Solid Wood Potato Storage Unit – Natural Preservation, 10 to 50 kg
This solid wood potato storage unit is designed to keep tubers in optimal conditions: away from light, in a cool and well-ventilated space. Available in 3 capacities — 10, 25 and 50 kg — it is suitable for both a family vegetable garden harvest and large winter supplies. Its bottom-dispensing bin ensures natural rotation of the potatoes: the oldest are taken out first, which limits spoilage.
Unlike storage in a bag or open crate, the wooden storage unit partially filters light and maintains a slight air circulation — two essential conditions to limit premature sprouting. It can be installed in a cellar, garage, pantry or storeroom.

Usage tips
Place the storage unit in a dry, cool (ideally between 6 and 10°C) and slightly ventilated location — an unheated cellar or pantry is ideal. Avoid placing it near a boiler or water heater, which causes harmful temperature fluctuations.
Always fill with unwashed potatoes — residual moisture from washing accelerates rotting. Check the stock every 2 to 3 weeks and immediately remove any damaged or heavily sprouted tuber to avoid contaminating the others. Use the bottom-dispensing bin to prioritise taking out the oldest potatoes first.
Maintenance
At the end of the season, completely empty the storage unit and wipe the inside with a dry cloth. If any dried soil residue remains on the walls, scrape it off dry without wetting the wood. A brief airing for a few days is sufficient to prepare it for the next season. Do not immerse in water or use detergent products.
WoodUp tip
To extend shelf life, place a few sheets of newspaper between layers of potatoes in the larger models (25 and 50 kg) — the paper absorbs excess moisture and slows the spread of mould from one tuber to another. Always remove any green potatoes: they contain solanine and should not be consumed.
Important before buying: untreated solid wood may slightly darken when in contact with damp soil — this is normal and has no effect on storage quality. Choose the 25 kg capacity if you are hesitating between two models: it is the most versatile.
Frequently asked questions
How long can potatoes be stored in this storage unit?
In good conditions (cellar at 6–10°C, partial darkness, dry air), potatoes keep for 3 to 5 months in a wooden storage unit. This is noticeably better than storage in a plastic bag (rapid sprouting) or an open crate (dehydration). Thick-skinned varieties (Bintje, Agria, Charlotte) keep better than early varieties.
Can other vegetables be stored in this unit?
Yes — beetroot, turnips, carrots and black radishes store well in the same conditions. However, do not mix potatoes with onions or apples in the same storage unit: onions accelerate the sprouting of potatoes, and apples release ethylene which damages the tubers.
Which capacity to choose: 10, 25 or 50 kg?
The 10 kg capacity is suitable for 1–2 people with a modest vegetable garden. The 25 kg is the most versatile — suited to a family of 3–4 people and seasonal purchases. The 50 kg is intended for large harvests, large families or bulk purchases directly from a grower.
Can this storage unit be used in a flat?
Yes, if you have an unheated balcony, a pantry or a cool cupboard. In a heated flat above 18°C, storage will be limited to a few weeks — heat greatly accelerates sprouting. For a flat without a cellar, a storage rack or the fridge remain more suitable for small quantities.
How to clean the storage unit between seasons?
Completely empty, scrape off any dry soil residue, wipe with a slightly damp cloth (without soaking the wood) and leave to air dry for 2 to 3 days before filling again. Thoroughly dry wood between uses limits the development of internal mould.
