The double-pitched OCEANE roof fits onto a letterbox to protect it from rain. Its covering is zinc and its frame is unfinished solid fir.

It measures 49 x 40 x 12 cm and fits standard-size letterboxes measuring W. 302 x H. 300 x D. 410 mm. It is simply glued to the top of the letterbox, with no drilling required.

The front gable houses a bird nesting box, complete with an entrance hole and a wooden perch. The roof protects the letterbox while offering shelter to small garden birds. The wooden parts are supplied unfinished and should be protected with an exterior woodstain before installation.

Choosing the right letterbox roof

Measure your letterbox first. The OCEANE roof is designed for a standard letterbox 302 mm wide and 410 mm deep, and needs a flat top for gluing. A letterbox recessed into a low wall, a pillar letterbox or one with a rounded top will not be suitable.

Consider the nesting box too. It is not removable and forms part of the roof: if your letterbox is beside a busy road or very exposed to the sun, birds are less likely to use it.

Installation advice

Before installation: apply an exterior woodstain or wood saturator to the exposed fir surfaces and allow it to dry. Do not treat the inside of the nesting box.

Gluing: clean and degrease the top of the letterbox. Apply an exterior mounting adhesive compatible with the letterbox material, then centre the roof with the gable containing the entrance hole facing forwards. Hold it in place for the drying time specified by the adhesive manufacturer.

When to install: fit the roof in late winter so birds can use the nesting box from spring onwards.

Care and protection

The zinc covering needs no maintenance. Its colour changes to a matt grey without affecting its watertightness.

The fir, however, must remain protected. Reapply woodstain as soon as the wood starts to grey or the finish begins to flake. Do not use any product inside the nesting box, and avoid working on it during the nesting season, from spring to early summer.
