Bespoke Turned Baluster Wood Balustrade – Traditional Classic Interior Style

This bespoke turned baluster balustrade is made entirely from solid wood — turned newel posts, turned balusters and moulded handrail in the same species: fir, pine or beech. The turned profile with its characteristic swellings and grooves gives this balustrade a traditional classic style, typical of Haussmann-era interiors, country houses or chalets with refined décor. It is the most visually elaborate bespoke balustrade in the WoodUp range.

It is configured to your exact dimensions via the WoodUp configurator and delivered as a pre-cut self-assembly kit, with instructions and screws included. The spacing between balusters complies with standard NF P01-012 (≤ 11cm). Indoor use only — fir, pine and beech are not suitable for permanent outdoor exposure. The manufacturing lead time is to be confirmed as this product is made to order.

Installation advice

Turned profiles are more delicate to assemble than straight sections — pre-drilling is essential to avoid splitting the wood in the turned grooves. Apply the finish before assembly without exception: once the balusters are in place, it is very difficult to properly finish the grooves of the turned profile. Two coats of oil-wax or varnish applied with a fine brush before assembly ensure uniform protection.

Maintenance and protection

Turned profiles accumulate dust in their grooves — an annual clean with a soft brush is sufficient. Use varnish for heavily used staircases, oil-wax for less frequently used mezzanines. Apply a light coat of varnish every 5 to 7 years. For a white lacquered finish, choose beech: its fine, homogeneous grain gives the best results with a gloss polyurethane lacquer.

Frequently asked questions

Is this turned baluster balustrade suitable for a contemporary interior?

Yes, under certain conditions. A turned balustrade painted white or in matt lacquer fits into a contemporary interior as a statement feature — the "classic woodwork in a pared-back space" effect is very popular. For a resolutely minimalist interior without ornamentation, straight spindle models Bespoke wood spindle balustrade or metal rail models will integrate more naturally.

Which wood species do you recommend for a white-painted staircase?

Beech is the ideal species for a white-painted finish: very fine grain with no knots, a homogeneous surface that absorbs undercoat and paint evenly. Pine and fir can be suitable but their knots and more open grain may show through a light coat of paint — plan for an opaque alkyd undercoat first.

Can a turned baluster balustrade be ordered in oak?

This model is available in fir, pine or beech via the configurator. Oak is available on certain other models in the WoodUp bespoke range — check the available options directly on the configurator or contact customer service for a specific order in oak.

How do I estimate the delivery lead time for this bespoke product?

WoodUp bespoke products are made to order. The standard lead time is generally 6 to 8 weeks depending on production capacity. For projects with deadline constraints (imminent handover, planned building work), contact WoodUp directly to confirm the lead time before ordering.

Does this bespoke balustrade include floor fixing plates?

Assembly screws and instructions are included. Floor fixing plates are generally included for newel posts on bespoke models — to be confirmed when configuring the order. Floor fixing hardware for concrete (expansion anchors) may not be supplied depending on the substrate.
