Custom Wood Balustrade with Vertical Aluminium Rails - Contemporary Interior Design
This made-to-measure balustrade combines posts and a handrail in solid wood (fir, beech or oak) with an infill of aluminium rails arranged vertically. The vertical arrangement of the aluminium rails produces a more enclosed and more secure result than a horizontal arrangement - it complies with balustrade standards in terms of spacing (≤ 11 cm between rails) and forms an effective barrier against children passing through.
This model combines the natural appearance of wood for the structural elements (posts, handrail) and the contemporary, lightweight character of aluminium for the infill. It is suited to modern interiors, lofts and mezzanines where vertical transparency is desired without the horizontal rails of horizontal baluster models. Configured to your dimensions via the WoodUp configurator, delivered as a self-assembly kit with instructions and fixings. Indoor use only.

Installation advice
The vertical aluminium rails must be perfectly parallel to each other and vertical - use a spirit level for each rail during positioning. Begin by fixing the wooden posts, then insert the aluminium rails into their brackets starting from the ends, and finish by fitting the handrail. Apply the wood finish before installing the rails to avoid any drips on the aluminium.
Maintenance and protection
Apply varnish or oil-wax to the wooden parts before use. Anodised aluminium rails require no treatment. Annual cleaning with soapy water on all parts. Check the tightness of joints annually.
WoodUp advice
What to know before buying: vertical aluminium rails create a different visual effect from horizontal rails — they visually elongate the height of the balustrade and offer a more contemporary look. Check that the spacing between vertical rails complies with the maximum 11 cm regulatory requirement (NF P01-012). Wooden posts are delivered unfinished: apply the finish before installation. Measure the span precisely before ordering — made to measure, 8-week lead time.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between vertical and horizontal rails?
The vertical rails Wooden balustrade with vertical aluminium rails create a louvre effect - the vertical balusters comply with the spacing standard ≤ 11 cm and prevent any climbing or passage. The horizontal rails Custom wooden balustrade with metal rails create a more open effect, but the horizontal balusters can serve as a foothold for climbing - not recommended with children. For a family mezzanine, vertical rails are safer.
Is this balustrade suitable for a straight staircase (raking balustrade)?
This model is primarily designed for landing balustrades at a constant height. For a raking balustrade following the slope of a staircase, fixing vertical rails to an inclined string requires adaptation. Contact WoodUp specifying your staircase configuration (pitch angle, length) to confirm feasibility before ordering.
Can the aluminium rails be coloured (black, white) instead of natural aluminium tone?
The rails are generally delivered in natural anodised aluminium. Black or white lacquered finishes may be available depending on the configurator options - check directly on the WoodUp configurator or contact customer service to find out the available finishes for this model.
Can this balustrade be combined with the WoodUp Quadrum or Ellipsis ranges?
Not directly - this model uses specific wooden posts and its aluminium rails have their own dimensions. The Quadrum range and the Ellipsis range Ellipsis aluminium starter kit are independent systems in pure aluminium with their own posts and accessories. They are not designed to be mixed with this made-to-measure wood-aluminium model.
Are the vertical aluminium rails delivered in the same finish as the Quadrum and Ellipsis ranges?
This made-to-measure model uses specific aluminium rails - different from the Quadrum range (16x16mm square rails) or Ellipsis (round rails Ø16mm). The natural aluminium finish is generally offered; colour options (black, white) may be available depending on the WoodUp configurator. Contact WoodUp to check the available finishes for the rails of this specific model.
