Wooden entrance door canopy with curved brackets - Raw fir kit TRUGES

This raw fir wood canopy is designed to shelter a front door, a doorstep or a facade exposed to the elements. The structure rests on two curved brackets in solid wood that support the purlins and rafters, without requiring a ground post. Supplied as a non pre-assembled kit, it is assembled with common tools and fits the majority of masonry or clad facades.

Three lengths are available: 150, 200 and 250 cm. The depth depends on the bracket selected: 100 cm with 60x60 cm brackets, 120 cm with 80x80 cm brackets. The wood is delivered raw, without treatment or finish - to be painted, oiled or stained depending on the exposure and desired colour.

Installation tips

The curved brackets fix directly to the facade, on either side of the door. Before drilling, locate the solid areas of the masonry - avoid hollow joints. Use hammer-in or expansion wall plugs suited to the wall material (concrete, breeze block, brick). Wall plugs are not included: the diameter to choose depends on the final weight of the roofing.

Place the two purlins horizontally on the brackets, then the rafters perpendicularly, evenly spaced. Always pre-drill the fir before screwing to avoid splits, especially at the end of a piece. The whole structure can be assembled by two people in 3 to 5 hours depending on experience.

The roofing - tiles, slates, steel sheet or zinc - is to be fitted after assembly of the framework. Provide a neutral silicone sealant between the wall and the upper purlin to prevent water ingress.

Maintenance and protection

Raw fir is sensitive to moisture outdoors. Before fitting, or at the latest before the first rains, apply suitable protection:

  • âś“ Microporous wood stain: protects without forming a rigid film, allows the wood to breathe - renew every 2 to 3 years
  • âś“ Exterior wood saturator: penetrates deeply, suited to highly exposed areas
  • âś“ Exterior wood paint: opaque finish for chromatic integration with the facade

Lightly sand the wood before application (120 grit) and remove dust. A minimum of two coats for effective protection. Annual cleaning with a stiff brush and clean water is sufficient for routine maintenance.

Frequently asked questions

How do I fix a wooden canopy without a post?

The curved brackets of the TRUGES kit screw directly to the facade, on either side of the door. They carry the entire framework without any ground support. It is essential to fix into solid masonry - never into a joint - using wall plugs suited to the substrate (concrete, breeze block, brick). The plug diameter depends on the weight of the chosen roofing.

What roofing can be fitted on this wooden canopy?

The structure accepts mechanical tiles, natural slates or fibre cement, steel sheet, zinc or polycarbonate depending on the pitch and desired aesthetic. Tiles are not included in the kit. The pitch is determined by the angle of the brackets - check compatibility with the tile type before purchasing (some tiles require a minimum pitch of 30 degrees).

What length canopy should I choose for my front door?

The canopy length must extend beyond the door width by at least 20 cm on each side for effective rain protection. For a standard 90 cm door, a 150 cm length is sufficient. For a double door or porch, opt for 200 or 250 cm. If no standard length suits, consult our made-to-measure model.

Does fir wood hold up well outdoors?

Fir is a naturally class 2 use wood - it is not suitable for outdoor use without treatment. With a wood stain or saturator applied before fitting and renewed every 2 to 3 years, it can last 15 to 20 years under partial shelter. The canopy roofing also protects it from direct rain, which reduces deterioration.

Can this canopy be painted to match the facade colour?

Yes. The wood is delivered raw, without treatment or primer. All finishes are possible: opaque paint, tinted wood stain, natural oil or saturator. Sand with 120 grit before application. For a finish that heavily covers the wood grain, choose a bonding primer before the finishing coat.

Are the wall fixings included in the kit?

The kit assembly screws (purlins, rafters, brackets) are included. Wall fixing plugs are not: their selection depends on the facade material and the weight of the roofing. For solid concrete masonry, 10 mm expansion plugs are generally suitable.
