Round handrail in solid glulam beech Ø42 mm, cylindrical profile with continuous and consistent grip. Hard and stable wood (~720 kg/m³), suited to staircases subject to regular daily use. Available in 3 lengths: 200 cm, 250 cm, 295 cm. Supplied raw, to be varnished, oiled or sealed before use. Interior use only. Brackets for round profile Ø42 mm and fixings to be ordered separately. Pre-drilling recommended before screwing into beech to avoid splitting.

Round beech handrail Ø42 mm glued laminated, indoor use

This round handrail in solid glued laminated beech features a cylindrical profile of 42 mm in diameter, allowing a continuous and consistent grip along the entire length. Beech is a hard deciduous wood (density ~720 kg/m³), significantly more resistant to abrasion than softwoods such as fir or pine. It is suitable for staircases with sustained daily use.

The glued laminated construction provides superior dimensional stability compared to solid raw timber: the laminations are glued in alternating directions, which limits movement caused by variations in ambient humidity. On a handrail subject to temperature and humidity fluctuations throughout the seasons, this stability results in a reduced risk of warping or cracking. For indoor use only.

Three lengths are available: 200, 250 and 300 cm. The profile is supplied raw and must be treated before use. Fixing brackets are to be ordered separately - they must be suitable for a round profile of Ø42 mm (collars or cradle brackets, different from groove brackets).

Key points

  • Hardwood (~720 kg/m³): superior abrasion and impact resistance compared to softwoods - stairs for regular daily use
  • Round profile Ø42 mm: continuous cylindrical grip, smooth sliding of the hand along the entire length
  • Glued laminated: better dimensional stability than solid raw timber, less sensitive to variations in ambient humidity
  • Raw wood, ready to finish: can be varnished, oiled or floor-lacquered according to the desired result
  • 3 available lengths: 200, 250 and 300 cm for standard straight staircases

Installation advice

Select brackets suitable for a round profile of Ø42 mm - collars or cradle brackets, different from the groove brackets used for moulded profiles. Position the brackets at regular intervals, with a maximum spacing of 80 cm between two support points. For 200 cm, 3 brackets are sufficient; for 300 cm, allow for 4.

Install the handrail at a height of between 80 and 100 cm from the nosing or finished floor. As beech is a hardwood, always carry out systematic pre-drilling before screwing to avoid splitting. Apply the finish preferably before installation, while the piece is still accessible on all faces.

Maintenance and protection

Raw beech must be treated before use. Recommended finishes according to use:

  • Staircase floor lacquer: 2 to 3 coats, hard film, maximum resistance to friction, durability 5 to 7 years
  • Polyurethane varnish: good resistance, gloss or satin finish, durability 4 to 6 years
  • Interior oil-wax: natural matt finish, renewal every 1 to 2 years

For routine maintenance, a slightly damp cloth is sufficient. Avoid abrasive or acidic products. On a varnished or lacquered surface, light fine sanding followed by a new coat is enough to refresh the protection after several years of use.

WoodUp advice

What to know before buying: the round Ø42 mm profile requires cradle brackets — not compatible with groove brackets. Solid beech is sensitive to moisture: treat all faces before installation, paying particular attention to cut ends. Pre-drilling is mandatory before screwing. Wall fixings not included. Indoor use only.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose beech rather than fir for a round handrail?

Beech (density ~720 kg/m³) is significantly more resistant to abrasion than fir (~450 kg/m³). On a handrail used several times a day, beech marks much less easily over time. It is also more dimensionally stable in glued laminated form. Fir remains suitable for lightly used staircases or budget-constrained projects.

What brackets should I buy for a round Ø42 mm handrail?

Brackets for round profiles come in the form of collars or cradle brackets that grip the wooden cylinder - they differ from the groove brackets used for moulded handrails. Woodup offers handrail brackets for round profiles suited to this diameter, available separately in the accessories section.

What is the lifespan of a glued laminated beech handrail?

Indoors with a correctly applied and renewed floor lacquer or varnish finish, a glued laminated beech handrail can last 20 years and more. The lifespan depends primarily on frequency of use, the quality of the initial finish and the renewal of surface maintenance.

Is pre-drilling necessary before screwing into beech?

Yes, absolutely. Beech is a hardwood - screwing without pre-drilling risks splitting the wood or distorting the screw. Use a drill bit with a diameter slightly smaller than the screw (e.g. a 3.5 mm bit for a 4 mm screw). This precaution is particularly important within 5 cm of the ends.

Can this handrail be used outdoors?

No. Glued laminated beech is designed for indoor use only. Outdoors, humidity cycles and weather conditions rapidly degrade the laminating adhesives, which are not designed for such use. For an outdoor handrail, opt for a suitable species such as douglas fir or a hardwood timber.

What is the difference between a round profile and a moulded profile for a handrail?

The round profile offers continuous, snag-free sliding of the hand along the entire length, often appreciated on staircases with a steep incline. The moulded profile features chamfers that provide a slightly firmer lateral grip. The choice depends primarily on personal preference and the desired aesthetic.
