Moulded fir handrail 50x50 mm — 21x5 mm groove
This handrail in solid moulded fir has a square section of 50x50 mm and a 21x5 mm groove compatible with standard handrail brackets. The moulded profile visually lightens the section while maintaining a stable grip.
Fir is a lightweight softwood, well suited to common interior fittings: straight staircases, corridors, mezzanines. Its moderate density (approximately 450 kg/m³) makes handling easy during installation. Supplied bare, it accepts all types of finish — varnish, paint, oil or wax — to suit the desired décor.
This product is sold without brackets. It is compatible with 21x5 mm groove brackets available separately on Woodup. Three lengths are offered: 200, 250 and 300 cm. For longer staircases, please refer to the available lengths on other products in the range.

Installation advice
Choose brackets compatible with the 21x5 mm groove before purchasing. Fix the wall brackets at regular intervals, with a maximum spacing of 80 cm between two supports. For a corridor or straight staircase, start by fitting the brackets at both ends, stretch a chalk line to align the intermediate ones, then secure everything in place.
Install the handrail at a height of between 80 and 100 cm measured from the finished floor or stair nosing. Engage the groove into the bracket heads and fix with the appropriate screws (not included). If the available length exceeds the desired span, fir can be easily cut with a saw at the end of the run.
Lightly sand the cut ends with 120-grit sandpaper before applying the finish, to prevent the wood from splitting.
Maintenance and protection
Bare fir must be treated before regular use. Choose a finish suited to the application:
- Polyurethane varnish: 2 to 3 coats, maximum resistance to friction, durability 5 to 7 years
- Oil-wax: natural and matt appearance, renewal every 2 to 3 years
- Interior wood paint: after application of a pore-filling primer
For routine maintenance, wipe with a slightly damp cloth. Avoid all abrasive or acidic cleaning products. A light fine sanding followed by a coat of finish is sufficient to refresh the surface after several years of use.
WoodUp tip
What to know before buying: moulded 50x50 mm profile compatible with WoodUp 21x5 mm groove brackets. Bare fir must be treated before installation on all faces, including inside the groove. Wall fixings not included. 1 bracket every 80–100 cm. Indoor use only.
Frequently asked questions
What brackets are compatible with the 21x5 mm groove?
Compatible brackets are wall plates with a 21 mm wide and 5 mm deep lug, available in black lacquered or two-tone steel. These brackets are sold separately on Woodup. Allow one bracket every 60 to 80 cm for a secure fit along the full length.
Can this handrail be cut to an intermediate length?
Yes. Solid fir can be easily cut with a circular saw or jigsaw. Mark the cut precisely, use a fine wood blade, and sand the end grain after cutting to avoid splinters. Cutting does not affect the mechanical properties of the wood.
What is the difference between this product and the 56x45 mm handrail?
The 50x50 mm section is square and slightly narrower in depth. The 56x45 mm is wider but less tall, giving a flatter profile and a slightly larger contact surface with the palm. The choice depends mainly on compatibility with existing brackets and aesthetic preference.
Is this handrail suitable for heavily used staircases?
Fir is a soft wood, prone to marking under heavy use. For a high-traffic staircase (residential building, professional use), it is preferable to opt for a beech or oak handrail, which are significantly more resistant to abrasion. Fir is well suited to private staircases with normal everyday use.
Should a finish be applied before installing the handrail?
It is strongly recommended to apply the finish before installation rather than afterwards. Working on the wood flat ensures even application on all faces, including the groove and the ends. Allow to dry completely before fixing to the brackets.
Why choose fir over a synthetic handrail?
Solid wood offers a naturally warmer feel to the touch than PVC or aluminium, improving comfort of use in winter. It is also easier to paint or customise. Unlike synthetic profiles, it can be repaired or refinished to match after several years of use.
