This moulded solid fir handrail comes with mounting brackets ready to fit to the wall. Its 56 x 45 mm cross-section provides a stable, comfortable grip suitable for all types of user. The moulded profile gives it a neat appearance without requiring a complex finish.

Fir is a light wood that is easy to work, paint and varnish. It is suitable for indoor use only: on staircases, in corridors and on mezzanines. Its moderate density (around 450 kg/m³) makes it manageable during installation, even working alone with shorter lengths.

The kit comes in 4 lengths from 150 to 300 cm. The number of brackets included depends on the length chosen: 2 brackets for models up to 250 cm and 3 for the 300 cm model. Wall fixings must be purchased separately to suit the wall material.

Installation tips

Start by marking the bracket positions on the wall with a spirit level. For lengths up to 250 cm, position the 2 brackets approximately 20 cm from each end. For longer lengths, add the extra bracket or brackets at regular intervals – maximum recommended spacing: 80 cm between supports.

Fix the brackets using fixings suitable for the wall material (concrete wall plugs, plasterboard fixings or wood screws, as appropriate). Fixings are not supplied. Install the handrail 80 to 100 cm high, measured from the stair nosings, in line with common practice for domestic staircases. Once the brackets are fitted, slot the handrail into place and tighten the retaining screws.

Fir is a soft wood, so avoid overtightening the retaining screws to prevent marks on the surface. Moderate tightening is enough to hold it securely.

Care and protection

The unfinished fir is supplied without a surface treatment. Before use, apply a suitable interior finish: polyurethane varnish (2 to 3 coats, lasting 5 to 7 years), hardwax oil (matt appearance, reapply every 2 to 3 years) or interior wood paint. Without a finish, the wood is exposed to dirt and ambient moisture, which can cause gradual greying.

For routine care, simply wipe with a slightly damp cloth. Avoid abrasive products or acidic cleaners. If the wood is varnished, lightly sanding with fine-grit sandpaper and applying a fresh coat of varnish can refresh the surface every 5 to 7 years, depending on use.

Wall fixings are not supplied: choose them to suit the wall material (concrete, brick or plaster). The unfinished fir must be treated before installation; apply oil, a hard-wearing floor varnish or varnish to every face, including cut ends. Indoor use only.

What length of handrail should I choose for my staircase?

To calculate the length, measure the horizontal distance from the bottom to the top of the staircase, adding around 10 to 20 cm of overhang at each end if space allows. For a 12-step staircase with a 25 cm tread depth, allow approximately 300 cm along the slope. This kit is available in lengths up to 300 cm, covering the vast majority of straight domestic staircases.

Are the brackets compatible with all types of wall?

The supplied brackets can be fixed to any wall material, provided you use suitable fixings: wall plugs for concrete or concrete blocks, screws and plasterboard plugs, or wood screws driven directly into a stud. Fixings are not included in the kit – choose M5 or M6 screws according to the diameter of the bracket holes and the wall type.

Can this fir handrail be painted or varnished?

Yes, unfinished fir is easy to finish. For paint, first apply a pore-filling primer, followed by 2 coats of satin interior wood paint. For varnish, lightly sand with 120-grit sandpaper before the first coat. The wood absorbs finishing products well, giving an even result with few coats.

Is this handrail suitable for people with reduced mobility?

The 56 x 45 mm cross-section provides a firm, stable grip suitable for most users. For people with reduced mobility, install the handrail 90 cm above the stair nosings and ensure it runs continuously along the full length of the staircase. The moulded profile has no sharp edges, making it more comfortable to slide your hand along.

Why choose a fir handrail rather than beech or oak?

Fir is considerably lighter than beech or oak (around 450 kg/m³ compared with 720 to 750 kg/m³), making it easier to install, especially in longer lengths. It is also more affordable. However, it is a soft wood that marks more easily and needs a protective finish. Beech or oak is preferable for heavily used staircases or where there are young children.

Can two lengths be joined to extend beyond 300 cm?

There is no dedicated connector for this model. A butt joint is possible using a bracket positioned at the join, but the join will remain visible. For lengths over 300 cm, it is best to contact Woodup to discuss a made-to-measure solution.
