This handrail in moulded solid fir is delivered with its fixing brackets, ready to mount on the wall. The 56x45 mm section provides a stable and comfortable grip, suitable for all user profiles. The moulded profile gives a neat appearance without requiring a complex finish.

Fir is a lightweight wood, easy to work with and to paint or varnish. It is suitable exclusively for indoor use: staircases, corridors, mezzanines. Its moderate density (approximately 450 kg/m³) makes it easy to handle during installation, even solo for shorter lengths.

The kit is available in 4 lengths from 150 to 300 cm. The number of brackets included varies according to the chosen length: 2 brackets for models up to 250 cm, 3 brackets for 300 cm. Wall fixing screws must be sourced separately, depending on the type of support.

Installation advice

Start by marking the bracket positions on the wall using a spirit level. For lengths up to 250 cm, space the 2 brackets approximately 20 cm from each end. For longer lengths, add the additional bracket(s), spacing them evenly — maximum recommended spacing: 80 cm between two supports.

Fix the brackets with screws suited to the wall type (concrete plug, plasterboard screw or wood screw as appropriate). Screws are not supplied. Install the handrail at a height of between 80 and 100 cm measured from the step nosing, in line with standard practice for private staircases. Once the brackets are in place, slot the handrail in and tighten the retaining screws.

As fir is a softwood, avoid overtightening the retaining screws to prevent marking the surface. A moderate torque is sufficient to ensure a secure hold.

Maintenance and protection

Raw fir is delivered without any surface treatment. Before use, apply a suitable interior finish: polyurethane varnish (2 to 3 coats, durability 5 to 7 years), oil-wax (matt appearance, renewal every 2 to 3 years) or interior wood paint. Without a finish, the wood is exposed to dirt and ambient moisture, which can lead to gradual greying.

For routine maintenance, wiping with a slightly damp cloth is sufficient. Avoid abrasive products or acid-based cleaners. If the wood is varnished, light fine sanding followed by a fresh coat of varnish will refresh the surface every 5 to 7 years depending on use.

The length is calculated by measuring the horizontal distance between the bottom and top of the staircase, adding approximately 10 to 20 cm of overhang on each side if space allows. For a staircase of 12 steps with a 25 cm going, allow approximately 300 cm of run. This kit is available up to 300 cm, which covers the vast majority of straight private staircases.

Are the brackets compatible with all wall types?

The supplied brackets can be fixed to any wall type, provided the appropriate screws are used: concrete or block wall plugs, plasterboard screws with plugs, or wood screws directly into a stud. Screws are not included in the kit — allow for M5 or M6 screws depending on the bracket hole diameter and wall type.

Can this fir handrail be painted or varnished?

Yes, raw fir is easy to finish. For painting, first apply a grain-filler primer, then 2 coats of satin interior wood paint. For varnishing, lightly sand with 120-grit paper before the first coat. The wood absorbs finishing products well, ensuring a uniform result with few passes.

Is this handrail suitable for people with reduced mobility?

The 56x45 mm section provides a firm and stable grip, suitable for most users. For people with reduced mobility, install the handrail at 90 cm height from the nosing, and ensure it is continuous along the full length of the staircase. The moulded profile avoids sharp edges, improving the comfort of the hand's glide.

Why choose a fir handrail rather than beech or oak?

Fir is significantly lighter than beech or oak (approximately 450 kg/m³ compared to 720 to 750 kg/m³), which makes installation easier, particularly for longer lengths. It is also more affordable. In return, it is a softwood that marks more easily and requires a protective finish. Beech or oak are preferable for high-traffic staircases or in homes with young children.

Can two lengths be joined to exceed 300 cm?

There is no dedicated connector for this reference. A butt joint remains possible using a bracket positioned at the junction point, but the visual result will be visible. For lengths exceeding 300 cm, it is preferable to contact Woodup for a bespoke solution.
