Balustrade accessories

Definition: what is a balustrade accessory?

A balustrade accessory is simply a complement to the balustrade itself, ensuring it is properly fixed to the wall or anchored to the floor. All parts of a balustrade must be firmly connected to the floor and to each other. The role of a balustrade is first and foremost to ensure the safety of people and provide protection against falls. Of course, there is an aesthetic choice to be made, but whatever your preferences in terms of materials and finish, it is important to take the time to choose the right accessories. If you need help, our customer service team is here to help you choose the right references!

The characteristics of our balustrade accessories

Our balustrade accessories are specially designed for kit balustrades and individual elements that allow you to design a bespoke balustrade. All our products can therefore be installed to the highest standards without needing to search for compatible accessories elsewhere. Woodup is a joinery workshop based in France, near Clermont-Ferrand. We are fully aware of French safety standards regarding balusters and balustrade fixings, whatever the material: stainless steel cable, aluminium tube of any diameter, wooden post, etc. You will appreciate the thickness of our connectors and various balustrade end caps, designed to last.

Our different balustrade accessories

All elements of a balustrade must be firmly fixed to one another. This applies equally to the handrail, the tubes (or rails) and the posts. It is important to differentiate between accessories for a wooden balustrade and accessories for a metal balustrade. Depending on the type of support (wood, concrete, brick, plasterboard or other), make sure to choose the appropriate screws.

Fixings for interior posts

Fixings for interior balustrades are generally standard; only the screws need to be planned in addition depending on the nature of the floor. The fixing plates of our galvanised steel or aluminium balustrades are pre-drilled. Our wooden posts are to be fixed with accessories chosen according to the configuration of your installation and the materials that will support the load.

Fixings for exterior posts

Fixings for exterior balustrades are particularly robust, and they must be installed on supports without defects. Handrail and tube connectors are the same, except that care must be taken to ensure the material chosen is suitable for outdoor use (corrosion-resistant).

Handrail fixings to a post

If you opt for the configuration of a wooden staircase or balustrade, whether or not combined with metal rails, you will need to plan fixings from the handrail end to each post. A handrail must be able to support the weight of a user. Other types of handrail fixing will be required if you also wish to install a wall-mounted handrail (which is recommended for staircases of a certain width).

Handrail connectors

You may find the right length of handrail for your installation in a single tube or a single section of wood. In our online shop you will find handrails from 2 to 3 metres, in a designer or traditional style of your choice. If you need more length, plan to connect the ends of each handrail section with a suitable handrail connector.

Articulated balustrade connectors

Adjustable connectors for balustrades allow you to configure the balustrade for turning staircases or terrace corners. The advantage of an adjustable balustrade connector is that it can adapt to the angle of your choice. You can adjust it to more or less than 90°, for greater precision and ease of assembly.

Finishing rosettes

The start of a wall-mounted handrail can be finished with a decorative rosette, also known as a wall return end cap. This end piece, purely aesthetic, allows any cut to be concealed and adds a finishing touch to your balustrade.

How to choose your balustrade accessories?

Not all balustrade accessories available in our shop may be necessary for your installation! Not only is there a specific type of connector for each type of wooden or metal rail, but the choice of balustrade accessories also simply depends on the configuration of the location and the nature of the supports.

Materials

A wooden handrail is not fixed in the same way as metal tubes. A wooden post is not anchored to the floor like an aluminium post. And both are fixed differently depending on the nature of the support: concrete terrace, wooden floor, brick wall or other. Do not hesitate to ask our specialists for advice to help you configure your installation safely.

Diameter

If you opt to purchase a balustrade with metal tubes and rails, make sure to order balustrade accessories of the same diameter. We offer several diameters of rails and balusters, to be chosen according to the desired effect and aesthetic.

The type of fixing: surface-mounted or floor-mounted

There are two types of fixings for a balustrade: the so-called surface-mounted fixing (or wall-mounted fixing) and the floor-mounted fixing. Both options offer the same level of robustness if the fixing is correctly carried out, with the right screws.

Colour

Match the colour of your balustrade accessories to that of your balustrade. Our wooden balustrades are available raw or varnished. Their shade varies depending on the raw wood species chosen: oak, ash, beech, fir or exotic wood. Your metal balustrade can come in several colours: gloss black, stainless steel or white.

Safety standards for fixing a balustrade

Whether you opt for a surface-mounted or floor-mounted fixing, the safety standards for installing a balustrade are the same. The handrail must be situated 1 m from the floor. The spacing between vertical posts must be a maximum of 11 cm. And the spacing between horizontal rails must be a maximum of 18 cm. These standards apply equally to wooden balustrades, aluminium balustrades and stainless steel balustrades.
