Installation advice

Before ordering: Measure your floor height (finished floor to finished floor, including floor coverings) accurately to the nearest mm. Check that the ceiling opening meets the minimums: 1300 x 1300 mm (diam. 120) or 1500 x 1500 mm (diam. 140). Consult your plans to confirm the available space and the position of the staircase base.

Determining the number of steps and rise: Your exact floor height determines the optimal number of steps (10, 11 or 12) and the corresponding rise. For example: height 2650 mm = 12 steps of approximately 221 mm. The rise is adjustable in 5 mm increments between 190 and 235 mm, enabling precise adaptation. When ordering, indicate your exact floor height (measured in mm, from finished lower floor to finished upper floor), and the configurator will automatically determine the number of steps and optimal rise.

Site preparation: The floor support must be level and robust (concrete, screed or stable parquet). Clean the area and locate the exact centre of the well opening. Allow for access of at least 2 square metres around the base to receive the components during assembly. Check that the central spindle can be fixed to the ceiling (sufficient anchor required).

On-site assembly: The staircase arrives pre-assembled in separate modules. Assembly mainly consists of: (1) positioning the central spindle vertically (checked with a level), (2) stacking the beech steps onto the spindle, (3) fixing the spindle to the floor and ceiling (2-point support mandatory), (4) installing the balustrade and handrail according to the supplied diagram. Estimated duration: 4–6 hours with two experienced fitters. For non-standard floor heights, check with the manufacturer for available extensions (at additional cost).

Finishing touches: Check that all floor/ceiling fixing screws are tightened after 2–3 days (micro-mechanical settling). Test stability by applying a lateral force to the middle of the handrail (deflection < 5 mm indicates correct tightening).

Maintenance and protection

Lacquered beech — routine maintenance: Lacquered beech steps require no additional treatment. Clean regularly with a microfibre cloth dampened with warm soapy water (neutral pH). Frequency: twice a month for areas of regular use, more often in dusty environments. Avoid standing water and aggressive solvents (alcohol, acetone) which damage the lacquer.

Powder-coated steel — balustrade and spindle: Wipe monthly with a dry cloth. In humid or coastal environments, a slightly damp cloth is sufficient. Check annually that the powder coating has no chips or deep scratches exposing bare steel (sign of possible corrosion). In the event of a scratch, apply a powder-coated steel touch-up lacquer (on quotation).

PVC handrail: Clean with neutral soapy water, no abrasive products. PVC requires no specific maintenance and retains its colour without natural fading (unlike raw wood). Check that the handrail remains firmly fixed at its support points (every 1.5 m).

Lifespan: With regular maintenance, the Berlin staircase retains its functional and aesthetic qualities for a minimum of 15–20 years. The lacquered beech steps may require re-varnishing in the final third of this period if the lacquer shows visible areas of wear. This work is a matter of specialist restoration and does not compromise structural safety.
