Moulded ash handrail 50x50 mm
Moulded handrail in solid ash 50x50 mm with 21x5 mm groove. Hardwood with a fine and regular grain (~700 kg/m³), resistant to daily abrasion. Available in 5 lengths: 100 cm, 150 cm, 200 cm, 250 cm, 300 cm — the most complete range in the collection. Supplied raw, to be varnished, oiled, or sealed before use. Interior use only. Wall brackets compatible with the 21x5 mm groove and fixings to be ordered separately. Pre-drilling recommended before screwing into ash.
Moulded ash handrail 50x50 mm — hard wood, fine grain, indoor use
This moulded handrail in solid ash features a square section of 50x50 mm and a groove of 21x5 mm for fixing to standard wall brackets. Ash is a hard hardwood (density ~700 kg/m³), comparable to beech in terms of strength, but with a finer grain and a lighter tone — beige to off-white with slightly golden highlights.
Its wide availability in lengths — from 100 to 300 cm in 5 formats — allows it to cover small landings and half-flights as well as full straight staircases. The moulded profile softens the angles of the square section and improves grip comfort. Ash is reserved for indoor use only: like beech, it warps and deteriorates quickly outdoors without appropriate specific treatment.
Supplied raw, it must be treated before use. Brackets and fixings must be sourced separately, compatible with the 21x5 mm groove.

Key points
- ✓ Hard wood (~700 kg/m³): abrasion resistance comparable to beech, suitable for stairs with regular daily use
- ✓ Fine grain and light tone: bright natural appearance, enhanced by a satin varnish or transparent oil
- ✓ 5 available lengths: from 100 to 300 cm, full coverage of landings, half-flights and straight staircases
- ✓ Standard 21x5 mm groove: compatible with common wall brackets available separately
- ✓ Customisable: raw wood receptive to varnish, oil and varnish finish depending on the desired result
Installation advice
Select brackets compatible with the 21x5 mm groove. Position them at regular intervals, with a maximum spacing of 80 cm between two support points. For short lengths (100 and 150 cm), 2 brackets are sufficient; beyond that, add an intermediate bracket every 60 to 80 cm.
Install the handrail at a height of between 80 and 100 cm from the nosing or finished floor. Ash is a hard wood — carry out pre-drilling before any screwing into the wood to avoid splitting, particularly near the ends. Apply the finish preferably before installation, when the piece is accessible on all its faces.
Maintenance and protection
Raw ash must be treated before any regular use. Recommended finishes according to use:
- Staircase varnish: 2 to 3 coats, maximum friction resistance, durability 5 to 7 years
- Polyurethane varnish: good protection, gloss or satin finish, durability 4 to 6 years
- Interior wood oil-wax: natural matte appearance, renewal every 1 to 2 years
For routine maintenance, a slightly damp cloth is sufficient. Avoid any abrasive or acidic products. The light tone of ash may yellow slightly over time due to light exposure — a natural phenomenon of wood with no impact on its mechanical properties.
WoodUp tip
What to know before buying: ash is a hard and elastic wood. Pre-drilling is mandatory before any screw. Compatible with 21x5 mm groove brackets. Wall fixings not included. Treat all faces before installation (varnish or oil-wax). Indoor use only.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between ash and beech for a handrail?
Ash (density ~700 kg/m³) and beech (~720 kg/m³) are two hardwoods with very similar mechanical performance. Ash has a finer grain and a lighter tone — beige to off-white — while beech is slightly more pinkish. Ash is often preferred in light contemporary interiors where a visually airy wood look is desired.
Can ash be used outdoors?
No. Ash is an exclusively indoor wood. Without specific preservative treatment, it warps and deteriorates quickly outdoors due to moisture. For outdoor use, opt for a Douglas fir handrail (class 3) or an exotic wood handrail.
What finish is recommended to preserve the light tone of ash?
To preserve the natural light appearance of ash, opt for a clear satin varnish or a transparent oil-wax. Avoid yellowing polyurethane-based varnishes — some formulations can slightly amber the wood over time. Water-based varnishes offer a more neutral finish on light species such as ash.
Why choose ash over oak for an indoor handrail?
Oak (~750 kg/m³) is slightly harder and features a more pronounced grain with a warmer, golden tone. Ash is lighter and its finer grain gives it a more understated appearance. The choice depends primarily on the desired aesthetic: oak for a warm and traditional interior, ash for a more contemporary and bright result.
Is this handrail available in a length shorter than 150 cm?
Yes — unlike most other species in the range, this ash reference is available from 100 cm, making it suitable for small landings, half-flights and short-span balustrades.
Is pre-drilling required before screwing into ash?
Yes. Ash is a hard wood — a screw inserted without pre-drilling can cause the wood to split, especially within 5 cm of the ends. Use a drill bit slightly smaller in diameter than the screw (e.g. a 3.5 mm bit for a 4 mm screw). This precaution ensures a clean fixing and avoids damaging the piece.
