is square before tightening fully: a twisted frame will prevent the hatch from closing properly.

Adjustment: unfold the ladder, measure the ceiling height and trim the final section so it rests flat on the floor. Fit the handrail. Finally, join the loft insulation around the frame to prevent thermal bridges.

Maintenance and protection

Once a year, check that the screws are tight, inspect the joints between the ladder sections and make sure the hatch opening mechanism works properly. Lubricate the mechanisms if the hatch becomes difficult to open, and dust the treads.

The hatch can be painted to match the ceiling. Take care not to block the seal between the hatch and the frame, which keeps it airtight.
