Made-to-Measure Wood and Vertical Aluminium Rail Balustrade – Contemporary Indoor Design
This made-to-measure balustrade combines wooden posts and a wooden handrail (fir, beech or oak) with an infill of vertically arranged aluminium rails. The vertical arrangement gives a more enclosed and safer appearance than horizontal rails – it meets balustrade spacing standards (≤ 11 cm between rails) and provides an effective barrier against children passing through.
This model combines the natural look of wood for its structural components (posts and handrail) with the contemporary, lightweight character of aluminium infill. It suits modern interiors, lofts and mezzanines where a vertical, open appearance is wanted without the horizontal rails found on other models. Configured to your dimensions using the WoodUp configurator, it is supplied as a self-assembly kit with instructions and fixings. For indoor use only.

Installation advice
The vertical aluminium rails must be perfectly parallel and upright – use a spirit level for each rail during positioning. Fix the wooden posts first, then insert the aluminium rails into their supports, starting at the ends, and finish by fitting the handrail. Apply the wood finish before fitting the rails to avoid drips on the aluminium.
Care and protection
Apply stair varnish or hardwax oil to the wooden parts before use. The anodised aluminium rails need no treatment. Clean the entire balustrade annually with soapy water. Check the fixings are tight each year.
WoodUp advice
Before you buy: vertical aluminium rails create a different visual effect from horizontal rails – they make the balustrade look taller and give it a more contemporary appearance. Check that the spacing between vertical rails meets the regulatory maximum of 11 cm (NF P01-012). The wooden posts are supplied unfinished: apply a finish before installation. Measure the span accurately before ordering – made to measure, with an 8-week lead time.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between vertical and horizontal rails?
The vertical rails of the wood balustrade with vertical aluminium rails create a slatted-screen effect – the vertical bars meet the spacing standard of ≤ 11 cm and prevent climbing or passing through. The horizontal rails of the made-to-measure wood balustrade with metal rails create a more open look, but the horizontal bars can provide footholds for climbing – not recommended where there are children. For a family mezzanine, vertical rails are safer.
Is this balustrade suitable for a straight staircase (sloping stair balustrade)?
This model is primarily designed for level landing balustrades. For a sloping balustrade that follows a staircase, fixing the vertical rails to an inclined stringer requires adaptation. Contact WoodUp with details of your staircase configuration (angle of incline and length) to confirm feasibility before ordering.
Can the aluminium rails be coloured black or white instead of natural aluminium?
The rails are generally supplied in natural anodised aluminium. Black or white lacquered finishes may be available depending on the configurator options – check the WoodUp configurator or contact customer service to find out which finishes are available for this model.
Can this balustrade be combined with WoodUp’s Quadrum or Ellipsis ranges?
Not directly – this model uses specific wooden posts, and its aluminium rails have their own dimensions. The Quadrum and Ellipsis ranges Ellipsis aluminium starter kit are separate all-aluminium systems with their own posts and accessories. They are not designed to be combined with this made-to-measure wood-and-aluminium model.
Are the vertical aluminium rails supplied in the same finish as the Quadrum and Ellipsis ranges?
This made-to-measure model uses its own aluminium rails, which differ from those in the Quadrum range (16x16 mm square rails) and the Ellipsis range (Ø16 mm round rails). A natural aluminium finish is generally offered; black or white options may be available through the WoodUp configurator. Contact WoodUp to check which finishes are available for the rails on this specific model.
