The CHALANCON 46 is a wooden folding loft ladder with a 46 mm hatch containing 40 mm of insulation. It provides access to a loft above a heated room while limiting heat loss.

Its 40 cm-wide ladder has 12 wooden steps. It folds into a 170 mm-high frame, available in 12 sizes from 110 x 55 to 140 x 70 cm, for ceiling heights up to 280 cm. A handrail is supplied.

Choosing the right folding loft ladder

The 46 mm hatch offers a good balance for an accessible loft above a living space. For a very cold, unused loft, the CHALANCON 86 mm version has twice as much insulation: 80 mm rather than 40 mm.

The frame is 170 mm high: check the clear height above the ceiling, between the joists. Allow 128 or 142 cm of floor space, depending on the frame.

Installation advice

Ceiling opening: prepare an opening to fit the chosen frame, allowing around 5 mm of clearance all round. Check that there is at least 170 mm of clear height above the ceiling to accommodate the frame.

Fixing: secure the frame to the floor structure (joists and trimming joists) with screws suited to the material, following the instructions. Check that the frame is square before fully tightening the screws: a twisted frame will prevent the hatch from closing properly.

Adjustment: unfold the ladder, measure the ceiling height and trim the bottom section so that it rests flat on the floor. Fit the handrail. Finally, join the loft insulation around the frame to prevent thermal bridges.

Care and protection

Once a year, check that the screws are tight, inspect the joints between ladder sections and check that the hatch-opening mechanism works properly. Lubricate the mechanisms if opening becomes stiff, and dust the steps.

The hatch can be painted to match the ceiling. Take care not to block the seal between the hatch and frame, which keeps it airtight.
