Round ash handrail Ø42 mm — cylindrical profile, hard wood, interior use
This round handrail in solid ash Ø42 mm features a cylindrical profile for fixing to standard wall brackets. Ash is a hard hardwood (density ~700 kg/m³), with fine grain and a naturally light colour — beige to off-white with slightly golden highlights. These characteristics make it a popular choice for contemporary interiors where a bright wood appearance is desired.
The cylindrical profile of 42 mm in diameter ensures a continuous and even grip along the entire length, without any angle or relief that could catch the palm. This quality is particularly appreciated on steep staircases where the hand slides along the full length of the handrail. Use restricted to interior only — without specific preservative treatment, ash warps and deteriorates rapidly in damp outdoor conditions.
Four lengths are available: 150, 200, 250 and 295 cm. Supplied raw, it must be treated before use. Brackets and fixings are to be ordered separately, compatible with the 21x5 mm groove.

Key points
- ? Hard wood (~700 kg/m³): abrasion resistance close to beech, suited to staircases with regular daily use
- ? Round profile Ø42 mm: continuous cylindrical grip, smooth sliding of the hand along the entire length
- ? Light colour and fine grain: bright natural appearance, suited to contemporary interiors
- ? 4 available lengths: from 150 to 295 cm for standard straight staircases
Installation tips
Select brackets compatible with the 21x5 mm groove. Position them at regular intervals, with a maximum spacing of 80 cm between two support points. Install the handrail at a height between 80 and 100 cm from the stair nosing or finished floor.
Ash is a hard wood — carry out systematic pre-drilling before any screwing to avoid splitting, particularly within 5 cm of the ends. Apply the finish preferably before installation, while the piece is still accessible on all sides — including the groove and cut ends.
Maintenance and protection
Raw ash must be treated before use. Recommended finishes depending on the desired result:
- Water-based staircase floor finish: 2 to 3 coats, neutral result on light wood, abrasion resistance, durability 5 to 7 years
- Clear polyurethane varnish: good protection, gloss or satin finish, durability 4 to 6 years
- Interior wood oil-wax: natural matt appearance, maintenance every 1 to 2 years
For routine maintenance, a slightly damp cloth is sufficient. Avoid any abrasive or acidic products. The light colour of ash may slightly yellow over time due to light exposure — a natural phenomenon with no impact on the mechanical properties of the wood.
WoodUp Tip
What to know before buying: round profile Ø42 mm — cradle brackets required, not compatible with groove brackets. Hard ash: pre-drilling mandatory. Wall fixings not included. Treat before installation. Interior use only.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the round ash handrail and the moulded 50x50 mm version?
The round Ø42 mm profile allows continuous sliding of the hand without any angle or catch — appreciated on steep staircases. The moulded 50x50 mm profile offers a slightly firmer lateral grip and a more traditional appearance. Both use the same 21x5 mm groove and are compatible with the same brackets. The choice depends on the desired grip comfort and preferred aesthetic.
Is ash suitable for outdoor use?
No. Ash is exclusively an indoor wood. Without treatment suitable for outdoor use, it warps, cracks and deteriorates rapidly due to moisture — even under a shelter. For an exterior balustrade, opt for a douglas fir handrail (class 3) or exotic wood.
Which brackets should I choose for a round handrail with a 21x5 mm groove?
The 21x5 mm groove brackets come in the form of standard lug wall plates. They differ from the collars or stirrups used for round profiles without a groove. Woodup offers compatible brackets available separately. Allow one bracket every 60 to 80 cm for secure fixing.
Why choose ash over beech for an interior handrail?
Ash and beech are mechanically very similar. The difference is primarily aesthetic: ash is lighter, with a finer grain and a more contemporary appearance. Beech has slightly more pinkish tones and a more uniform grain. For an interior with light or neutral tones, ash often integrates better. For a warm wood staircase, beech or oak will be more fitting.
Can this handrail be cut to a specific length?
Yes. Ash cuts cleanly with a circular saw or mitre saw. Use a fine-tooth blade to avoid chipping on visible faces. Sand the cut edge with 120-grit sandpaper, then immediately apply a coat of finish to the cut to protect the bare wood.
Is this handrail suitable for people with reduced mobility?
The Ø42 mm diameter provides a firm and continuous grip, suitable for the majority of users. For people with reduced mobility, install the handrail at 90 cm in height from the nosing and ensure continuity along the entire length of the balustrade. The round profile facilitates sliding of the hand, which improves comfort on steep staircases.
