Choosing the right letterbox roof

Bitumen shingles are ideal if you want the look of a house or garden shed roof. Like zinc, they provide protection without the roof covering needing maintenance, but have a more traditional appearance.

With a single slope, all the water runs off on the same side: check that this side does not face a walkway. To direct water to both sides, choose the LIMAGNE dual-slope roof, which also includes a birdhouse. In either case, the letterbox must have a flat top and be standard-sized.

Installation advice

Before installation: apply an exterior wood stain or wood saturator to the visible fir components, taking care not to get any on the shingles.

Gluing: clean and degrease the top of the letterbox. Apply an exterior mounting adhesive compatible with the letterbox material, then centre the roof and hold it in place for the drying time specified by the adhesive manufacturer.

Care and protection

Bitumen shingles do not need treating. Regularly remove leaves and moss that retain moisture, without using a pressure washer, which could strip off the surface granules. Reapply wood stain to the fir as soon as the wood starts to grey or the finish begins to flake.

Frequently asked questions

What is a bitumen shingle roof?

Bitumen shingles are a flexible, bitumen-based roof covering coated with mineral granules. They are waterproof and are also used to roof garden sheds. On the LIMAGNE roof, they cover a fir frame.

How do you attach the LIMAGNE roof to a letterbox?

The roof sits on top of the letterbox and is glued in place, without drilling. Degrease the surface, apply an exterior mounting adhesive suitable for the letterbox material, then hold the roof in place while the adhesive dries.

Which letterboxes are compatible with this roof?

The roof is designed for standard-sized letterboxes measuring W 302 x H 300 x D 410 mm with a flat top. Letterboxes recessed into a low wall or with a curved top are not suitable.

Do the shingles need treating?

No. The shingles are waterproof and do not need treating. Only the untreated fir components need protecting with an exterior wood stain, taking care not to get any on the shingles.

What is the difference between the LIMAGNE single-slope and dual-slope roofs?

Both have bitumen shingles over a fir frame. The single-slope roof directs water to one side. The dual-slope roof directs it to both sides and has a birdhouse built into its gable.
