Round exotic wood handrail Ø42 mm – dense exotic wood, indoor and sheltered outdoor use

This round handrail in solid exotic wood (Entandrophragma utile) features a cylindrical profile with a 42 mm diameter, offering a continuous and regular grip along its entire length. Exotic wood is a dense African tropical wood (~640 kg/m³) with a characteristic pinkish-brown hue. Its natural resistance to fungi and wood-boring insects makes it suitable for both indoor and sheltered outdoor use without any specific preservative treatment.

Compared to European hardwoods such as beech or oak, exotic wood offers naturally superior durability in damp conditions. Its fine grain and regular surface after machining facilitate the application of a homogeneous finish. For outdoor use directly exposed to rain, an exotic wood oil or UV saturator is recommended to limit greying and prevent surface cracking.

Four lengths are available: 150, 195, 250 and 280 cm. Supplied raw, it can be cut to the desired length. Fixing brackets are to be ordered separately. For outdoor use, stainless steel fixings are recommended.

Key features

  • Dense exotic wood (~640 kg/m³): natural durability superior to softwoods and European hardwoods for outdoor use
  • Dual use: interior staircases, covered terrace handrails, gallery or pergola balustrades
  • Round profile Ø42 mm: continuous cylindrical grip, smooth glide along the entire length
  • Pinkish-brown hue: fine and regular grain, homogeneous surface enhanced by a clear oil
  • Cuttable: adjustable to the exact desired length on site

Installation advice

Select brackets suitable for a round profile of Ø42 mm. Position them at regular intervals, with a maximum spacing of 80 cm between two support points. Install the handrail at a height of between 80 and 100 cm from the nosing or finished floor level.

For outdoor use, use minimum A2 stainless steel fixings for brackets and all fastenings – the acidic tannins in exotic wood accelerate corrosion of ordinary screws. Pre-drilling is recommended before screwing into this dense wood. Apply the finish before installation if possible, covering the cut ends as a priority.

Maintenance and protection

For sheltered outdoor use, periodic protection is recommended to maintain the wood's hue and prevent greying. Options for exotic wood:

  • Exotic wood oil: penetrates the fibres, nourishes the wood, preserves the pinkish-brown hue, renewal every 1 to 2 years
  • Exotic wood saturator: enhanced protection against moisture and UV rays, durability 2 to 3 years
  • Exterior woodstain: protective film, durability 2 to 4 years depending on exposure

Without a finish, exotic wood gradually greys outdoors – an aesthetic phenomenon with no impact on its mechanical properties. Indoors, a simple damp wipe is sufficient for routine maintenance.

WoodUp tip

What to know before purchasing: the round Ø42 mm profile requires cradle brackets. Exotic woods are hard: pre-drilling is recommended, stainless steel fixings advised. Wall fixings not included. Exotic wood oil recommended before installation. Depending on the species, sheltered outdoor use is possible.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose exotic wood for an outdoor handrail rather than beech or ash?

Beech and ash are exclusive indoor hardwoods – they deteriorate quickly outdoors without specific preservative treatment. Exotic wood benefits from natural resistance to fungi and insects, making it suitable for sheltered outdoor use without chemical preservation. For any handrail or balustrade in contact with outdoor elements, exotic wood is the appropriate choice among the solid wood range.

What is the difference between the round exotic wood handrail and the moulded version?

Both are in solid exotic wood with the same available lengths. The round Ø42 mm version offers a continuous cylindrical grip, with no angles or relief. The moulded 50x50 mm version has a square section with softened edges and a 21x5 mm groove – its grip is slightly different and its profile integrates better in interiors with straight lines. The choice depends on grip comfort and the desired aesthetic.

What brackets should be used for a round exotic wood handrail?

Brackets must be suitable for a round profile of Ø42 mm – collar clamps or cradle brackets, different from grooved brackets. For outdoor use, choose stainless steel or hot-dip galvanised steel brackets. Lacquered steel brackets are for indoor use only. Plan for one bracket every 60 to 80 cm for a stable fixing.

Does exotic wood grey outdoors?

Yes, like all natural woods, exotic wood gradually greys without a finish outdoors – generally within 6 to 12 months depending on exposure. This greying is purely aesthetic and does not affect the strength of the wood. To preserve the original pinkish-brown hue, apply an exotic wood oil or UV saturator, to be renewed every 1 to 2 years.

Is this handrail PEFC or FSC certified?

Exotic wood may be PEFC or FSC certified depending on the batch origin. To verify the certification of this specific product, contact Woodup directly. Purchasing certified tropical timber guarantees responsible forest management and traceability of the species from its forest of origin.

Can this handrail be cut to a specific length?

Yes. Exotic wood can be cut with a circular saw using a fine-tooth blade. Sand the cut end with 120-grit sandpaper, then immediately apply a coat of oil or saturator to the ends – these are the areas most exposed to moisture and must be treated as a priority, even for indoor use.
