Custom Turned-Baluster Wood Balustrade - Classic Traditional Interior Style
This custom turned-baluster balustrade is made entirely from solid wood - turned posts, turned balusters and moulded handrail in the same species: fir, pine or beech. The turned profile with its characteristic swellings and grooves gives this balustrade a classic traditional style, typical of Haussmann-style interiors, country houses or chalets with refined décor. It is the most visually elaborate custom balustrade in the WoodUp range.
It is configured to your exact dimensions via the WoodUp configurator and delivered as a pre-cut kit to assemble, with instructions and fixings included. The spacing between balusters complies with standard NF P01-012 (≤ 11 cm). Indoor use only - fir, pine and beech are not suitable for permanent outdoor exposure. This product is made to order to your measurements. Manufacturing lead time: 8 to 10 weeks.

Installation advice
Turned profiles are more delicate to assemble than straight sections - pre-drilling is essential to avoid splitting the wood in the turning recesses. Apply the finish before assembly without fail: once the balusters are in place, it is very difficult to finish the recesses of the turned profile properly. Two coats of oil-wax or varnish applied with a fine brush before assembly ensure uniform protection.
Maintenance and protection
Turned profiles accumulate dust in their grooves - an annual clean with a soft brush is sufficient. Varnish for heavily used staircases, oil-wax for less frequently used mezzanines. Apply a light additional coat of varnish every 5 to 7 years. For a white lacquered finish, choose beech: its fine, uniform grain gives the best results with a gloss polyurethane lacquer.
WoodUp tip
Important before purchasing: the turned balusters are machined to order according to your dimensions — measure the span and desired height precisely before ordering. The classic turned style pairs well with traditional wooden staircases; for a contemporary staircase, opt for the straight spindle model (ID 566). The spacing between balusters must not exceed 11cm (NF P01-012). The wood is delivered bare: apply a finish before installation to protect the recesses of the turned profile. Lead time: 8 weeks.
Frequently asked questions
Is this turned-baluster balustrade suitable for outdoor use?
No, this model is designed exclusively for interior use. Fir, pine and beech are naturally class 2 wood species: they can tolerate occasional moisture but do not withstand permanent outdoor exposure. For a wooden balustrade on a terrace or balcony, opt for class 3 or 4 species (treated douglas fir, pressure-treated pine) or the WoodUp anodised aluminium range, which is suitable for both interior and exterior use.
What is the difference between a balustrade, a guardrail and a turned-baluster balustrade?
All three terms refer to the same safety fitting in common usage. "Garde-corps" is the regulatory technical term (standard NF P01-012). "Balustrade" refers more specifically to a balustrade with repeated vertical elements - balusters or spindles. "Rambarde" is the vernacular term often used for staircase or landing balustrades. This WoodUp model is technically a turned-baluster balustrade, complying with the minimum height requirement of 1m for interior landings.
What is the price of a custom turned-baluster balustrade?
The price depends directly on the length ordered, the wood species chosen and the number of posts. Beech is the most expensive of the three available species; fir is the least expensive. For an accurate quote, configure your exact length on the WoodUp configurator: the price is calculated automatically with no commitment. As a guide, budget more than a standard kit balustrade, justified by the made-to-order manufacturing to your exact measurements and the artisan turning of the balusters.
Why order this balustrade from WoodUp rather than a DIY superstore?
DIY superstores (Leroy Merlin, Lapeyre) offer balustrades in standard lengths - generally 1m or 2m - to be assembled together. This WoodUp model is manufactured to the exact length of your space, with no cutting or adaptation required. The turning of the balusters is carried out in the workshop: the profile is identical throughout the entire balustrade, with no visible joints. This is particularly relevant for staircases with a curved starting step or landings with atypical dimensions.
How do I estimate the delivery lead time for this custom-made product?
This balustrade is made to order to your measurements. The manufacturing lead time is 8 to 10 weeks. For any project with a specific deadline, contact WoodUp before ordering.
