Round fir handrail Ø50 mm — sold individually, without brackets

This round handrail in solid fir Ø50 mm is sold without plates or screws, for installations where brackets are already in place or chosen separately. The 21x5 mm groove is compatible with standard brackets for grooved handrails. The cylindrical profile provides a regular and continuous grip.

Fir is a light softwood (approximately 450 kg/m³), easy to cut and finish. It is exclusively suited to interior use: outdoors, even under shelter, humidity-dryness cycles cause swelling and cracking without specific suitable protection. Supplied raw, it can be painted, varnished or oiled to match the desired décor.

This reference is available in several lengths ranging from 100 to 300 cm, making it suitable for small staircases as well as corridors and landings. It can be cut to the exact desired length using a circular saw or mitre saw.

Installation advice

First check that your brackets are compatible with the 21x5 mm groove. Position brackets at regular intervals, with a maximum spacing of 80 cm between two support points. For lengths under 150 cm, 2 brackets are sufficient, positioned 15–20 cm from each end.

Install the handrail at a height between 80 and 100 cm from the stair nosing or finished floor level. If cutting is required, mark the cut precisely with a square, saw with a fine wood blade, then sand the edge with 120 grit before applying the finish.

Apply the chosen finish preferably before installation to cover all faces, including the groove and cut ends.

Care and protection

Raw fir must be treated before regular use. Choose the finish according to use and the desired result:

  • Polyurethane varnish: 2 to 3 coats, high resistance to abrasion, durability 5 to 7 years
  • Interior wood oil-wax: natural matt appearance, renewal every 2 to 3 years
  • Interior wood paint: after grain-filler primer, for a coloured finish

For routine maintenance, wiping with a slightly damp cloth is sufficient. Avoid abrasive or acidic cleaners. A heavily worn area can be refreshed locally by light fine sanding followed by a fresh coat of finish.

WoodUp tip

What to know before buying: this handrail is sold without brackets — order separately cradle-type brackets suited to the Ø50 mm round profile (not compatible with groove-type brackets). Allow 1 bracket every 80–100 cm, with a bracket within 30 cm of each end. Wall fixing screws not included. Raw fir must be treated before installation. Interior use only.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference from the Ø50 mm reference supplied with brackets?

This reference is sold on its own, without brackets or screws. It is suitable for those who already have brackets installed or who wish to choose their own fixing finish. The reference with included brackets comes with 2 to 3 adjustable bichromate plates depending on the length, but only offers 4 lengths (150 to 300 cm) compared to 5 here (100 to 300 cm).

Which brackets should I buy for this Ø50 mm handrail?

Compatible brackets are standard groove wall plates with a groove 21 mm wide and 5 mm deep. Woodup offers brackets in black lacquered steel and bichrome finish, available separately. Allow one bracket every 60 to 80 cm for secure fixing along the entire length.

Can this handrail be used outdoors?

No. Fir is a wood for interior use. Outdoors, even under a canopy, moisture variations cause swelling, cracking and accelerated deterioration. For outdoor use, opt for a douglas fir handrail (class 3, interior and sheltered exterior) or exotic hardwood (class 4).

How do I calculate how many brackets I need?

Allow one bracket every 60 to 80 cm. For a length of 200 cm, allow 3 brackets (one at each end + one in the centre). For 300 cm, 4 brackets spaced at 75 cm intervals guarantee stable fixing without visible sagging.

Can this handrail be cut to an intermediate length?

Yes. Fir can be cut easily with a circular saw or mitre saw. Mark the cut with a square, saw with a fine wood blade, then sand the edge with 120 grit. The cut affects neither the strength nor the compatibility with brackets.

Why choose a round handrail rather than a moulded one?

The round profile allows a continuous hand slide along the full length, with no angle or relief that could catch the palm. It is often recommended for frequently used staircases or for elderly users. The moulded profile (square or rectangular with chamfers) is more common in traditional interiors and provides a firmer lateral grip.
