Moulded beech handrail 50x50 mm — laminated, indoor use

This handrail in solid laminated beech features a moulded section of 50x50 mm and a 21x5 mm groove for fixing to standard wall brackets. Beech is a hard deciduous wood (density ~720 kg/m³), significantly more resistant to abrasion than fir or pine. It is suitable for staircases in regular daily use.

Laminated wood offers better dimensional stability than raw sawn solid wood: the laminations are glued in opposite directions, which limits wood movement caused by ambient humidity variations. This stability is particularly valuable for a handrail, which is subject to temperature and humidity changes throughout the seasons. Use restricted to indoor use only — untreated laminated beech warps quickly outdoors.

Three lengths are available: 200, 250 and 300 cm. The profile is supplied raw, to be treated before use. A surface finish is essential to protect the wood and facilitate daily maintenance. Wall brackets and fixings are to be sourced separately, compatible with the 21x5 mm groove.

Installation advice

Select brackets compatible with the 21x5 mm groove before purchasing. Position the brackets at regular intervals, with a maximum spacing of 80 cm between two support points. Install the handrail at a height of between 80 and 100 cm from the nosing or finished floor level.

Beech is a hardwood that requires systematic pre-drilling before screwing to prevent splitting. Use a drill bit with a diameter slightly smaller than the screw. Tighten without applying excessive torque: hardwood holds screws well without needing high torque. Apply the finish preferably before installation, while the piece is still accessible on all its faces.

Maintenance and protection

The raw laminated beech supplied must be treated before any use. Recommended finish according to use:

Staircase lacquer: 2 to 3 coats, maximum resistance to intensive friction, durability 5 to 7 years
Polyurethane varnish: good resistance, gloss or satin finish, durability 4 to 6 years
Interior wood oil-wax: natural matt finish, maintenance every 1 to 2 years

For routine maintenance, a slightly damp cloth is sufficient. Avoid any abrasive or acidic household products. On a varnished or lacquered finish, light fine sanding followed by a fresh coat will refresh the surface after several years of intensive use.

Why choose beech rather than fir for a staircase handrail?

Beech (density ~720 kg/m³) is significantly more resistant to daily abrasion than fir (~450 kg/m³). For a staircase used several times a day, beech marks far less easily. It is also more dimensionally stable in laminated form. In return, it is heavier and requires pre-drilling before screwing. Fir remains appropriate for lightly used staircases or budget-conscious projects.

What is laminated beech and what are its advantages?

Laminated wood is made by gluing beech laminations in alternating directions. This construction limits wood movement caused by ambient temperature and humidity variations, a common phenomenon with raw sawn solid wood. Yes, but as beech is a hardwood, use a circular saw blade with a fine tooth count (at least 40 teeth). Pre-mark the cut with a square to ensure a right angle. After cutting, sand the cut end with 120-grit paper before applying the finish to the cut — bare wood absorbs ambient moisture quickly if left unprotected.
